Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Vicky08 I have a problem with motivation to. I feel great for the first few days (possibly week) and then I get bored and think 'stuff it'. But I am really determined this time as I'm the biggest Ive ever been and feel abit shit!
I'm hoping the fact that posting (truthfully) on here will keep me going, and trying to vary it abit and not eat/do the same things week in, week out!

Hathall · 01/01/2012 19:33

I'm another one who has problems with motivation. I'm an all or nothing.
I can be quite happily sticking to a diet then we'll have a dinner out and thats it. It all goes out of the window after that. I've realised I can't do a Saturday night take away or a meal with friends.

My friends sil has lost 3 stone in 4 months. Great for her but my friend did complain that she was a pain in the arse at family occasion as often she would refuse to eat anything and just have a salad or some fruit. She said she had to do this otherwise she'd fall off the wagon.

I think I need to become a pain in the arse.

Vicky08 · 01/01/2012 19:41

I feel exactly the same SparkySparrow after a few days I get bored and give up. I'm also at my biggest, I'm a size 18 now and when I got married 6 years ago I was a size 10! I'm thinking of the summer and how I want to get back into a bikini again, that's my main motivation but I'm trying to have short term goals to make it easier; my birthday, a mini break away, things like that. This time it has to work because it's the first time I've been really determined.

BelinaTheTurkey · 01/01/2012 20:58

Me me, I'm in! DS2 is nearly 4 months, so think I've given myself enough of a break, time to stop using bfing as an excuse to eat cake after every meal! Got about 2 stone to lose, but want to do it slowly so it doesn't all come straight back on.

Have two family weddings next year and want to buy a pretty dress, but don't want to buy above a 12, so should be incentive. Also my sister got two of my wedding photos framed for me for christmas, which are going on the wall by the kitchen door, will hopefully stop me in my tracks when I'm heading snackwards

Hopefully will start cycling to work, but haven't got the time at the moment as I need to get DS2's bedtime routine sorted before I leave for work (night shifts)

Night shifts are a nightmare though, so much snacking temptation!

putyourhatonsweetie · 02/01/2012 02:56

hello all

I'd like to jump in as well if I may. weigh 70 kg at the moment and as I'm a short arse would love to be around 50 .... but 60 is a more realistic goal for now.

hear you all on the photographs, we took family Christmas snaps ...we all look really happy with our children but when I look at them all I can see is fat arms Sad

I'm using mfp as portion size is my downfall (I serve myself the same as my tall slim very active dh Blush. also shredding and shifting my fat arse.

good look all, we can do it.

Vicky08 · 02/01/2012 11:39

Hi everyone. Well this is day 2 of my diet and so far so good. Later I'm going shopping for some healthy foods, actually quite excited. One question for those who have hot water and lemon, how much lemon do you put into the water?

SparkySparrow · 02/01/2012 14:38

Right, so the diet has officially started.
I had porridge for breakfast, (which was a struggle, as I don't normally eat breakfast. Dare say I'll get used to it.) and have just got back from lunch out with dh. I'm very proud of myself as I resisted the urge to have a baguette/fry up/cake, and settled quite happily for a chicken salad.

Another question, has anyone got any suggestions for a low fat and simple salad dressing?

putyourhaton What is mfp? I have a portion size problem as well. For some reason I seem to think that if my plate isn't full then its not enough. Always eat the same as dh.Blush

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:03

I'm in. I've put on 3 stone in just 2011 alone. I'm not overly big, or so i keep telling myself, I've gone from size 10 to size 16. I have had to buy loads of clothes, which i dont want to, I'd rather lose the weight!
I'm off to Italy for 2 wks in august and would love to lose at least 2 stone by then. I'm planning on going to my first Weight Watchers meeting on tuesday and I'm a lil scared! Not sure what to expect, but I'm hoping by having a weekly weigh in, I'll be motivated to stop munching and start exercising. My weakness is, I have early tea with the kids about 4-5pm and then continuing grazing all evening when they r in bed and dont stop eating til about 10pm.

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:08

I know what u mean chocolatespiders, I never feel full, I'm sure i am and its just habit!

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:19

Sparky, I got bought the Zumba Wii game for my birthday, 3 months ago and its still in polythene wrapper Xmas Sad
Gonna go to WW tomorrow and start diet from there, trouble is last couple of days i've decided i need to get shut of all the junk food, so I've been eating it all in time for my diet!!

SparkySparrow · 02/01/2012 15:25

Flojo Iv'e unwrapped mine but haven't used it yet. Need to wait for dh to go back to work before I make a tit of myself. Grin

I'm going to do WW to but not going to any meetings (cant afford it :( ). I have the folder so am going to read that through and start maybe next week. At the moment I'm just cutting out the crap and not picking. Oh and trying to drink bucket loads of water!

If you start tomorrow make sure you don't have any junk that YOU like left, either chuck it (surprisingly therapeutic!), or eat it. Grin All that's left in my cupboard is stuff I hate!

