gypsey - I would probably give ripped another try, albeit I can understand why you may want to go carefully! Alternatively Burn Fat Boost Metabolism is good and purely cardio - no weights.Should be no arm issues. That said, there is a fair amount of jumping! No More Trouble Zones is purely weights/strength (although you definitely puff and pant at times) so no jumping. The pace is more controlled so although there is plenty of upper body work, you should be ok. Both of these are longer (about 45 mins with cool down) but spilt into 6 minute sections so you can choose to do just 4 or 5 if short of time. The first section of BFBM is quite easy, for example, so I skip the warm up and go straight to it, as I feel it is easy enough to be a warm up.

I am so happy to have discovered this thread. I started 30 day shred last week and did it 4 times - it is the most consistently i have done anything since before DD1 was born. I found it tough - only on L1, but i can already detect slight improvement in my abilities. My arms ached after it. Found cardio ok but struggled with weights. Using 1.5kg.
Watching this thread will definitely motivate me, keep up the good work ladies.

notyummy · 19/04/2012 09:36

Welcome Yummy - 1.5 kg is perfectly respectable. You will definitely start seeing the difference soon in strength and definition!

greenfig · 19/04/2012 09:36

Welcome to newbies. V excited to hear ripped & killer not so tough as you all made me thinkGrin time for more shopping!
Hope your back's a bit better today 3 steps & sorry to hear your woes getorf my elbow is a little less sore I think. The apprentice was hysterical! I don't think retro guy will ever live it down!
A day of baking cakes & will see what I'm in the mood for later.

rosalux · 19/04/2012 10:14

RI30 L3D4. Definitely not enjoying this level as much as 1 and 2 or shred. Not sure if it's just not as fun or if it's because of my shoulder pain (now much improved after 2 physio sessions) or the fact that I stopped JMing for 10 days and now feel so achey it's like I've never exercised before! Ho hum. Just one more day before weekend of rest and hopefully can step up a gear next week. Please tell me L4 is more fun!

notyummy · 19/04/2012 10:20

Hmm. Not sure if 'fun' is the right word Rosa.... There is a REALLY hard cardio section in the first circuit of L4 (haven't done in it for a while - think it is burpees and something else...?) I am not saying that to depress you - just so you don't feel demotivated when you hit it at the start. It's not that bad all the way through! I actually quite like the squat things in L3 where you roll backwards, do a reverse curl and then get up again...

Was hoping to do something last night but migraine put paid to that. Will be doing one level of something tonight though (possibly Ripped) with DH. Long (ish) run tomorrow. Trying to build my distance back up. Maybe 8/9 miles.

rosalux · 19/04/2012 10:20

Also, am planning on doing 6W6P when I finish RI30. I did L1 once or twice before RI30 and found it not to be a challenge, but I'm a bit scared of L2. Would you recommend skipping L1 or trying it again?

notyummy · 19/04/2012 10:28

Perhaps one more go at L1 with the hard version of everything and weights whenever you can? Then up to L2 if L1 still seems ok/easy. I don't think L2 is that much harder on the core that L1 tbh - the cardio aspect is significantly tougher though.

gypsyfloss · 19/04/2012 11:30

Thanks notyummy. Tbh my shoulder was playing up from the shred and Rin30 just exacerbated it.

I'll have another crack at Ripped, starting at L2 and perhaps alternate it with 6w6pk. It's not weight loss I'm after , just the mother of all abs toning so I think a less gung-ho approach than before might be sensible.

I was browsing through one of the US fitness DVD sites as they have a far more extensive and varied range than we do over here. I have discovered there is a far higher sensitivity to any type of swearing and profanity, however mild, in the US reviews of Jillian's workouts. Being a coarse Brit I do tend to scratch my head in puzzlement over the vast amount of swearing that I appear never to have noticed or even heard in all my hours spent with Jillian.

But by favourite review for Jillian's DVDs has to be this one:

"Sorry Jillian fans, but I could not stomach this DVD. Jillian's snarling, curled-lip attitude, her use of near profanity, and worst of all, her sexually suggestive interactions with fellow exercisers just made me feel ill. The workouts seemed legitimately intense and I have no doubt I'd have ended up liking the results in terms of weight loss and muscle tone. But I've returned this DVD to collage and will exchange it for something that doesn't cause soul decay. "

Good grief!! Easily upset or what?! I actually like her down to earth, non-pouting/girly approach. It's what makes me put up with repeated viewings. Dh likes the non girly thing too. There's no way he would join me for many other trainers DVDs (Billy Blanks is the only other one he will put up with.)

