January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Hi! Can I join in?

You've all inpsired me to start the Couch25K. I ordered new trainers from Sports Direct (got a free mug too), and downloaded the podcasts from the NHS website.

This morning, I did W1R1. I was surprised how hard I found it. Guess I'm not as fit as I thought I was then...

I used Food Focus when I'm on a diet kick. I put in my food and exercise for today and was shocked to discover that 2 slices of toast and Nutella was about 1000 cals Shock Reminder to self - no more Nutella!

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 21:28

Welcome Mazzi2fly, well done on your first run!

I was eating about 4 slices of toast and nutella a day during pregnancy, no wonder I put on so much weight Confused!

MetalSian · 07/01/2012 21:31

Can't believe we have nearly filled one thread.
I wonder how many we can manage.
If everyone carries on this well then it could well be 8 or 9, considering people are on week 1 and 2 now xD.

Well done to everyone who has ran today.
I wanted to but had no time, so it ended up being rest day number two and will run tomorrow for last one of week 1.

My thoughts are with your niece Hazie.

Oh and for those of you worrying you are overweight, just think how many overweight people are sitting down doing nothing every night, but YOU are up running and putting the effort in to do something about it!

thederkinsdame · 07/01/2012 22:47

Haziedoll I hope your DN gets better soon. Sending positive thoughts her way

LookMaOneHand · 08/01/2012 01:39

Haziedoll I'm thinking of your niece too - hope you get some good news about her soon.

Welcome, mazzi2fly !

I have felt sick (headcold, achy, tired) since Friday, so the last time I ran was w1r2 on Thursday. My plan had been to finish week 1 today and then start week 2 on Monday. But I didn't go out because I felt so miserable.

Realistically, my best chance of getting through the workouts is to stick to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, because on those days I can take a longer lunch break from work and use the gym across the street, and I am much, much more likely to get out and do the workout if I can do it during work hours than I would be if I had to go out before or after work (I only see dd for a few hours a day as it is during the workweek).

So - as I found my two 'week 1' runs to be not too bad, I'm thinking about resting up this weekend, letting my cold get better, and then starting back on Monday with w2r1. I think I'll be able for it, and it will get me back on the M-W-F track I want to be on.

Does anyone think it's a terrible idea to skip a workout before going on to the next week?

ScienceGeekMum · 08/01/2012 02:19

OneHand if you found w1 fairly easygoing, I don't see an issue with skipping ahead. Sorry you've been feeling ill, I hope you feel better by Monday for your run.

Reminder: competition time: who can come up with the wittiest thread title? Answers on a postcard please I will choose the winner when I have to create a new thread!

Vajazzler · 08/01/2012 07:34

I'm just back from my run week2 run1that was harder Than i thought it would be!

I think the next title should be.....
January c25k....so many of us running this way!!

rusmum · 08/01/2012 08:06

rusmum · 08/01/2012 08:17

Have decied too to set little incentive treats at set pointts. My first one being - I will allow myself that bottle of £ purfume as a reward for losing the 1st stone!

Thread title - Couchc to 5K, get off your bum and run today

rusmum · 08/01/2012 08:23

www.sweatshop.co.uk/details.cfm?ProdID=8220 these are the ones i have seen, ugly though

rusmum · 08/01/2012 08:29

cinnamongreyhound · 08/01/2012 09:19

Thanks perfectingpaddingtonshardstare, let's hope you're right!!

My fingers are crossed for your niece Haziedoll and sorry to hear your dh is being an arse. It's hard when something horrible happens but not a good idea to take it out on those who love you :(

For those talking about pregnancy weight I can't use that excuse as I lost weight with both of mine! Was less at full term that prepregnancy and then put it back on with every bf they dropped. Pregnancy would be a great diet for me! Sick for 3 months, no cravings for sweet things, heartburn and a stomach thats so small I could hardly eat anything!

cinnamongreyhound · 08/01/2012 09:21

Have you tried sports direct rusmum? I got a pair that say running shoes for £9, they're not leather and maybe awful when they come but my old trainers are knackered and I figure I'm only wearing them for 30mins 3 times a week. If I make it to a decent amount of running I may upgrade.

yehudiwho · 08/01/2012 09:26

Mazzi2fly- OMG I just used food focus for yesterday and I now understand why I am still gaining weight - I was 1000 calories over my maintaining weight - even with a run yesterday!!

it's a very useful tool to just watch what you eat - and they say just writing it down means you eat less just by being thoughtful about what you are doing

and for everyone impresssed by my woodpecker (ooh missus) I didnt see it but heard it - I will keep you posted for sightings! And see if anyone can trump my (unseen) woodpecker

jchocchip · 08/01/2012 09:32

Just off out for week 2 run 3 looking for woodpeckers!

ManyMomentsOfMadness · 08/01/2012 09:46

W1R2 just done! Still found it hard :(
Saw 2 deer though which was nice.

HalleLouja · 08/01/2012 09:55

I have some Brooks trainers and they are great. I went to a Sweat Shop place and had the whole gait analysis done. Worth it if you are spending lots of money and want to save physio bills.

MABS · 08/01/2012 10:02

agree re Brooks and gait analysis, really helps. just did 3k run but feel very sniffly and coldy :(

LookMaOneHand · 08/01/2012 10:10

Thanks for the reply, ScienceGeek. I'm feeling a bit better today, so think I will stick with that plan and move on to w2r1 tomorrow :)

My submission for next thread title: C25K: A Healthier Year is Under Way.

Well done to everyone!!

KinkyDorito · 08/01/2012 10:12

Thread title:

Sport's bras at the ready... January C25k

Or

Avoiding jogger's nipple... January C25k

My suggestions have a boob theme Grin. I like to lower the tone.

cinnamongreyhound · 08/01/2012 10:30

How about January C25K: we've all made a start lets keep up the momentum.

ohbugrit · 08/01/2012 10:46

January c25k - like Paula Radcliffe but with portapotties Grin

KinkyDorito · 08/01/2012 10:49

ohbugrit I like you are more on my level Grin.

Stylelostinlabour · 08/01/2012 11:28

Come rain or shine and lots of miles the C25K ladies with Smiles...

Shite I know but not good at this kind of thing...

Right have decided that week 2 isn't pushing me enough so I'm going to skip to week 4 - to be fair I should be able to do this as did lots of training last year til July for a life time challenge

HalleLouja · 08/01/2012 11:32

C25K the shopping is done let the running begin.

I used to be better at this thing and then had a second baby and my brain died.
