January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Panadbois · 04/01/2012 20:19

oh Abbylou! Ouch!

I haven't been running again today, cos like MABS, I've been in hospital all day. They are keeping DS in for observation tonight (he's 13 so I didn't have to stay thankfully)

Still no poo, and in pain with a swelling down belowSad

Anyways, I'll check in with you lot again, but no point in making promises to run at the moment.

Keep it up girls, I'm with you in spirit!

OneLieIn · 04/01/2012 20:22

Done! Week 1 complete...bloody amazing Grin

openyerlugholes · 04/01/2012 20:26

Abbylou, it sounds like you have torn a tendon. That's exactly what I did a few months ago and it felt just like something hitting my calf (I was in a zumba class and actually turned round to see who was throwing balls!).

Ice and rest is the intial treatment. Gentle exercise from then on to stop it seizing up, but running will be out for a while.

Mine took about 6wks to heal I'm afraid.

debka · 04/01/2012 20:28

Finished week 1! Run 3 was noticeably easier- feeling a little more confident about week 2 now.

abbylou sorry to hear about your injury, that sucks :(

MABS and pan hope you can get on the road soon :)

thestringcheesemassacre · 04/01/2012 20:30

week 3, run 1 down. Not only that I managed to leave DH to cook dinner and put kidlets to bed. Win win.

well done onelie, keep it up.*
oh no abbylou, sounds v painful.

Need to get back to Weight Watchers next week, next port of call.

Good luck all

ScienceGeekMum · 04/01/2012 20:48

Welcome Kew and OneHand

Well done thestring, Debka, oneliein, OneHand, acanthus, and kandinsky on your runs today!

Abbylou, I tore a tendon in my calf playing netball a few years back, it's so painful Sad. You will need to take some time to recuperate but stay on the thread so that you stay motivated when you're better!

Pan hope your DS gets some relief soon...

MABS I hope the doctors come to a decision soon for your DS. Must have been a drag for you and Pan being in hospital all day. Cake is indeed necessary.

I didn't do my run today as the shopping arrived at the end of the delivery hour slot, which scuppered my plans. But will be doing w1r3 tomorrow. Means I've had two days of rest between these runs but that's ok right?

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2012 21:05

That sounds very painful AbbyLou, hope it heals quickly!

Fingers crossed for your ds panadbois

Sounds promising Debka :)

If its 3 runs a week ScienceGeekMum there must be a two day break at some point, so I think you're fine.

FreeButtonBee · 04/01/2012 21:19

Hi guys! Just to let you know that you are all so inspirational. I am not starting quite from couch levels of fitness but the thought of all you lot with your headphones in determinedly walking and running in the rain and wind this evening made me ashamed to be contemplating lying up in the sofa. I am not a very good runner but can run fairly non-stop. So 2.2 miles this evening DONE!

Keep up all the good work!! And thanks from a fellow slow plodder.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 04/01/2012 21:22

I was wondering how you got on today MABs.

Jogging lead is a curly stretchy one and its reflective. This one goes round the wrist but you can get waist ones so you are hands free.

cece · 04/01/2012 21:23

Just checking in.

Pathetically I have not started yet despite my new trainers sitting staring at me.

Been away for new year and now back at work. So not had time to find ipod and download the podcast...

My aim is to try and get organised to start next week.

Well done to everyone who has started though - very impressive.

OneLieIn · 04/01/2012 21:31

AbbyLou that happened to me last year. I bounded out of a client meeting happily, jumped down 2 steps in my flats and promptly collapsed as my calf gave way with a load pop. It hurt a lot!

I would recommend heat and arnica to help minimise the swelling. Take it easy, feet up Grin

OneLieIn · 04/01/2012 21:34

Well done freebuttonbee

cece honest it is quite good once you are out of the house. Come on, you can do it. Takes you two mins to load the app, 5 mins to get dressed and out you go. Come on cece, white trainers are sooooo last year Wink

feralgirl · 04/01/2012 21:50

C'moooon Cece. You can do it.

Ooh AbbyLou that sounds horrid, hope you can get going again soon.