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:29

Yes I'd like to know about the hot water and lemon thing to, never tried it, cant stand herbal teas or lemsips etc so not sure, but i drink tea all day when I'm not at work, and working in a school, I'm off quite alot!!

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:31

I've been so bad that when I've eaten all the junk food and decided no more, I've done a u turn, raided the cupboards and found nothing but a bag of flour n eggs etc and made a cake and ate it in one evening Xmas Shock

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 15:33

That was the plan Sparky, except I got lured by the half price xmas cakes etc a couple of days ago.
I'm going to do my shopping online, that way I wont be tempted by the offers!

Vicky08 · 02/01/2012 18:30

I also have a problem with portion control and I always have to finish everything on my plate, it's going to be really hard to change that habit.

Just back from food shopping and bought lots of healthy stuff, no rubbish so now I feel really motivated although I don't know know if that will still be thecase at 10.00 tonight when the kids are in bed and I'm sat on the sofa watching TV.

Today I had a scrambled egg on toast and a glass of hot water and lemon for breakfast, a chicken and veg wrap for lunch and baked chicken and veg for dinner.

With so much chicken I'm going to grow wings. Tomorrow will have to be fish I think.

So far I've drunk 4 glasses of water, hopefully get 2 more in before bed.

I'm still not too sure about the hot water and lemon thing, how much lemon are you suppossed to use? Anyone know?

Have a good evening everyone.

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 18:36

I'm the same with potion sizes, tho I was just planning on cutting out the junk food afterwards first and then cutting down the portion sizes later. Or do u think i should go cold turkey? and start as i mean to go on?

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 18:39

I think i need to buy smaller plates!
So do u squeeze lemon in to the water? I thought u just put a slice of lemon in the cup

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 20:55

Well I have just booked four classes at the gym for over the next 2 wks. Spinning, body pump and 2 trim and tone. I just hope i can keep up, cos I'm so out of shape Xmas Blush

TartyMcFarty · 02/01/2012 20:58

Well done with making a start Vicky08 and SparkySparrow Now all my parties are over (yeah, I know, I know!!) I'm ready.

I've been drinking water and lemon and eating porridge in the mornings too. Tomorrow I have some fresh soup for lunch and salmon with veg for dinner. We have some houmous in, so I'll do some carrot and cucumber sticks for snacks, as well as fruit. I'm doing some tuition until 8pm, so will need to think of a way to avoid getting too hungry ...

DD's nap permitting, I'll do my kettlebell DVD in the afternoon and a run on Weds. If she doesn't sleep, the DVD will have to wait until Thursday! I'll be running on Friday afternoon and spinning on Saturday morning, so there's a start Smile

TartyMcFarty · 02/01/2012 20:59

Good luck with your WW meeting, Flojo

DistantShip · 02/01/2012 21:16

Sparky MFP is myfitnesspal.com a website which tracks your goals, food, exercise etc and niftily works out how many calories you should eat each day. If you join up, track me down as FairyBlueBell

I use it to keep track of food mainly - as writing it down makes me less keen to explore the contents of the fridge and graze away the evening.

Had a good day today - day 1 of low carbing. Feel good, but know that I will have a headachey day on day 4 (when the sugar cravings will be at their peak). Good job I'll be working from home that day.

Well done to all who have started already, and good luck to those who kick off tomorrow!

putyourhatonsweetie · 02/01/2012 21:42

well done all, sounds like you have all made a great start. Sorry for the acronym sparky but I see you have been answered by distantship. I think myfitnesspal is great for forcing me to watch my portion control.

I have eaten really well the last couple of days, porridge, hot water and lemon (just shove a slice in the cup), plenty of salad, tofu stirfry. I'm in Queensland so it should be easy to eat loads of salad, and it is, but need to step away from the iced coffees! and it is so bloody hot at the moment thta timing is everything for exercise, did do level 1 day 2 shred though.

I'm another one for being all or nothing and for losing motivation, perhaps this time will be different ;)

SparkySparrow · 02/01/2012 21:44

DistantShip I'm already getting headaches. :( Glad I'm not the only one who gets them. I must have had a ridiculous amount of sugar over the past few weeks. Blush I may have a look at MFP when I get a minute.

Iv'e just realised that I haven't weighed myself yet, (threw my scales out a few weeks ago) will have to buy some tomorrow! Not looking forward to that!

Flojo1979 · 02/01/2012 22:36

I found MFP a right pain, you spend ages scrolling thro food lists, tho i suppose you r right, it keeps your hands busy and not in the crisp bag!
I tried the Atkins a couple of yrs back and i was soo sooo ill, headaches were horrendous, never again!

NewYearsRevolution · 02/01/2012 22:39

Can I join in? I'm a bit late to this, but I really need to start losing the baby weight. DD2 is 7 months old and I've not shifted any weight since about the third week Blush.

To keep me motivated, I am going to fess up that I weighed myself this morning and was 81.5kg. I want to get down to 70kg...
