Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

So whats your plans NY?

mrspepperpotty · 03/01/2012 09:35

Hello all, hope it's going well so far!

Wed am is my weigh in day (I find a mid-week day works well for me, to give me a couple of days to recover if I have a bad weekend!). So I just weighed myself for the first time in 2012 and I weigh 12st 10lb - tbh I was expecting worse, so the last 2 days of being healthy must have done something!

So - 12st 10lb is my starting weight. Aiming to lose 2 stone.

NewYearsRevolution - I've just done a bit of kg to lb conversion and it sounds like our starting and target weights are very similar :)

woahthere · 03/01/2012 10:32

Can I join in? Am starting diet today, havent weighed myself yet, its too scary as all my jeans are uncomfortable after Christmas bingeing! Will weigh in in the morning (gulp) I hope to lose 3 stone and am going to be cutting down on carbs, and then only having good ones like brown rice, couscous. All chocolate has been sent in to dh's work! I go running twice a week and do zumba and yoga so will just keep on with that, its the food I need to cut down on really so just need to get my head round it after weeks of bingeing!

mrspepperpotty · 03/01/2012 10:49

Just realised it's Tues today, not Wed!! Blush

NewYearsRevolution · 03/01/2012 10:57

Flojo - I'm still breastfeeding, so I'm not going to start any actual formalised diets. I'm going to stop eating the kid's dinners, cut out the crap, eat more veg (particularly soup - masses of bread and cheese in child friendly lunches is my downfall) and stop snacking after dinner. If I'm consistent with those it should get things moving! Also portion size. I was hungry my entire pregnancy and got into the habit of having large portions of carbs with everything. If that doesn't work, I think weightwatchers. I've done it before and it's pretty compatible with a family. Can't do anything that involves me having different meals - my time is too squeezed already!

MrsPepperPotty - That's good, we can spur each other on! I started thinking in kilos when I found my weight in stone and pounds was so far from what I felt was 'my normal' that I just gave up before I started Blush. Kilos isn't as emotional for me so I can focus on the numbers.

TartyMcFarty · 03/01/2012 13:30

I did wonder, MrsPepperPotty! Grin

Food is good today so far b all healthy, low GI stuff. DD isn't looking like having a nap any time soon though, so no exercise yet and I'm working this evening.

WhatToDoWithLife · 03/01/2012 13:38

Is it too late to join? I over did it at xmas a bit and after having shed a lot of weight over the course of 2011, I can barely fit into my work clothes today :(

TartyMcFarty · 03/01/2012 13:42

Not at all, come on in. Well, DD has dropped off so I'm going to do a kettlebell workout. This will hurt!

AngryFeet · 03/01/2012 15:17

I got started today and decided to go healthy plus cal counting. My weeks menu is:-

Breakfast - either wholegrain toast (no butter) with 2 scrambled eggs OR yogurt, fruit and slice wholegrain toast
Lunch - either veggie soup or wholemeal pitta filled with roasted veg and pesto chicken pieces
Snack - carrot sticks and houmous
Dinner - either chicken parmigiana or salmon and rice or pasta with tonnes of veg

This way I get lots of fruit and veg which should make me feel better as I feel bloated and tired and rubbish right now. Weighed in at 13st 11. First goal of losing 1 stone I would like to complete by half term.

Good luck ladies!

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 17:07

Just weighed myself, 12st 11lb! BMI 29.79! Not that surprised, I have been a pig! Grin
According to my wii :) , my ideal weight is 9st 6lb, so that 3st 5lb that I need to lose. However,I was 10st at my happiest so I'm going to aim to lose 3st and see how I feel then.

Not been to bad today but I'm starving now, can't wait for my omelette tonight, going to chuck in a big salad for good measure! :)

NewYearsRevolution · 03/01/2012 17:58

I have just done my BMI to spur me on. It's 26.5. The NHS have confirmed I am officially fat Blush.

Getting down to 70kg would put me well within healthy (it's 11 stone, but I'm tall). Getting down to 68 would get me back to the weight I was at university 11 years ago (when I thought I was fat, in that early twenties way you do, but actually I was a slim size 12 and looked pretty damn fab. If only I had realised at the time Sad).

Tomorrow I start in earnest - we had lots of guilty food around the house that still needed eating and DH was still off work so it still felt like holiday time. I'm going to soak some oats overnight for a filling muesli in the morning.