I seem to have recovered from my third run this morning much quicker than I recovered from my second. I'm not nearly as achy as last time. Now I'm thinking about some sort of end goal; my best mate suggested Race For Life but has anyone else got any plans?

weblette · 04/01/2012 21:54

Well done folks for today - that first download is the hardest part!

Ouch Abby, lots of rest with that :(

Aiming for w1d2 tomorrow as long as Laura doesn't cut out halfway round on me again. Does the muzak get any better?

AbbyLou · 04/01/2012 22:08

Aw thanks guys, you're all very thoughtful. My calf is still very sore. I have kept it elevated all night but I keep getting pins and needles from sitting in the same position. My dad (a keen runner) suggested alternating ice/heat for 15 mins each. I did it for a while but the ice is really painful. It was causing me to get cramps in the affected calf and that was hell. I've stuck with the hot water bottle and dh found some deep heat in the cupbaord so I'm going to try that in bed.

RebeccaMumsnet · 04/01/2012 22:41

Oh no AbbyLou, hope you recover quickly but important not to push to hard. Get to the doctors if it still hurts in a couple of days?

Thinking of your DS Pan, hope you get some answers soon and MABS shhh, I won't tell if you don't Wink

I am due W1R3 tomorrow and i can't wait, struggling to fit it into my hectic day but think it will be 5.30ish after work and when DH gets home.

Back to London next week where I plan to run in my lunch break, need to find a nice route around the Towers.

Well done everyone, this is a fab thread. How many Jan C25K runners (we can call ourselves runners now, can't we?) are there now?

RebeccaMumsnet · 04/01/2012 22:43

Oh Wink seems to be broken? "Tech?"

ohbugrit · 04/01/2012 23:03

Thought you might like this quote. I do :)

?If you run, you are a runner. It doesn?t matter how fast or how far. It doesn?t matter if today is your first day or if you?ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.?

?John Bingham

Pan, MABS thinking of you guys. Take it easy Abby.

fatcaaah · 04/01/2012 23:18

I braved the elements for my w1 r3 and loved it! Found it easier than r2, I think I enjoy running in the rain.

Also had a couple of cars beep me, encouragingly, I wasn't running in their way or anything Grin, but that felt good and spurred me on.

Sorry to hear ds is still suffering pan Sad

abby that sounds nasty, hope you recover quickly

Nice quote ohbugrit thanks

Jnice · 05/01/2012 00:10

Well done everyone who braved the weather today. Is it still very stormy in the UK? I'm in Canada, west coast - same kind of climate as UK and today was windy. I finished wk1 pushing the buggy despite the wind blowing against us.

Abby - sounds like your Achilles Sad I had issues a few years back and one thing I learned was that wearing heels and running (not at the same time) do not go together because your muscles shorten and place more stress on your tendons. I gave up heels after my injury. I hope you heal soon.

Jnice · 05/01/2012 00:12

By the way - sorry for not bolding usernames - I can't figure out how to do that on the iPhone app. If anyone knows how please yell!

ScienceGeekMum · 05/01/2012 05:29

Rebecca I have just written down the names of everyone that's contributed to this thread and the results are in:

There are 91 different contributors from the beginning
Three are wellwishers not taking part
Of the remaining 88, 56 have posted on the thread since Monday

When I get some time I may even open a spreadsheet on this to do some proper analysis... (anyone thinking 'what a geek!'? Well, geek by nn...)

ScienceGeekMum · 05/01/2012 05:32

Jnice when you have the keyboard up, press on the .?123 symbol to get the number pad up. Then whilst on the number pad press the #+= sign on the bottom left to get to the symbol pad. The * is on the top row to the right which obviously you then use to do bold.

VelmaKelly · 05/01/2012 06:02

Did it! Week 3 run1. It's not my legs that give out its my lungs. Feeling quite pleased with myself!

Ishtar2410 · 05/01/2012 06:55

Week 3 run 3 completed yesterday evening. I found it quite challenging and wanted to stop halfway through, but I think this was probably due to an early start yesterday morning (DD back at school). Bit of tightness in my hamstring - reminded me that yes, I really do have to stretch out properly!

Can't wait to start week 4...depending on leg that will be tomorrow or Saturday.

Keep going guys!
