January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Can't find my mp3 anywhere!!! Aaargh can't run without music! What will I do? Have searched everywhere!

NCIS · 28/12/2011 11:49

Tried this this morning, managed the first 2 60 second runs before my knee started to complain loudly. May have to do it walking at varying speeds but do need to lose 2 stone so please can I half join?

yehudiwho · 28/12/2011 11:50

I too am self conscious but took some advice from a runner and the nhs website.

  1. no one is really interested in you - be honest how often do you notice other people running or exercising -and if you do its only a fleeting thought. We are a lot less important to other people than we think!
  2. If you start to feel self conscious- change the thought to smugness. we are running and getting fit and the watchers are not- who is the more sensible.
3 .dont be worried by heavy breathing or red faces (I have a face that glows like rudolph's nose after climbing stairs) that's the point of the exercise we should be exerting ourselves or it wont work

I love the stories of weight loss - we would all be pounds lighter by easter!

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 12:28

Welcome Yehudiwho, Style, Jen and NCIS

Please remember on your first runs to warm up and don't push yourself too much! Delilah, Yehudiwho and NCIS well done on your first runs, hope it's not too painful!

I teach locally and one of the things that's put me off in the past is students seeing me, a red faced heffer unable to even jog without panting like a dog in summer, and commenting on it the following day. So am using my maternity leave wisely I think!

Open you'll have to sing as you run!

Style I'm going for the rock/power ballad. Eye of the tiger kind of thing. It's all personal preference though.

Oh and can anyone tell me how you can play your own music with the podcast? I have an iPhone but can't work it out...

Panadbois · 28/12/2011 13:24

Yeah! My order from sportsdirect has come this morning! New running trainers, pants and a top! Dh has put week one of NHS podcast on to my MP3, so no excuses! Grin (I'm sure to find some anyway...)

I've even thought about where to go running and when. In theory, its very doable. I will do it this year.

The reasons I want to get fit :
I want to loose more or less 3 stone.
I sang a comedy duet during or Christmas do and was so out of breath it was embarrassing. More cringeworthy than the singing itself Blush.
I want to sleep better.
I want more energy.
I'm a couch potato and I'm bored with it.
I want nice clothes to look good on me.

openyerlugholes · 28/12/2011 13:29

Damn, damn, damn, damn. Going to have to buy an ipod. Can't afford it and my trusty old mp3 had all my fave running songs on.

And there are no ipod shuffles in stock in argos grr.

MABS · 28/12/2011 13:46

Hi all - can i join? i have all the gear, gym membership, ipod etc but no bloody motivation. I would like to lose a stone and half, but a stone would be fab really. I can't start til Tuesday as family stuff till then :(

cece · 28/12/2011 13:57

Wow my Sports Direct order has arrived already!

Trainers on, arm pouch fits. Nw just got to see about downloading the podcast...

MABS · 28/12/2011 14:06

good luck Cece!

cece · 28/12/2011 14:10

Bah DH is asleep. I need him to find his ipod and download it for me, as I am a technophobe in that area...

Anyway off to clear a path to the boiler in the garage. It has broken down and the plumber might turn up later - if not first thing in the morning. Thinnk he might need to actually be able to get to the boiler.... LOL

MABS · 28/12/2011 14:23

i have my ipod but can't work out how to do it either cece :(

HavingAnOffDAy · 28/12/2011 14:47

Me please!

I'm on week four but have been doing it waaaaay longer than that - just not regularly enough.

Need to lose weight (2 stone + if I'm honest) and get fit ready for a skiing holiday in Feb. I know I can't lose all the weight by then (will power being a major issue Grin) but I can improve my fitness.

Will be starting back at the gym tomorrow

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/12/2011 15:00

Can I join too? I have the podcast, trainers, sports bra and motivation.

Day 1 for me is going to be the 1st.
How many times a week do you need to run? Is it 3?
If so, do you listen to week one three times?

Sorry, I am probably being really dense.

tribpot · 28/12/2011 15:10

Hi Rebecca,

Yes, in the first week all the runs are the same, so you listen to week one day one three times (or in my case, closer to 300 I suspect!). In later weeks, some of the runs are different - but trust in Laura to explain all to you!

MABS · 28/12/2011 15:29

i can't get laura on me ipod yet :( not good start..

thestringcheesemassacre · 28/12/2011 15:31

I'm in too. I've finished week 1 and start week 2 tomorrow. Got up to week 4 before and then cried off with pathetic illness excuses.
It's SO addictive.

tribpot · 28/12/2011 15:39

Have you got iTunes on your laptop/PC, MABS? How do you normally put stuff on to the iPod?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/12/2011 15:56

Found my ipod!
Bought a pedometer too.

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 16:36

Welcome MABS, having, Rebecca and thestring!

Impressed with sportsdirect, very fast delivery! I am heading to a running shop tomorrow to get my gait analysed. First test of running in public!

For those of you having trouble downloading the podcast, what's the exact problem? Mine didn't download at first, I then left them queuing for a while and restarted. Worked fine after that.

Good idea to list the reasons why we're doing this. For me:

  1. I am embarrassed at how breathless I get.
  2. I have rather horrific stretch marks over my flabby belly. If I'm gonna have stretch marks they should be over a smaller belly!
  3. I think that running might give me some space to think without having lo or DH around.

Open what were your running songs?

OP posts:
fluffytowels · 28/12/2011 16:40

Can I join.

I started end of November, then got a cough and stopped. Just been out again which technically gets me to end of week 3 but I'm going to repeat week 3 to get me back up to speed.

I've got a fab running playlist and use the Get Running app on the iPhone which is fab.

MABS · 28/12/2011 16:41

I have Tribpot, buuut so lazt I always get teen dd to do it, she back tmro so will sort :)

fluffytowels · 28/12/2011 16:43

Also, the Get Running app plays over your own music, just dips the music when she needs to speak.

ln1981 · 28/12/2011 16:43

Loving the poem santageekmum ,thats quite a talent you have!!

I must tell you all my bargain buy!! Im so chuffed with myself!! I have the trainers, and the ipod, but I didnt any jogger type trews for running on so in town today, I looked in all the sports shops (2)-not a thing. Went into Debenhams on the off chance-got a lovely pair of pineapple cropped leggings for £3!!! Its not really the weather for them I know (its currentll blowing a hoolie here!) but I couldnt resist.

So im now ready to start. have decided I shal start on Monday-start of a new week, and a new year!! Xmas Grin

Santageekmum · 28/12/2011 16:48

Hoping the poem will inspire...

Welcome Fluffy