Lifeisquiteabsurd · 19/04/2012 12:49

I have discovered a vast swathe of people who genuinely can't cope with the more boot-camp light style of being occasionally yelled at. Have never seen this mentioned as a negative in reviews over here, maybe as the British generally are far more grumpy, miserable old gits don't use positive re-enforcement so much. Plus anyone jumping around in an overtly cheerful, cheesy fashion while exercising makes me want to commit murder.

notyummy
You might want to try Bob Harper's DVDS as another alternative that your husband might enjoy with you. They are tough (I'd say he is a step up from Jillian), he has a similar style to Jillian as they worked together on the Biggest Loser.

You would need a multi-regional DVD player though or you can just unlock your DVD player as I did, worked fine and mine was only a cheap £20 affair bought back in 2005: DVD Unlocking Codes from Money Saving Expert.com

moajab · 19/04/2012 12:52

I'm usually quite sensitive to swearing and bad language, but I didn't notice any! Mind you I've only done 30DS, but there was nothing there to cause soul decay whatever that is!
I know I said in my last post that I only exercise when DH and DC are out, but actually my youngest is usually at home with me. He can't talk very well yet, so he can't tell the others how silly I look! He likes to join in and looks really sweet doing jumping jacks.... but really annoying when he decides to crawl under me when doing walking push ups or in the plank position!
So, 6w6p arrived this morning. How bad is it? Is it harder than L3 shred?

greenfig · 19/04/2012 13:19

No moajab. I'm off to do it now & if I can do it anyone canGrin!

notyummy · 19/04/2012 15:27

Thanks Life- will have a look! I like Bob on BL.

sommewhereelse · 19/04/2012 16:46

I've notice Jillian saying something 'pisses her off' but that's the only thing I wish she hadn't said in front of my DCs.

Happypiglet · 19/04/2012 19:31

Nothing for me today as kitbag a training day all day my head now hurts! Rosalux I am with you on the achey front. I am literally in agony of aches today after TWO days of back Jillianing and I o ly had 10 days off... It's like when I started back in Jan all over again. and I dropped back to L1 and then a L2 pf Ripped. I was doing L3 before the break. Why do I a he so much? It's scary how even a short break puts you right back at the begining.
Will do another L2 tomorrow and try to get back to some form of normality. I looked like John Wayne walking round today!!
I don't think Jillian swears at all I have never noticed it. She has some fBs turns of phrase tho! My current favourite which I have heard on two different DVDs is "transformation is not a future event it's a present activity" I love Americans !! I also thought I had to bring my "egg in" every day but now realise after this weeks Biggest Loser that she is saying I need to bring my "A game" every day! Grin

Happypiglet · 19/04/2012 19:32

I apologise for the awful typing and frankly bizarre auto I pad corrects! I really need to use the preview message button more!

nicnacinoonoo · 19/04/2012 19:48

Grin at bringing your egg in ha.

I've noticed the something 'pisses her off' one too but never thought much about it as the kids weren't around.

If the American's like all the cheerful stuff then they'll like kickbox fastfix. My dvd came today so just did the first workout. It's really quick actually and quite easy to get through but some of the moves are really complicated, think it will take me a while to remember what foot goes where etc whilst doing it at the speed they do it. Jillian has quite a few girls behind her in this dvd and they're all wooping and dancing in the rest bits which is a little cheesy for me but the kickboxing was fun. I watched the tutorial first which I think helped a little but some of the moves are just going to take time, they're not hard though and I think once I get the hang of them I'll probably do all 3 work outs together as I'm not out of breath at all after the first. But maybe I'm speaking two soon and the other 2 are going to be really hard ha.

Lifeisquiteabsurd · 19/04/2012 20:56

The pissed off comment is from Killer Buns, not Ripped in 30 where the concerns over irreparable soul decay come from. Maybe our souls are already so scarred we just don't care to notice? There are even comments in reviews about "profanity" in 30 Day Shred as well.

Perhaps they would prefer something with less chat and more breathing. This is a genuine workout with Greer Childers and she has made plenty of money selling these workouts to people:

I promise you it works the stomach muscles to a level even Jillian can't reach. Mainly from laughing. She actually makes a living from this stuff. Shock

notyummy · 19/04/2012 21:04

OMG Life- I needed more warning before watching that! More of a challenge to my pelvic floor than jumping hacks Grin. Absolutely hilarious. She looks like Krystal Carrington having been plugged into the mains. And those facial expressions!! I can't wait to show it to DH- he is out tonight.

notyummy · 19/04/2012 21:05

jacks

Jacksterbear · 19/04/2012 21:25

You called? Wink

Hahahaha re the soul decay!

L1 shred done today as I was feeling a bit crap and needed an "easy" workout Grin...

threestepsforward · 19/04/2012 21:41

Lifeis you very nearly made me wet myself with that vid, what on earth!?!?

I am transfixed, and while quickly changing screens to post this it all sounds like a low-budget 60s porn film (excuse the soul decay comment for those with a delicate constitution)

threestepsforward · 19/04/2012 21:42

And the 'you may need to stop and catch your breath comment' Grin All she's been doing is gurning at the camera!!
