Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

I'm another one against the tablets Fazsaeed. If it were that simple there would be no overweight people in the world would there? It's a short term, quick fix with the possiblity of bad side effects.

There are hundreds of things to eat, which taste delicious and are so good for your hair, nails, skin, heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes, teeth. Give yourself a treat and stuff yourself with those wonderful foods. Eat the rainbow. Make all your meals as colourful as you can.

Get your ds invovled. They are never too young and it will do him the absolute world of good. Setting him up for a healthy life is a gift so precious, and you can give that to him.

Sparky is it possible to reset your scales so that they start off at -4lbs when you're not on them? Just a thought. If not, I would be inclined to deduct that 4lbs each time because otherwise, well, it's just not fair is it.

Grin
SparkySparrow · 07/02/2012 19:00

I hadn't thought of that Fairenuff Hmm
Either that or drop chuck them in front of a car them again and buy some more. And get on them in the shop to make sure I'm happy Grin
What sort of scales does everyone else use? Are the electronic ones more reliable? These ones were only cheap. Lesson learned!

mrspepperpotty · 07/02/2012 20:32

I'm against the diet pills too Fazsaeed. I just don't think they're healthy. Doing it this way may take longer, but it's definitely better for your body.

Ideas for exercising when you have a baby: DVD when he's asleep, walking with the buggy as everyone else has said, cycling with him in his own bike seat. Or even if you don't manage to do much exercise the weight will still come off if you're eating healthily (but a bit slower).

My scales are digital - bought them in John Lewis I think. Brand name is Salter.

I've been quite good today - porridge with skimmed milk, wholemeal toast with salmon pate for lunch, veg soup for supper. Snack was 2 squares of green & black's chocolate (50 cals total!) and half a plain biscuit that DS2 kindly passed on to me to finish at toddler group! Will have a yoghurt later if I'm hungry.

Hi everyone, the last 2 days have been a bit crazy. Today I've had a good day. Will be back tomorrow to catch up properly.

Nite all.

fazsaeed · 07/02/2012 23:29

putyourhatonsweetie · 07/02/2012 23:49

wow, good for you faz, no way you need the diet pills, do your very best with gorgeous food and keep moving ... oooh and I'm jealous of the new makeup!

fazsaeed · 08/02/2012 00:11

The make up is brilliant!!
It was a cheer up gift from mummy dear :o
£22.50. The colour just right. Only need a lil bit on for great results!!!

I think I should be a sales woman. I'm very good at stuff like that.

Bro asked me what have you been doing? You eat a lot of grass!
I said I've swapped the crap for fruit and I have a salad in replace of1 meal.

putyourhatonsweetie · 08/02/2012 02:28

cool, good for you. hope you are cheering up.

virtuous day for me food wise, cereal for breakfast, chinese leaves with tofu for lunch, yoghurt for pudding and greek salad (no dressing) with roast squash for tea.

CupOfBrownJoy · 08/02/2012 07:23

Morning all

Sorry I've not been on too much recently - no internet at home for a couple of weeks so I just have to grab the odd moment in work...

Weigh in today and lost 1.5 pounds. Definitely slowed down a lot in the last couple of weeks, but I'm only 1/2 pound out of target range now, so I'm pleased anyway....

Hope everyone has a good day Smile

Fairenuff · 08/02/2012 08:24

Well done Cup Smile. I think we can all expect some slow downs now, so perhaps we should expect to lose one week and maintain the next. This is where it is harder to stick to the diet because you think it's not working anyway, but it will be.

The tape measure test is a good one. Also, a great opportunity to get some workouts and 'tone as you go'. I met a woman yesterday who told me she'd lost 4 stone last year. I was actually quite surprised because she looked so petite and I suppose I expected to be able to 'tell' if someone had lost a lot of weight. But she toned by walking lot and looks great tbh Smile.

Spark my scales are digital WW and measure accurately to a quarter of a pound! But you can't use them on carpet, they are too sensitive. Fazsaeed glad the undies are a success. You deserve the treat after all your efforts. It's great to feel good about yourself isn't it Smile.

mrspepperpotty · 08/02/2012 08:25

Well done Faz and Cup!

Weigh in today for me too and I've lost 2lb! So that makes up for the zero loss last week. It's easy to give up when you have a zero loss week, so thanks all for keeping me going!

Cup - what happens when you reach target range? Do you have a new target after that?

mrspepperpotty · 08/02/2012 08:26

Cross post with fairenuff about zero loss weeks!

NewYearsRevolution · 08/02/2012 08:37

Sorry, I haven't been back for ages. Real life and all that...

Today was weigh in day and I'm 78.2. So that's a kilo over a fortnight (cos I forgot to update you all with the half kilo last week). Roughly a pound a week, so I'm happy.

Well done mrspepperpotty and Cup.

