The only thing I could think of to rhyme with 'six' for a catchy thread title was 'ketostix'. But as I don't advocate those, I was stuck!

By now, hopefully you're in the sway of things. Weight loss each week may be less spectacular, but should be reasonably consistent if you stick to the knitting Smile

You may also be finding that it's not happening for you consistently. It is an odd thing - and I have no idea if it's unique to low carbing - but it's not uncommon to go for a couple of weeks without losing, and then for the scales to suddenly drop. However, don't be downhearted and whatever you do, don't use this as an excuse to drop off the wagon!

It's also a very good reason why you should take your measurements as well as weighing, and a very good idea to keep a food/drink/snack diary, so make sure that you're not allowing carb creep.

So. Keep on keeping on. Remember the water, and don't forget to make sure you're keeping the fat levels up.

Here's to next week!

Morning all weigh in was better than expected, actually lost 1lb, so now weighing 9st 4lbs Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 21/05/2012 08:02

knitting??

incidentally i knit like the devil and it does help me avoid snacking (though haven't been so good at that recently...) finished a lovely shawl last week

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 08:27

We were away at the PILs this weekend, and I was much better than normal - thankfully I was in charge of the cooking on Saturday, so we had steak, salad and asparagus. And I bought eggs so that I could have boiled eggs for breakfast yesterday. Then lunch - we went out en famille - was at a carvery.

My heart sank at the choices for starters, but in the end it turned out OK - mushroom soup that was beautiful - and made with proper stock and lots of mushrooms, rather than the 'Campbells Cream of' that I was expecting. I'm fairly sure that there wasn't any flour in it either - just mushrooms and, possibly, a bit of cream.

I had a small amount of gravy and a small spoon of cauliflower/broccoli cheese, but the rest was all good low carb - roast pork, mashed swede, red cabbage.

Unfortunately, there was rather a lot of wine Blush which no doubt explains why I'm still in the 10s rather than the 9s.

Bootcamp for me this week.

OK week 6. Really getting into the swing of this now but recognise that I have been a bit lax in keeping an eye on the carbs. Especially when it comes to making lovely recipes.

I know I have to try and keep around 25g or the weight doesn't really come off. It is a balance between eating correctly to allow weight loss and making the plan easy enough to live with day in day out.

However my nails, hair and skin are really starting to improve. My thighs are not my greatest feature, but the skin around that area is lovely and smooth and plump. Instead of the scaly chicken skin I am normally blessed with.

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 08:37

Great, though, that you have learnt how many carbs you can/can't tolerate.

OP posts:
LittleFrieda · 21/05/2012 08:54

I too went to a carvery on Sunday at a posh hotel beside the sea. Smoked salmon and prawns to start, roast beef, horesradish, bacon with pancetta, mashed swede and broc (and some gravy). Pudding was just a no (shame). And we were good and had water. Nobody even noticed that we weren't eating potatoes, bread, yorkshire puds etc.

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 08:57

Well done [impressed emoticon] on all fronts!

smokinaces · 21/05/2012 09:07

Week six. How many of us still onboard?? Do you get an honorary mn knighthood for this biwi??

And at some point we need to organise some kind of bootcamp lunch......

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 09:08

Ooh - yes! A low carb one, natch.

OP posts:
MmeLindor. · 21/05/2012 09:29

Logging in.

We bought Arbroath Smokies fresh from the fisherman yesterday and I had them for breakfast with scrambled eggs. If you don't know what they are, then you are missing a real treat - Smoked haddock - absolutely delish. I think that Sainsburys stock them, but not sure if only in Scotland.

B: Scrambled eggs with smokies and spinach
L: broccoli cream soup
D: Cold chicken and cucumber with creme fraiche dip

Not sure about the creme fraice dip though - I had it yesterday with salmon and seemed to be ok.

smokinaces · 21/05/2012 09:43

Definitely a low carb one. Would be fab for loads of us to be all slinky thanks to bootcamp :-)

My pork belly is roasting. Four slices, two for lunch and two for dinner. Going to have them with salad and mayo.

Tomorrow is going to be chicken with roasted skin. I think I have been using too lean a meats so going to try a bit fattier for a wee while.

Also, ahem, a bit, ahem, slow moving. So got a coffee which usually helps. If not might need to resort to something stronger tonight.

Jacaqueen · 21/05/2012 09:45

I am all caught up on the chat thread now as real life got in the way this weekend.

I have 6 weeks until the children stop school for the summer. I would really like to be a stone down by then. That would make me 12st 9lbs. My aim would then be to try and maintain this over the 8 week school holiday. Don't get me wrong I intend to keep doing low carb so could possibly be a good few pounds lighter by the time they go back. But I know that it will be harder to stick to the plan 100% when we are away on holiday and days out etc.

As long as I weigh the same at the end of August as I do at the end of June I will be pleased.

teaandthorazine · 21/05/2012 09:53

So even though most of the weekend was a write-off, we did eat a fab dinner last night. Lidl were selling strips of pork belly for £2.49 last week, so I roasted them with 5-spice, ginger, garlic and soy, then had them with piles of stir-fried spinach, kale, courgettes and aubergine. Then blueberries, strawberries, double cream and greek yog to finish. Yum!

