January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

I am confused now, I thought the podcast was what you listened to when you went running - is that not right? Do you need to make a playlist of music too?

Confused

And when is everyone starting....?

I weighed myself this morning and need to lose 2 stone. Sad

delilahbelle · 29/12/2011 10:52

Woohoo. Just completed my second run, it was a lot harder than the first one though. Having had a shower, I am now contemplating rewarding myself with the last of the Xmas chocolate.

emsyj I am just using the NHS podcast, all this talk of playlists is for people with the iPhone app. I actually don't mind the music of the podcast, it's not the best but some of the tracks are quite catchy.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 29/12/2011 10:52

I tried to download them. It said I had downloaded them but they are not showing up on my podcasts Sad

DS1 is coming round later. I will get him to sort it.

emsyj · 29/12/2011 11:02

Oh ok - quite fancied the playlist idea but don't have an iPhone. Sad Is there a blackberry app???

Dillinger · 29/12/2011 11:10

Ooh I'll join you but I'll have to start at the weekend as have the kids and no one to watch them. Have ran on and off for a few years, tends to taper off once the weather gets rubbish and the mornings and evenings are dark. Ive tried to find running partners near me but no luck as yet, and I really dont like running alone in the dark Blush

Father Christmas brought me a nano so Im going to give that nhs podcast a crack. Thanks for the recommendations Smile

Santageekmum · 29/12/2011 11:18

Welcome mudwiggle... The thread's gone international!

ems, the nhs does the c25k podcast and I think that's available on all platforms. However there are other apps out there under the umbrella of c25k that can help with route planning, logging your distance and playing your own music. Whether you just listen to the nhs podcast or download one of these other apps is up to you.

I'm still on the countdown to start next Thursday... In awe of those that have started already! Got my iPhone strap delivered today and am off to get running shoes... Oo er missus I don't think the treadmill will know what's hit it! Calculated my bmi and I am obese, nearly in the severely obese category, have a good 4/5 st to lose... Blush

turningitaround · 29/12/2011 11:40

cece is so right. Being Prepared by doing shed loads of shopping is my forte. I am very prepared, or at least I thought I was. What's this iphone strap thing you're all talking about, do I want need one too?

Santageekmum · 29/12/2011 11:42

turning it's an armband to put my iPhone in when running. I don't have pockets!

Dillinger · 29/12/2011 11:43

Thanks Santageekmum, Im in Bath, so its quite odd I havent found a partner as yet as Bath is heaving with runners Grin Id best go an blow the dust off me trainers....

jchocchip · 29/12/2011 12:16

Second 'run' done. Slightly faster and further than the first. didn't get rained on too much and saw a herron by the river. NHS podcast is doing me for now, and I don't have time to sort out another app and music at the moment so it will have to! I just put my android thingy into a backpack and run with that - means I've somewhere for a bottle of water too.

yehudiwho · 29/12/2011 12:23

WELL second run this morning - i ran much slower this time and consequently found it a bit easier than Tuesday, first 6 minute runs seemed to go easier (probably because i was running slower) and rather than slapping down my feet I tried to do the heel through to toe thing which maybe took my mind off the effort. Have to admit that by run 7 I was desperate to finish!
also unearthed the sports bra which is vital to stop me tripping over the boobs.

Gave me a boost to think of posting here though so very glad i discovered this yesterday
Will be the first to fess up to weighing 13 stone (omg!) and want to be able to keep eating but lose weight

MABS · 29/12/2011 12:26

well done to all you second runners!

cece · 29/12/2011 12:28

This is what I got to carry my mp3 player in.

No idea if it is any good yet as not tried it out.

Santageekmum · 29/12/2011 12:49

Congrats second runners!

Feel slightly ashamed that even though I started this thread I've yet to run... T minus 7 days though! Got my start date and I'll stick to it, although maybe if I get everything together today I might run this weekend...

I remember last years c25k thread with the poster 'midtowner'

She was in new York and ran round central park perimeter as she didn't feel accomplished enough to run in it with the other proper runners! Think she got there in the end. It felt odd, me in middle England and that poster in NY both if us at same stage training together. Great motivation though

Have downloaded 'moves like jagger' to add to my playlist

aliciaflorrick · 29/12/2011 13:26

Right I'm going to start on Tuesday morning, on Monday night I beg you all to give me a rocket up my backside to do this. My intention is to walk the dog quickly before the DCs wake up so he's done and sorted, then when I drop the DCs at school to do the run along the canal where it's nice and flat and not too many people about at that time of day.

My one MASSIVE problem when I'm running is my mouth gets really, really dry and I feel uncomfortable but I don't like carrying a bottle of water because I need to feel loose.

I'm so glad that the Good Wife is coming back too, I want to have her figure.

GypsyMoth · 29/12/2011 13:28

I have never seen this 'good wife' ! What is it?

I have opposite problem, j can't drink whilst running, at all. Don't take water bottle which I know us wrong, I should!

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 29/12/2011 13:33

Got the shoes today from a proper running shop (Runners' Centre Norwich if anyone knows it). I thought they'd fall over laughing but the man there (who seemed to run it single handedly) couldn't have been more supportive, kinder and informative - what a complete sweetheart. He sorted out the shoes and then recommended a (very) local fun run which is every Saturday morning which often has 200 people going. Might even aim for that as it's 5k.

Of course, we did need to take out a mortgage to buy the shoes they were that expensive so now there's no turning back........gulp.

If my sports bra arrives in time I'm planning to go out Sunday or Monday morning first thing. Keep an ear out for news report of a 36 year old woman barfng up both lungs simultaneously.

openyerlugholes · 29/12/2011 13:34

Emsyj there are a few c25k apps for bb. The best reviews were for one called 'funrun'. Was going to download that but treated myself to an ipod.

Love the good wife! Think I have a bit of a crush on her... Dh thinks she is gorgeous Hmm

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 29/12/2011 13:36

Littlest - The Good Wife is an American drama on More4 starring Julianna Marguilies. It's a brilliant legal drama now on to series 3 and definitely worth a look. It's the only thing I make sure I watch every week (or at least used to for both series 1 and 2)

emsyj · 29/12/2011 13:59

I want an ipod now....

Will check out the funrun app if I can work it out - not very good with technology.

GypsyMoth · 29/12/2011 14:14

Perfecting.... Thanks! It happens to be on right now, so have switched ice age off, and the good wife is now on!

Haziedoll · 29/12/2011 14:22

I would like to join too please. Currently losing weight and have lost 17 pounds and got my bmi down from 28.2 to 25.1, dread to think how much I have put on this week! Want to lose another 25lb.

I don't do any exercise but would like to run despite hating it at school! I walk a lot and live up a hill so get a little bit of exercise in my daily routine.

Is there any thing I need to read to get started?

TIA

yehudiwho · 29/12/2011 15:06

also intend to depress myself and do my resting heart rate now and see if it improves