Vicky08 · 03/01/2012 21:43

Hi all, well done on getting started, hope it's all going good. This is the 3rd day of my diet and I'm still feeling motivated, amazing. My BMI is 30.4 so I'm obese. I weigh 84.5 kilos and I would like to get down to around 60 kilos.

Today for breakfast I had porridge, I'm not a big porridge lover so it was a struggle but it also meant I didn't over eat.
For lunch I had home made veg soup and for dinner a salad. I snacked on manadrin oranges in the afternoon to keep me going.

Today i've also managed to drink a bit more water which I'm pleased about.

What I still have to get my head around is exercise, I have the Shred and weights sitting on the table looking at me, must do it tomorrow.

Night all, hope you've all had a good day.

putyourhatonsweetie · 03/01/2012 22:11

Hello all, just checking in, NYRevolution I know what you mean about kilos, I am working in kilos as just a small change to help me slipping into old habits. stone and pounds emotional for me too and I need to get a grip. I also wish I had known I was slim! hey ho.

any tips for family friendly vegetarian recipes? One of the things that keep me motivated is eating really delicious healthy food so that I don't feel like I am being deprived. Last night we had a lovely salad with spinach leaves and roasted squash and peppers, and its curried chickpeas tonight.

Flojo1979 · 03/01/2012 22:16

I didnt even notice MrsPP!!
Not too late to join WhatToDo, I havent even started my diet.
Went to first WW meeting today, nothing like i expected.
Half a dozen older biddies folk sat round knitting, I thought I'd turned up at wrong place!
Motivational talk didnt go well, I've just scoffed a load of biscuits :(
I decided since I dont start logging my food til tomorrow then I could eat loads again today, how bad is that for an excuse?!
My 'weigh in' was worse than expected, I'm 14st 3lb (5'10" - another excuse!)and need to lose 4st.
But on a good note I'm booked in for "Trim and Tone" class at gym tomorrow.
WTF is trim and tone?! Never been, hope its not gonna kill me cos I get puffy just running up the stairs for something these days.

NewYearsRevolution · 03/01/2012 22:19

I do a lovely shepherdess pie. It's a bbc good food one - masses of lentils, tomato, onion, herbs, simmer for ages, top with potato (although I often do sweet potato).

Veg chili? Also bbc good food. I serve with brown rice to be extra filling.

I'll have a dig about on their website tomorrow if you're interested in either of the recipes.

I'm after more veggie inspiration too- good way to keep fat down. I'm simply not an atkins style eater, even though I'm not veggie.

Flojo1979 · 03/01/2012 22:26

I like that AngryFeet, losing 1 stone by half term, short term goal. I think that might help me to stay focussed if I'm just looking at a few wks at a time cos if i think I've got 6 months then I'll just put it off for another wk etc.
Vicky08 I'm not keen on pooridge either but i think I'm gonna have to give it a go, tho I'm guessing if i buy oatso simple golden syrup it defeats the object of the exercise or lack of exercise in my case
How do i find out my BMI? Do i need to use the fancy machine at the gym? only i really dont want to go on that in front of everyone.
I have drunk 2 cups of warm lemon water, thats a major breakthro for me, if its not sweet milky tea i dont wonna know.

NewYearsRevolution · 03/01/2012 22:30

No gym required (that's probably fat percentage if it's a fancy machine). It's just this.

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 22:36

Flojo I have oatso simple golden syrup. I would rather eat this than put tablespoons of sugar on plain porridge! Which is what I would do to make it bearable!

BMI calculator I hope that works!

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 22:36

Oops x-posted!

Flojo1979 · 03/01/2012 22:38

Thankyou NY, mines 29.38, so not good :(

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 22:39

Flojo1979 · 03/01/2012 22:39

Thankyou Sparky too!
Oh maybe I'll give Oatso simple a try then, I'll find out how many points it is. This points thing is gonna drive me potty!

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 22:41

At least its a kick up the arse!!!

Its what has stopped me reaching for some choc orange tonight! I don't even like choc orange! Hmm

SparkySparrow · 03/01/2012 22:42

Golden syrup is 6 propoints on WW.
Plain is 5.
Not really alot of difference.

Thats with ss milk! :)

Flojo1979 · 03/01/2012 22:46

def worth getting it then!!
I dont get these points tho, how can a yorkshire pudding be the same as a tablespoon of peas?!
