January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

turningitaround · 28/12/2011 22:25

Can I join in too?
I've got the app, got the trainers, new kit in post from sportsdirect and am really feelng motivated this time around. Last summer I fell at the dreaded week 3 hurdle, but this time WILL be different just as long as it doesn't snow
I'm doing it because I'm fed up with not being able to buy clothes from chain stores in the country in which I live - I'm tall and quite overweight since DD2.
I'm going to start on Tuesday. I'm surprised how much I'm looking forward to it.
Yay!

thederkinsdame · 28/12/2011 22:51

I'll join in, too, but as a very very unfit asthmatic who is shit at running I will need lots of support! I need to lose 4st loads of weight. but my real aim is to get fitter and feel more confident in myself.

I got my running shoes today (£39.99 in JJB sale) and also a heavy duty boulder holder. Next thing is to download the podcast.

I need some tips on controlling my breathing, as I lose control and then panic and then get wheezy. Any asthmatics got any tips for me?

ohbugrit · 28/12/2011 22:55

I take 2 or 3 puffs of Salamol 15 mins before I run. It helps but I still feel like my breathing is restricted so I'm going to see the nurse next week about it. I don't use steroid preventers so maybe I need to think about that too.

openyerlugholes · 28/12/2011 23:17

Style, could you let me know if the cd is any good?

Fluffy, you are right, it's not that long really! I might be able to sort out my own play list over the weekend Smile

Great to see so many giving this a go!

thederkinsdame · 28/12/2011 23:28

thanks ohbugrit I'm on preventers and an LTRA. I'm aiming to get fitter in the hope I can reduce my meds and reduce the number of infections i get.

NoseyNooNoo · 28/12/2011 23:31

Hello. I would like to join too. I am aiming to run a 10k race in the Autumn. I've been meaning to do it for years and have recently felt inspired. I need to lose some weight too but that would be a fortunate side-effect. I'm really wanting to have the end-goal of the 10k and a programme such as the C25K seems like a good stepping stone.

I have just ordered my first ever MP3 player, I am buying some running shoes on Friday from a running shop and hopefully I have some suitable attire. I can probably get away without a super-strong sports bra. I've worn them in the past and hated them. I should venture out and get myself fitted properly really

The children are back at school next week so I shall start then.

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 23:41

ILOU, turning and thederkins welcome. I've lost count of how many of us are doing this now! I showed this thread to DH and he said "wow, you really are serious about it. It must make such a difference to know you're not doing it alone!" Too true. Whenever I've been on a health kick I've lost motivation quickly, esp. as DH eats like a horse, does no exercise and is stick thin.

jchoc good luck with the cycling as well. I think if I sat on my bike the combined effect of rust and flab would cause it to crumble. Might be worth having some breaks between running and cycling though until you've got a bit fitter.

So, half an hour = 8 songs. Post your playlists ladies!

jchocchip · 29/12/2011 08:04

Well my plan to get up early and go out again hasn't worked, it is pouring with rain here! Will look at the forecast and see what that says.

fatcaaah · 29/12/2011 08:25

[Grin] cece

I read this thread last night and consequently downloaded the podcast and ordered some trainers and clothes from sports direct.

I've been faffing about for the last 2 years talking about losing weight and getting fit but rarely actually doing anything. I really lack the motivation.

Although I hate what I see in the mirror and photos always take me by surprise at how shit I look, it's still not enough for some reason.

My youngest dc is 2.5 and is our last so this should be it, a slim healthy me once and for all!

I've lost weight between my others but always seemed to have found the motivation easier, I've struggled on and off with depression since my youngest and think I don't care enough about me, but I have to do something to drag myself back. I'm hoping this will help me feel better about myself mentally as well as physically and give me a focus (not just the weight loss). I'm hoping that this thread will keep me going too, don't let me skive!!

Oops that turned into a bit of a self absorbed whinge! Apologies for that

I'm quite excited now Smile

Santageekmum · 29/12/2011 08:31

Welcome fatcaaah I'm glad this thread has helped to motivate you. Keep posting what you're up to and hopefully it will encourage you to keep it up this time.

Cece I'm going to perfect my shopping technique today...

Santageekmum · 29/12/2011 08:33

jchoc at the moment I am naively planning on running in any weather bar ice! Sure you can't get out later today?

ohbugrit · 29/12/2011 08:36

Running in the rain is great, don't use that excuse let it put you off! Grin Honestly, it's fine. Invigorating.

Stylelostinlabour · 29/12/2011 08:40

Open it's seem great lots of up beat songs some 80's 90's and trendy stuff to get you moving.

My nine songs are going to be:

Don't stop believing
Blue Monday - New Order
Rain Town - Deacon Blue
Jealousy - Will Young
Alright -super grass

jchocchip · 29/12/2011 08:56

I'm still going, just didn't want to start while it was peeing it down. Has stopped now, will go out soon! Route I was planning by the river could be very muddy, but I'll wash :)

fluffytowels · 29/12/2011 08:58

openyerlugholes · 29/12/2011 09:15

Oooh thanks so much style and fluffy - those are great to start with! Seem to remember one that got me going (and was the PERFECT running tempo) was 'I don't want to dance' by Scissor Sisters. So will download that too.

Exciting! Looking forward to getting going. Hoping my kneed will feel the same... Got shinsplints the last time I ran. Ouch. But that was because I overdid it. Again.

Mudwiggle · 29/12/2011 09:21

I'm in. Currently in NZ, but coming back to the UK mid Feb after two years so need to look stunning when I arrive. Grin Although it is p-ing down today and is likely to be the same for the next few days you will put me to shame running in a UK winter so that's my excuse gone.

Have lost a fair bit of weight in the last year (60lbs), but very wobbly and not very fit yet. Have always wanted to be a 'runner' and have started this program more than once, never finished it though.

Music wise, I have downloaded this podcast because the music makes me laugh and I'm too lazy to do my own. runningintoshape.com/5k-training-downloads/

I'm signed up to do a 5k run here on Mon 6 Feb, but that's only six weeks away... Oh well, best to start and work out the details later, right? Hmm

openyerlugholes · 29/12/2011 09:25

Wow mudwiggle, 60 pounds loss is amazing!!!

Will look at that podcast when my ipod arrives

MABS · 29/12/2011 10:17

DD put Podcast on my ipod so that's good! no idea how to work it though :( I will start this Tues, no time before then, family stuff on.My problem is total apathy, i have good gym membership, a P/T if i want one, and no real sweet tooth but i lack motivation to do anything. I am far lazier than lots of you making big efforts. I DO have a disabled child and do have fair amount of medical shit on always with ds, but when i am i going to stop hiding behind that excuse eh.. :(

thederkinsdame · 29/12/2011 10:19

I plan to start tomorrow (no pun intended). Podcasts downloaded, the only thing not ready is my body! Will I be able to walk after my first run? I haven't done 'proper' exercise for abt 10 years so am possibly the unfittest person here.
mudwiggle 60 pounds is an amazing weight loss. Well done!

thederkinsdame · 29/12/2011 10:24

MABS its not an excuse.. Life is harder with a child with any sort of additional needs. My DS has AS so I know what you mean re finding the time. The appointments and day to day stuff can mean you don't have any energy for anything 'extra' .

MABS · 29/12/2011 10:28

aaw thanks thederkinsdame, but i so hide too...honest. He has had lot surgery in last 18months which is when weight started creeping on. But i WILL start tues I promise, can't do wed though, have to be at Guys hospital. We will support each other!