Sparky - bugger about the scales! Mine are digital WW ones too. They're quite good. If you can be bothered you can even have two profiles logged in, so it will automatically how much you've lost since the last weigh. Stops you cheating and weighing in between or you don't get a good figure!

Faz - Hand in there. Diet and exercise is the way to go!

putyourhatonsweetie · 08/02/2012 10:09

well done losers!

CupOfBrownJoy · 08/02/2012 12:02

well done mrspepperpotty

When I get into my target range it would usually mean I can stop paying for SW meetings, they're then free. Target range is 3 pounds above or below actual target.

Once I get to my target my next plan is to desperately try and maintain at least until the summer (so I fit into my wedding dress Smile) but obviously hopefully forever...

SparkySparrow · 08/02/2012 12:29

Well done to everyone who's lost! :)
Good for you Faz !

Not a great day so far - shop bought sandwich and crisps for lunch - though I did go for the 'lighter' option on sandwich and wotsits.

Chicken and roasted veg for dinner.

About to go to a friends house for a playdate, she is notoriously good at baking and also very slim. Not fair! Confused .
I'm off to go and practice saying NO!
Hope you all have a good day!

Chooster · 08/02/2012 13:19

Sorry, I popped on and introduced myself last week then disappeared! The only time i seem to be able to post is when at work Smile.

I've been using my fitness pal app and love it!! Its great for keeping me motivated and focused. Except for the first few days I'd leave off naughty things if I was getting to my calorie target - after giving myself a good talking to, I now put it all down. Anyway, weighted myself and I've lost NOTHING in a week. Although I feel better in myself, my clothes seem to fit better but maybe thats just water loss? not sure. anyway, will hold off weighing myself again until sunday and see what happens this week.

Am doing pretty well and sticking to about 1200 calories a day. Its quite easy at work (although today I caved and had a coronation chicken baguette! Just soup for dinner tonight I think!) but at home there is always treats about for the kids. But I'm doing OK. Will be much more motivated if I've actually lost some weight this week though.

nannipigg · 08/02/2012 13:33

Been back to the Hospital to see the Dietitian and I've lost 1kg....and hadn't even been trying, just trying to get use to my new diet really,It's hard at times but hopefully I can introduce more foods after another few weeks, reactions are calming a little too, so fingers crossed! So a Low Salicylate diet may be the answer.....

CupOfBrownJoy · 08/02/2012 15:03

nannipigg that's good news and just what a diet should be - you're not "dieting" but you are eating healthily and, lo and behold! the weight is coming off.

I must ask; what is salicylate?

Hathall · 08/02/2012 19:54

Well done all the losers.

Faz you're doing well. I can't believe drs offer diet pills.

I've been good but have been unwell for the past couple of days so no shredding. I'll try and get back into it tomorrow.

Dinner today was a bit heavy though. I made a Herby Lamb Cobbler. Was just the thing for today but 900cals per portion! eek.I don't think I had a whole portion though. I had the same amount as the kids and theres tonnes left. Good job I hadn't eaten too much during the day which was porridge, soup plus 1 slice of bread, carrot sticks and houmous.

Vicky08 · 08/02/2012 20:31

Well done everyone, it's great to know that all the hard work is paying off. Someone in work today asked me if I'd lost weight, I could have kissed them!

I'm having a hectic few days, on a course yesterday and Saturday :( and tomorrow night we have a parents evening so god knows what time I'll get home.

I've been being good apart from the odd glass of coke but I can no longer wear my size 18 work trousers, they look ridiculous :) Don't really want to buy anything new though at the moment so will have to try to work with what I have.

Today I had wholemeal toast for breakfast, 2 mandarins mid morning, grilled pork chops at lunch, HM tomato soup for dinner.

Vicky08 · 08/02/2012 20:34

I haven't been doing exercise because I still have a bad cough, I feel like a 90 year old woman when I walk up a flight of stairs, hopefully it'll be better by Monday and I can get back into it then.

lisad123 · 08/02/2012 20:56

Another 1.5lb off, total of 12lb in five weeks. Glad I lost this week, hadn't been great, missed gym because of snow and I had a monthly visitor which means I have eaten too much Blush

TalkinPeace2 · 08/02/2012 21:22

Vicky

  • pick up a pair of a size down at a charty shop - as you get smaller the deals at charity shops get better when I did WW and went from 16 to 10 I bought a whole designer wardrobe at charity shops

have just nadgered this mid week cos its cold and DH was stressed so we had wine with dinner - but shivering must count for a few calories!

lisad : that is FAB. are you feeling that much lighter?
chooster - good luck on the weigh in / measure in

fazsaeed · 08/02/2012 22:21

My clothes are looser and I know it's tmi but tummy seems to be less hmmm what's the word...flabby as tummy doesnt stick through clothes to say hi anymore lol.
