January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

I need to actually say I am in... before I chicken out!

I intend to do the c25k 3 days a week and Shred 2 days a week.

About to buy some trainers and such like to force myself into it.

fluffytowels · 28/12/2011 17:13

Yes I think it is the same but a bit more swanky Wink

Week 1 was run 1 min, walk 2, I think. Week 3 is 1.5 min run, 1.5 walk, 3 min run, 3 walk x 2.

But it tracks your runs for you, plots when you should run next and automatically moves you on, plus it works with your own music.

GypsyMoth · 28/12/2011 17:17

I have downloaded a c25k app which let's me use my own music. I'm doing it on my iPod touch.

The app also has a matching. Power walk app and a bridge to 10k for layer as well as a 20k app. All the same company, each app is £1.99

I remember from last years thread.... Swishy ponytails!

And our group sing was 'xanadu'

GypsyMoth · 28/12/2011 17:17

*song not sing!!

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 17:18

Welcome Metalsian

I started this thread for that same reason - I have no willpower myself! But that's what we're here for, to encourage and support.

Have just checked out the get running app - gonna try the nhs one first, then see what I think. I'm a cheapskate!

Metalsian... I have weights now so will do shred also ( possibly the new 'ripped') too.

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 17:21

Oh bugger do we have to think of a group song? The traditional one for me in all my outdoor pursuits is "Why does it always rain on me?"!

fluffytowels · 28/12/2011 17:26

I always like to start my warm up run with a spot of Amy Winehouse. Reminds us why we're all here Wink

Moves Like Jagger is good too, plus Robbie's Let Love Be Your Energy.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 28/12/2011 17:30

So what is this 'shred' thing? Another type of running?

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 17:46

It's an exercise DVD I believe. Pretty full on though. I might try it once I'm doing 5k regularly.

MetalSian · 28/12/2011 17:49

I got to day 12 or something of the SHred.
It is good but I got ill and gave up.
Want to combine ti with some cardio... so think they will work well together.

GypsyMoth · 28/12/2011 17:52

Shred us done by Jillian Michaels. '30 day shred' very intensive, 20 mons a day. Boy does it work! She was/is the trainer in 'biggest loser usa' there is usually a thread dedicated to it somewhere!

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 28/12/2011 17:58

I tried the Shred, but the second level triggered a bad bout of sciatica (watch out if you have back problems) so I gave up about halfway through. I could feel the difference even in that short length of time though.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 28/12/2011 18:02

Thanks for replies! Is it an American DVD? I've tried a few different DVDs and I don't really get on with the strident, confident, perfect people! I like Davina best. But looking at reviews, I don't think it's something I could do! I have over 6 stone to lose so maybe I'll wait!

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 18:16

I think the shred's a bit too much to start with, I've got 4 st to lose. and sciatica. So will try the running first!

I've got my sister's ipod so now just have to work out how to use it! She's got the c25k app on it already so that's one less thing to work out.

Trainers tomorrow or Friday, start next week! I'd like to start earlier if pos but I don't know when I'll be able to get shoes and we're at pils at the weekend .

So glad we're all in this together! I can't wait to start.

openyerlugholes · 28/12/2011 19:39

Okay, I've just ordered an iPod from Argos and it will be delivered on Friday! Will need to learn how to download stuff onto it before using it...

So I plan to start on Monday 2nd, once all the alcohol and junk food is gone!

Getting excited now...

I did shred for a few weeks.... caused me to tear the tendon in my calf which put me out of action for a good 5 weeks. The warm up isn't adequate imo.

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 28/12/2011 19:59

Right-o jchocchip, will try two different speeds of walking to begin with (probably snail speed and snail in a slight hurry speed to begin with Grin )

glad it's not just me going to take the xmas tree down delilah - roll on 2012 as I will be fit, healthy and lighter by my DS's first birthday in July.

jen127 - hurrah for more Good Wife fans!! What is going to happen with Will and Alicia?? How about Ceri [sp?] and Kalinda??

oh and style and yehudi - I'm seriously thinking about only running in the dark to begin with so as to avoid as many sniggers as possible!

good job you asked about whether to listen to week 1 three times Rebecca....hadn't even occurred to me - I was too busy hoping to god my sports bra arrives and does the job so I don't end up with black eyes as someone else said (sorry made me laugh but now I can't see who said it)

I went to buy trainers today with DH (who's v excited to see me move from self-loathing at the size of myself to hopeful at how it could be again once I've lost the weight and got fit....again!). I went to a Go Outdoors place but none of the trainers there fitted so I have to brave it and go to the local proper running shop. They might refuse to serve me, snort with laughter and send me on my way. DH says that won't happen and is coming with me tomorrow morning. I saw another woman checking out the running stuff in the shop I was in today and thought....hum, I wonder if that's someone from geekmum's thread???

openyerlugholes · 28/12/2011 20:15

Can anyone recommend a good running compilation cd? Have been looking at '101 Running Songs' but it has mixed reviews. Don't think I have time to compile my own collection before Monday.

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 28/12/2011 20:17

Can I join please.

Started yesterday. This is my second c25k I got pregnant last time. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen again!

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 28/12/2011 20:18

I love the good wife. So excited about it starting again.

jchocchip · 28/12/2011 20:53

Took the bike out today - I'm doing myfitnesspal as well and need to do some exercise to be able to eat a reasonable amount! Is it ok to cycle in between days or should I be having a propper rest day? Am going to get up early to try to do week 1 again. I've got a bike computer free app on my phone which I turned on for the run yesterday and it worked - giving speed and distance and logged the route on the map...

Stylelostinlabour · 28/12/2011 21:14

I've just downloaded 101 songs as thought a good enough mix to get me started then can tweak as I go along

scrappydappydoo · 28/12/2011 21:16

My reasons :

  • 4 stone overweight
  • when I walk I feel my bottom move Blush (not in a good way)
  • I am desperately unfit as in breathless climbing stairs at home
  • I am going on holiday in June and don't want to be mistaken for a beached whale in my swimming costume.
  • I keep seeing myself as a fat old lady which I don't want to be :(
fluffytowels · 28/12/2011 21:19

openyerlugholes It's only half an hour, which is 6-8 songs, so really not that much. I can give you mine if you like Xmas Wink
