January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Ok ive looked at the nhs thingy and it looks good! Count me in! Not sure when i'll manage my first run. I'm VVVVVV overweight. Approx 8-10 stone overweight but i joined weightwatchers in may and have lost 5st8lbs so far and feel ready to approach some exercise now.

Will look into sports bra and running shoes recommendations, but can anyone recommend a sportsbra for my belly? Its huge Blush and flaps against the top of my thighs if i jump about Blush

Hi Guys

Just wanted to cheer you on.

I am currently on wk8 of couch25k and love it Xmas Smile.

I was 5 stone overweight have lost 2.5 stone and trying to run 3 x per week. Can currently do 25 minute sessions and some runs are harder than others but I still enjoy it Xmas Smile.

Don't give up or get disheartened of you have a bad run or find it hard work, I can honestly say the nhs couch app works. I struggled even on my first week and can't believe I can now do over 2.5 miles running.

Good luck and enjoy Xmas Smile

Vajazz, that's really good, well done you! Why not power walk the running bits in the podcast as wildstrawberry suggests? Less worry about flapping bits (mine are like yours) and it means you can start straight away? (I don't mean right this second!)

Day 1 is mostly walking anyway, although I will say it doesn't feel like that when you're doing it! Basically 5 min warm up walk, 1 min running, 90 second walk, repeat about 8 times, then a 5 min cool down walk. Takes about half an hour - I cover around 2 miles, which when I think that I literally could not walk more than a few dozen metres only a few months ago does cheer me up (one of the main symptoms I had was proximal myopathy, or muscle weakness).

Well, thanks for inspiring me OP! I've ordered trainers, tracksuit bottoms and a top for myself and DD.

I will now try to enjoy the mountain of chocs in this house this week, in the hope by next week, I'll be well an truly fed up of them and ready to start my fitness and weight loss campaign!

What time are we going out on Thursday?

I would love to do this but I dont really understand it Blush

Can you point me in the direction of some info?

I dont need to lose weight but I do need to get fit. Middle age has hit me hard. I really need to be fit and strong as OH has a degenerative illness and I still have three younger DC at home.

Really want to do this!

Oh can i join you too?

I started on this last year but stopped about halfway through. After seeing my dbro running his first 10k for charity last year i really think i would like to get to a level whereby i could do that too. I also need to lose a bit of weight, not too much, but i really want to do it!!

I'm going to listen to the first podcast to see what I'm in for tomorrow! But I can't start till Jan 10th or so, I'm staying with family now and then will have my bf staying with me for a few days. Haven't seen him in over a year so I don't think I'll start till he goes! Hopefully this is something I could stick to as I can't go to the gym anymore.

Thanks so much OP for starting this thread, as I'd never heard of this at all!

Does anyone have a link please?

Hi MrsDeVere - here's a link to the NHS Choices Couch to 5K programme, you can download the podcasts (which are just sound recordings of someone telling you what to do, basically!) to play on a phone or MP3 player.

Oooh this sounds interesting I'm going to have a look.

Vajazzler I hate belly bounce too, I was thinking of wearing a big pair of support pants, the kind the come up to under your bra.

I got brill ones from Primark for a fiver

I would like to do this and already bought brand new running trainers, ronhill pants, shock absorber bra and long sleeved top but don't have an mp3 player for the podcasts - any recommendations for one £20 or less??

Report
ohbugrit · 26/12/2011 22:24

As a fat c25ker I'd say wear control shorts and leggings - I do this and feel contained and comfortable.

I already had a cheap mp3 player (was about a tenner on Amazon) and so all I bought was a sports bra (£6 on eBay) and running shoes. The shoes cost me £70 but were bought from a running shop after I'd had them check out my feet and gait and tried on 7 pairs! My view was that now I've found something I love to do I don't want to jeopardise that by getting an injury, and as I am so overweight shoes were even more important. They were my Christmas present from DH :)

Other things I find useful are a waterproof shell, a beanie for cold days and a head torch so I can go offroad after dark. And leisure centre membership so you have access to a treadmill if it's snowy or icy. But these were things i had anyway.

Do it do it do it, you won't regret it!

What mp3 player have you got ohbugrit???

Report
Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 22:46

Welcome all! The more the merrier I say! My DH is still dubious that I'll even start so now have to prove him wrong...

Tribpot thanks for the link and addressing people's questions

Vajazzler and Bexy well done on your substantial weight loss so far, very encouraging to the rest of us!

MrsDeVere I hope you join us, it's not just about weight loss, it's about general fitness too! Any questions please ask.

Emsyj have you tried eBay? You might be able to get a bargain mp3 player.

Panadbois I'll be heading out at about 8:30pm on the 5th, as I have a 4 month old the time I'm free is pretty inflexible. But feel free to go when you want, just update us on your progress.

Aims for this week: finish off the junk food in the house (!), weigh myself (eek!), buy sports bra, crop top, trainers, and something for my belly flap (think I'll try primark too). I've already ordered a case and strap for my iPhone!

Ohbugrit thanks for the advice - hadn't thought about a head torch! Think I'll do leggings and control shorts under trakkie bottoms, it's pretty cold out there!

Can i give one other bit if advice to the overweight people? Focus on the challenge and the pleasure of exercise. Weight loss might be a pleasant benefit but don't kill the buzz by putting yourself under pressure. It's enough fun that you don't need it :)

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 22:56

Very sage advice ohbugrit! I'm thinking I might limit my weighings to one a fortnight, if that. I really am doing it for the fitness aspect Grin

I'd love to join you but need some advice! Was really into running about four years ago (ran approx 27miles per week) but got bursitis in my hip and had to give up. Also tore a tendon in my calf 3 months ago.

D'you think that I will be able to start again and run without added injury if I take it easy?

I have an esselle sports bra (at least I think that is what it is called). Was expensive but worth every penny.

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 23:03

Open I'd be inclined to check with the gp first for advice, or maybe a professional at a gym? In any case, warm up and down and think about wearing support bandages on your calf perhaps? I'm no expert, hopefully someone here is! But it would be a good gentle start to get you back into running I'm sure.

Thanks geekmum, that's good advice Smile I have a tendency to get obsessive about exercise which leads to injury. I miss running so much but know I have to take it easy this time round (plus I'm not getting any younger).

Have an appt at the doctor next week (unrelated) so will discuss it then and just walk until I have had the go ahead. Will keep on this thread though.