Pork belly has turned out to be fussy-eater ds's new favourite food - how weird is that?! It's amazing to watch this skinny little 8-year-old, who normally lives on pasta, scarfing down lumps of fatty meat, but then it's soooo delicious who could resist? Grin

Protein shake with flax this morning (never seem to get bored of this). Am running out of my kilo bag so have ordered some new samples from myprotein, plus a measurer and shaker bottle [saddo]. Spoonful of coconut oil, vits, water.

This is definitely becoming more about health than weight loss for me. It's lovely to see the weight come off, of course, but what's more exciting is my new attitude to food and (handful of Celebrations at 3am notwithstanding!) the realisation that, most of the time, I neither need nor want crap food.

I find myself looking forward to a plate of veg! That is a massive sea-change for me. Amazing - thanks BIWI Wink

Thegoddessblossom · 21/05/2012 10:03

Breakfast: Greek yog (Tescos only had fat free total can you believe it? so added cream) with some blueberries.

My bottom is much runnier the mre fat i eat - sorry if TMI! DO you think I will just get used to it?

Hepsibaaah · 21/05/2012 10:10

Think I'm the victim of carb-creep. 1 lb back on (but daily weigh has shown a substantial wobble either side of that), so it's back to BC for me.

tea could you post a link to the protein shake you use please? I dont always have time to cook brekkie, so it's been a mix of egg or smoked mackerel or cold leftovers. A protein shake might be an ideal alternative.

Was whisked away for the w/end and am proud to report restaurant eating was reasonably ok! Bar dessert of course. And the wine. Actuall, my hardest task this week has been supporting exam-stressed teen tbh, and whilst I've kept her going with [mostly] healthy snacks, from my perspective many are carb-loaded - I'd forgotten just how lovely a banana tastes!

Going to spend this week being uber strict with myself, see if I can get back on-track. The 'lowcarb gourmet' book arrived last week too, so I'm hoping for menu inspiration!

DoUntoOtters · 21/05/2012 10:12

Six weeks already? I seem to have settled into a proper routine with this WOE now. Not missing pasta/rice/potatoes at all, or bread really, except for a couple of days when I was feeling really tired.

teaandthorazine · 21/05/2012 10:20

Hepsibaah - I use this. Comes in lots of different flavours (am on choc nut atm) and seems to be one of the cheaper brands out there. I mix it with water and then add a splosh of double cream to up the fat content.

Have also started adding a spoonful of this which does make it rather more, umm, 'challenging' to drink but I just keep my mind on all those omega 3s Grin. Plus, it keeps me full for several hours so I rarely need to snack.

GreenEyesAndHam · 21/05/2012 10:25

I've lost a stone now thanks to these threads and this WOE Smile

What a difference six weeks can make, I could spit when I think of the last year spent miserable and moaning about feeling like a fat blob

One thing I'm going to moan about now though ( Grin )...

WHERE is the plump, dewy, glowing skin that should be mine by now huh?

3-4 litres of water I'm drinking a day now, and difference to my skin? NONE.

Pah

Hepsibaaah · 21/05/2012 10:28

tea Thank you Thanks

vnmum · 21/05/2012 10:28

2lbs off for me this week, finally! I even got my DF to read the section about diabetes in Good calories, Bad Calories. Hopefully he will understand it and be able to discuss it with his doctor who has told him he should have carbs with every meal.

doradoo · 21/05/2012 10:35

Back to bootcamp for me 2 weeks till a posh family wedding so need to be at my best!

Also need to up the water as when I did that it made sooo much difference. It's really easy to not drink so much and it does really help.

So let's hope I can break the into the 70s this week (at last......!)

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 10:38

Just note that the flavoured versions of that protein shake contain not only artificial sweeteners (sucralose) but also citric acid - which is, apparently, something that can cause weight loss to slow/stop.

OP posts:
TinTinsSexySister · 21/05/2012 10:39

Morning! Just checking into the new thread - and just after I'd finally located the last one as well!

I'm doing Neris & India 'cos someone lent me the book but would be happy to switch to boot camp proper.

Where will I find the rules though? Please don't do a link - I can't make them work on phone or iPad

Grin
BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 10:43

Oh alright then ...

As a reminder, or for those who are new, these are the Bootcamp rules:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though as this is too sweet and very, very carby), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

And this is the allowed list of veg:

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8
Celery0.9
Broccoli1.1
Asparagus 1.4
Cucumber1.5
Lettuce1.7
Fennel1.8
Courgettes1.8
Cauliflower1.9
Avocado flesh1.9
Turnip2
Pumpkin2.2
Runner beans2.3
Swede2.3
Celeriac2.3
Bean sprouts2.5
Carrots2.5
Green pepper2.6
Baby sweetcorn2.7
Aubergine2.8
Leeks2.9
Okra3
Tomato3.1
Mangetout3.3
Shallots3.3
Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5
Onions7.9

And if you're vegetarian, here are the rules for you, courtesy of flipflopflap:

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and very, very carby), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. cashews). Stick to small amounts of almonds, brazil nuts, dried coconut, walnuts, seeds and peanut butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

BIWItheBold · 21/05/2012 10:44

Might I remind you all that WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EATING ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS ON BOOTCAMP!
