January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

geekmum also the only diet recommended by the Royal Council (or something like that!) of midwives. They also have a plan for bfers (I was bfing when I started).

ManyMomentsOfMadness · 06/01/2012 21:48

Thanks debka, I don't ache at the moment but will see how I am in the morning, the dogs may not go so long a walk tomorrow Blush

rusmum I have Zumba on the wii but never tried it yet, I might try that out tomorrow :) Is it good?

rusmum · 06/01/2012 21:52

i havent tried it yet either- anyone palled up on myfitness pal?
thought i could prance about with the kids with it hee hee

OneLieIn · 06/01/2012 22:10

Yes, there's a few on mfp, it is all motivation!

So we have four lessons learned...any more to add?

rusmum · 06/01/2012 22:11

4 lessons?

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2012 22:25

Do you wear heels normally rusmum? That could account for the sore shins.

I did slimming world when I was 16 sciencegeekmum and I lost 3 stone and found it easy but I was a vegetarian at the time so always did the green days (not sure if it's still the same now). Personally I didn't like the groups and tried to leave early. I went with my mum and she's been again since then but I'm happier just doing my own thing and I am in the right mental state to be able to do it with will power alone at the moment, without fear of having put on weight next time I go to be weighed. Plus I don't really have the cash, hence running around the streets rather than joining a gym or doing classes!!

rusmum · 06/01/2012 22:37

i wear heels prob about 50% of time , pumps the rest so could well be

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 02:59

rusmum I had aching shins after r1, I actually had to go slower for r2 because of them, but then they'd got a whole lot better for r3. I put it down to using muscles I hadn't used for a while and also impact. I don't wear heels at all at the moment.

Lesson 5: invest in a sports bra to prevent black eyes.
Lesson 6: ensure your circular route actually returns to your house

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 03:07

I am probably going to do slimming world when we start weaning LO. He's got low weight issues so don't really want to do massive dieting until then (2 months away now!)

The problem I have with previous diets is that I lack motivation to do them - I really like food! Plus it's difficult when my hubby eats what I want (he's 6'2 and weighs 10st, eats like a horse, does no exercise, has a drink every night, the bastard!) so I need something he can follow too without feeling deprived.

ln1981 · 07/01/2012 04:31

Hey ladies.just logging wk1 run 2.
Ds1 has just woken me up with him being sick and I now can't sleep!poor thing-he was off school the last week before the hols with a sickness bug-just hope its a one off and not another bug.He was meant to have a party this afternoon-he's going to be well gutted that he can't go. [:-(]
Right now to catch up with this thread seeing as I've missed it for a couple of days!!

yehudiwho · 07/01/2012 08:32

back and embarrassed that missed my r2wk2 on Thursday (no time) and Friday (no time) so am sitting here in my joggers waiting to go - always knew the new year starters would catch up with me
Finding time now I'm back at work a real problem - mornings almost impossible as i love my bed too much and then it gets dark so quickly at night and the park closes at 4.30 (nearly got stuck in there last week). roll on lighter evenings.
will have to make an effort next week as dont think running at weekends will work
well done everyone on running - cos that's what we are runners - I never would have imagined that I would be doing this a month ago - the NHS should stick adverts about this podcast to get evryone doing it

jchocchip · 07/01/2012 08:51

Im on myfitnesspal rusmum - it was working for me - lost weight over Christmas! Will find out if it has worked over my holiday on Tuesday when I get home... Same username as on here if anyone wants to add me :)

ohbugrit · 07/01/2012 09:18

I didn't realise myfitnesspal was free - count me in!

arabellacaterpillar · 07/01/2012 09:22

Checking in - w1r3 done! I'm buzzing :)

yehudiwho · 07/01/2012 09:37

back from r2 week 2 and feeling good - saw a woodpecker in the park!
the first couple of runs were hard but then it defintiely got easier. Having read some of the posts I now feel guiltier as some of you are running at 7- it just seems more daunting when its dark- intend to toughen up and join the later ladies next week

Aseaandthreestars · 07/01/2012 10:04

W1R3 done. I did a proper sprint in run 7, which has made me ridiculously happy.

I'm now in two minds - do I look at what the splits are in week 2 or do I just run when the nice lady tells me to?

Yehudi - you saw a woodpecker? Cor! I get all over-excited when I see robins.

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 10:27

Asea if you look don't spoil it for me! I'm going on my w2r1 today!

Feel a bit left out that I don't have a wii now... Was thinking about doing the shred Shock maybe after week 5 of c25k in the hope that I'll be fit enough for it then!

jchocchip · 07/01/2012 10:32

I love woodpeckers. My trouble is that I always want to stop and have a better look. Spose I could jog on the spot next time I see something interesting. I'm travelling back home Monday so wont be able to run so decided to have 2 rest days, do w2 r3 tomorrow and then run tuesday or wednesday depending on how I feel after 17 hours travelling... That way I can have another 2 day rest if I feel like it, I don't want to have a 3 day rest...

Aseaandthreestars · 07/01/2012 10:40

Grin Don't tell me the timing details - I'll try and blank it out. But let us know how it goes. Week 2! We're getting there.

I'm completely lost about where everyone is - should we post where we're up to (my inner geek is thinking about spreadsheets).

feralgirl · 07/01/2012 10:43

Ooh, a woodpecker. There's some good motivation for getting out and about more Smile

Just done W2R1 which was actually pretty good Shock My latest top tip is to have a great big argument with your DP before you go out. I was so angry with DH this morning for not sticking to the potty training schedule that we'd agreed for DS that I just grabbed my stuff and left; it was brilliant taking out all my frustration on the pavement and I bet I went faster and further than I normally do when I'm not full of rage!

My aim this week is to pick up my speed in the walking bits instead of just ambling along fiddling with the iphone.

Aseaandthreestars · 07/01/2012 10:50

Feralgirl - I hope you're talking again. No one else knows, but I'll share with you lot - the only reason I got round the race for life was the huge argument I had with DH the night before. Every time I wanted to stop I had another burst of righteous indignation and just put my foot down again. Rage - it can be your friend.

thederkinsdame · 07/01/2012 11:16

I needs kick up the backside from you lot. I'm still on week 1 Blush and still haven't managed to run the whole thing. Today was my 5th run and I seem to be getting slower and more unfit. My legs were hurting so much after run 4 - ached all day yesterday and today I had to stop running. The only way I can describe it is as if my calves are really tight and my feet feel crampy. I suspect it's because I'm so fat im unfit. But has anyone else had this? I feel really frustrated that I'm not improving. I need to look at my diet as it has been terrible over the past few days so I don't think that's helped. I've managed to put on 2lbs this week Sad

HalleLouja · 07/01/2012 11:16

I have just done week 2 day 2. Whoop. Might have to do week 2 day 3 tomorrow but will do it in the evening to space it out a bit Hmm

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 11:35

Thederkins no kick up the bum for you as you've been doing great. I think (and I'm no expert) that your aching in the legs is just your muscles getting used to this level of workout. If you're like me, carrying extra weight must be difficult too! How many rest days are you having between? I found it better after 2 days rest.

I know it says 9weeks but we are all individual, and the aim is 5k and fitness not a time thing. Keep going and just think, in a few months you'll remember that post and Smile because you'll be running nonstop!

ScienceGeekMum · 07/01/2012 11:37

Right I'm off out, if I don't update within the next two hours send out a search team, I will have hyperventilated and collapsed! Confused
