January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Ok, planning on doing w1r3 tomorrow. I've checked the weather and it should be fine. I haven't run for 6 days now Blush

Oh well, as I'm going to a "Christmas" party tonight I shall have to dance the night away.

topsmart · 07/01/2012 18:07

Christ there's a heck of a lot of posts to catch up on here. Well done everyone!

My trainers arrived this morning.
And this afternoon I did my first run! Blimey. Was pretty tough, hadn't realised quite how unfit I was! But I ran all the running bit. Amazing!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/01/2012 18:14

DONE IT! Thats week one finished Grin

I found it fine. I think I will struggle next week though.

Please dont let the thought of people seeing you put you off. I dont think people notice me at all and when I see a woman running I always think a/ I should be doing that and b/ good for you!
If she looks a bit unfit I think even more of her for getting out there and doing it!
I bet most people feel like that.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Kinky its really good for lifting my mood too. It helps an awful lot.

PS those running leggings I always thought a bit poncy - they are fab!

KinkyDorito · 07/01/2012 18:32

Hello MrsDeVere! Fancy seeing you here! I am attempting to turn to exercise rather than food as a coping mechanism Grin. You're doing well if you're already on run 3.

Abby My Fitness Pal is really good if you are trying to lose weigh as it tracks calories, exercise and there's a huge forum. I really like it. I've just paid for WW, and tbh, MFP is very similar in organisation. But it is free. So better Grin.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/01/2012 18:53

Hello!
Go for it Kinky. It works. x

AbbyLou · 07/01/2012 19:01

I have registered with MFP but I don't think I really understand it to be honest!! I've put in my food and exercise for today put haven't really learnt a lot. I need to spend some time looking around it I think.
I know there has been lots of talk on here about clothing and shoes. Can anyone recommend anything? The first thing I need to change is my shoes. I'm just running in crappy old trainers that are fashion ones and not designed for running. I don't want to spend a lot really but want something decent. As for clothing I tend to go for layers and then get too hot. Today I had leggings with joggers over the top because I wanted to keep my calf really warm. On the top I had a long sleeved t-shirt, hoody and a body warmer. I had to undo the body warmer half way round because I was boiling!! Any suggestions?

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 19:02

Welcome KinkyDorito and nomorecake! You bring our total number of runners up to 94 (plus 3 supporters who did it last year = 97) so you can't back out now, you're on the list!

I am a secondary school teacher living local to my school, lots of students know where I live etc. but I figured that:

  1. I am setting them a good example
  2. I can always say I'm trying to lose the pregnancy weight
  3. If they give me any cheek about going slow, I'll say I'm training for long distance events so need to pace it slowly
  4. I can always shout out something like "do you want to sponsor me?" or "this time next year I'll run the 400m on sports day" that should give them a Grin
  5. Most of them will probably be supportive, even if they don't say it!
Haziedoll · 07/01/2012 19:02

Grin at nomorecake listening to the running podcast in bed.

My trainers and sports bra arrived today. According to my measurements I'm a 30E, my old bras that I'm still wearing are 32DD but I ordered a 32E for my sports bra. It won't go anywhere near me I can't do it up. It feels at least 3 sizes too small. Sad Do you normally order a bigger back size with sports bra?

Dh still giving me daggers and acting as if I am the most selfish person in the world because I want to run. He generally gets fed up and down in the dumps in January.

It doesn't help that we are worried sick because my baby niece is critically ill in hospital. Please could I ask you all to cross your fingers and if any of you are religious to say a little prayer for her. She is only a month old and is fighting very hard at the moment. Sad

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 19:11

Haziedoll will be sending positive thoughts your niece's way Sad

and angry thoughts your husband's wayAngry

My DH has been supportive because I've said it's not just for me that I'm getting fit, that I want to set a good example to my ds and also if I feel and look better it may do wonders in the bedroom Blush but I assume you've already tried that tact?

debka · 07/01/2012 19:25

hazie will pray for your niece and light a candle tomorrow xxx I find the time I'm out running a good time for meditation and prayer actually.

abbylou I wear 3/4 length sporty type jogger affairs on my legs, a long sleeved t shirt, a hoody and a wanker jacket hi-vis vest cos I run in the dark. I'm always chilly when I set off but quickly warm up.

pan get running again! You know you want to!!

It's a rest day for me but I'm itching to go out Shock it is addictive isn't it! Had a brisk walk with DD2 in the sling this arvo, that'll have to do instead.

AbbyLou · 07/01/2012 20:15

Sending love for your niece Hazie.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/01/2012 20:19

I think the most important item is running shoes. Mine were only about £20 and I just bought a second pair for £9 from SPortsdirect.com.
They have loads of cheap stuff on there.
I only bought 'running' stuff because I wanted high viz for safety.

It doesnt matter what you wear as long as you are comfy and safe.

parttimedomesticgoddess · 07/01/2012 20:23

hazie positive thoughts for your niece from here too x

Just popped in to say that I did W1R3 this afternoon, so that's W1 in the bag for me. Planning to do W2R1 on Tuesday.

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 07/01/2012 20:23

Just catching up with the thread.....and wanted to say hurray for nomorecake. Genuinely made me laugh out loud though with the thought of listening to the podcast in bed.

cinnamon sorry you had a cruddy run - the next one's bound to be brilliant - law of averages (or something!)

hazie fingers firmly crossed for your niece (sorry you're DH is being a bit of an arse but ignore him and keep going)

KinkyDorito · 07/01/2012 20:25

ScienceGeek I love the 'I'm losing the pregnancy weight'. I'll use that and gloss over the fact that DS is 3, I've lost it and put it back on again plus some more in that time

Haziedoll My thoughts are with your niece Sad.

KinkyDorito · 07/01/2012 20:28

I definitely considering getting up early to go. Does anyone else go first thing in the morning? And if so, do you eat/drink beforehand? Thanks Smile.

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 20:39

I haven't gone early in the morning, but I'd recommend that you drink some water first, then get dressed, then go for your run. Eat when you get back.

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 20:39

Or perhaps a cereal bar before you go?

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 20:42

Ps. This thread moves pretty fast so before it gets to 1000 messages: do I have to set up a new thread for beyond 1000 posts? Or is there no limit to the number of posts allowed?

And competition time: who can come up with the wittiest thread title? Answers on a postcard please Grin I will choose the winner when I have to create a new thread!

debka · 07/01/2012 20:56

Yep, once it gets to 1000 you won't be able to add any more. Just start a new one then put the link to it in a post on this one.

Will have a think for the thread title!

topsmart · 07/01/2012 20:56

Ha kinkydorito I'm the same, tho mine's now 5 Grin

KinkyDorito · 07/01/2012 20:57

Yes, you need to do a new one.

I'm not very witty at the moment - I've just been on the cross trainer. I will have a big think Smile.

KinkyDorito · 07/01/2012 20:58

topsmart Grin bloody baby weight...

jchocchip · 07/01/2012 20:59

I like the 'I'm losing the pregnancy weight' my youngest dc is 13 and tbh I never lost it after she was born...

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 21:11

I think that excuse works best for me, my DS is only 4 months!
