January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Thanks geekmum Wink

I'm really looking forward to the next podcast - its a really good motivator to get to the next level.

Vajazzler · 05/01/2012 07:25

Hi all, fab to hear everyone doing do well!
Hope your leg gets better soon AbbeyLou x

I will go out for my W1D3 run this evening. Hope the weather calms down a bit first!

RebeccaMumsnet · 05/01/2012 08:03

@ScienceGeekMum

Rebecca I have just written down the names of everyone that's contributed to this thread and the results are in:

There are 91 different contributors from the beginning
Three are wellwishers not taking part
Of the remaining 88, 56 have posted on the thread since Monday

When I get some time I may even open a spreadsheet on this to do some proper analysis... (anyone thinking 'what a geek!'? Well, geek by nn...)

Wow, thanks ScienceGeekMum, not bad going at all.

Thanks for that!

thederkinsdame · 05/01/2012 08:37

Wow, 91 of us! Must be the biggest running club in the country!

Well, I'm looking at the weather and wondering whether to venture out. It's windy, but dry so I think I'll give it a go.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/01/2012 08:42

Yeah well I may be into this running lark but if you think I was going to go out in THAT this morning Hmm

NUH UH!

Take your hand away from that big red button RebeccaMumsnet I WILL do run number 3. I just prefer not to be lashed by wind and rain. Call me soft but thats just the kinda gal I am.

openyerlugholes · 05/01/2012 08:54

Ooo that's interesting geekmum! Liking the stats.

No run for me today. Need to give my poor legs (and blisters) a day to recover. Shame as the storms have finally passed and it looks nice out there now.

Will attempt a run before work tomorrow.

Have a good run all those going out today!

thederkinsdame · 05/01/2012 08:58

Still here, still swithering Grin I was nutty enough to run on Tuesday and THAT was an experience. I could barely see where I was going in the rain!

BTW, MrsDeVere how is the 'gym'? Is it still in use or has it been closed down?

Lotsofchooks · 05/01/2012 10:05

Well I braved the wind and rain to do Wk 2 run 1 this morning - not as bad as I expected actually!

thederkinsdame · 05/01/2012 10:11

Well done Lotsofchooks

I did week1run4 have stayed on week 1 as I have yet to manage running for 8 mins. I did about 7.5mins today. Found it really hard going - my legs felt like lead, but I'm pleased I kept running. I think the circuit I do must be slightly hilly. I ran the opposite way from Tuesday, so I think I was running uphill today which is why it was so much tougher!

arabellacaterpillar · 05/01/2012 11:11

Week 1 run 2 done yesterday in the rain and howling wind AND pushing a buggy!!! I'm sure people driving past me thought I was a total loon :))

Felt pretty good, but my face was purple at the end!

NoseyNooNoo · 05/01/2012 11:24

Yesterday was run number 1. Today my thighs really ache. It's going to get easier right?

AbbyLou - I hope you feel better soon. Sounds really painful.

Am really impressed by people doing it with a buggy.

jchocchip · 05/01/2012 11:28

Yippee week 2 run 2 done. I'm still on holiday so don't have to brave adverse weather. Don't dare get phone out of bag to turn off bike computer so stats include walk back and trip to bank! Will try and fit another run in while I'm here!

weblette · 05/01/2012 11:39

Well done NNN!

W1D2 out of the way but my goodness it was hard! Doing in on a muddy field with the wind lamming into my face all the time wasn't ideal...

Who else is running today?

mishtake · 05/01/2012 12:34

Can I de-lurk and join in?
I did the first run today - all ok but a bit insane in this wind. Looking forward to doing it again which is a good sign.
I am recovering from breast cancer treatment and am desperate to shed the stone I gained with chemo steroids and get some of my oomph back.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2012 12:36

I'm running when dh gets home from work weblette, hoping the wind has died down by then! Taking the dog with me and hoping with straighter route she won't be as freaked out by me running.

AphraBehn · 05/01/2012 12:40

Also hoping to get out and do my second run brisk walk Blush later.

kandinskysgirl · 05/01/2012 12:42

I am hoping to run later but at the moment have the worst cramps in the world and have a huge headache due to crying all the way through One Born Every Minute. So am hoping week 1 run 3 will be completed this afternoon, however if it isn't I will do it tomorrow morning.

I am going to New Zealand in a week and a half and at first was going to stop whilst there but now am thinking I might be able to fit a few runs in...so unlike me!!

MetalSian · 05/01/2012 12:53

I should be doing a run tonight.
I will be wearing a hat so I don't get a headache like last time.
Hopefully it won't rain and the wind will die down.

Well done those who have already ran today!

dotty2 · 05/01/2012 13:04

Hello - can I join you. I've just done my second run. I am about 2 stone overweight and do do other exercise but find running hard. However, my DH started about 18 months ago, has lost loads of weight and is a real addict, so I thought I'd give it a go - also think the flexibility of running could work for me (I like to swim but never manage more than once a week because of pool opening times etc). I was using the Couch25k Iphone app, but I can't get it to work properly, so might try the NHS podcast.

Stylelostinlabour · 05/01/2012 13:13

I'm going out for my week 1 run 3 tonight.

Hoped on the scales this morning for those that need motivation to get out... I have lost 8lbs in weight since New Years Eve just by running and cutting out bread and alchol (not that I had them together!) and following a really healthly diet each day.

I wonder what apps are all using as some seem to run more than others on each week.

I've downloaded couch-to-5k by active.com on my iphone.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2012 13:25

Sorry x-posts mishtake, welcome!!

dotty2 and Stylelostinlabour I have an iPhone and have been using the NHS podcast with no problems. That says 3 times a week with at least one day rest between runs.

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 05/01/2012 14:02

I did week 1 run 3 this morning at 6.45am with the wind blowing stuff in my face and then the rain pissing down on me for the last 7 minutes (or so).....I'd say it wasn't my best run as I was feeling a bit grumpy! But I did feel brilliant when I realised I'd done it and so happy to be still keeping going - hurray Smile.

I might do run 3 again before I move on to week 2 as DH is one run behind me and it would give him a chance to keep up with me and we're thinking about trying to run together whenever we get the chance (anyone who knew us would probably suffer at least mild shock if they heard that as we've never been what you might call sporty, more sort of veg-like)

ScienceGeekMum · 05/01/2012 14:45

Welcome Mishtake and Dotty2 you bring our runner totals up to 90 (total thread numbers 93)!

I'll be running tonight about 8, cooking spaghetti Bol so will have to eat after, don't think running on a full stomach will be sensible! It will be w1d3 so afterwards will decide if I do a fourth w1 run.

I use the nhs podcast.

I've had a few friends offer to run with me but I've had to point out that I don't actually run at the moment Blush !

LookMaOneHand · 05/01/2012 14:46

Hello all, and well done to all you runners and walkers! Welcome mishtake and dotty2 - thanks for making me no-longer-the-newest-newbie to this thread :)

I'm just back at my desk at work (eating my healthy lunch of a tuna salad wrap) after finishing W1R2 at the gym across the street, on the treadmill.

After reading yesterday about everyone's outdoor exploits, I felt like I was cheating a bit so I added a level 2 incline to my workout today, which was challenging but felt good.

I must say that I'm glad that the treadmill does not have a 'high wind and rain' setting. I'm mightily impressed by everyone who motivated themselves to get out in the weather when it could have provided such a handy excuse.

MABS · 05/01/2012 14:47

well done all! i ran 3k on treadmill and did abs class this am, will do spin class tomorrow am....aarrrgghh!!
