January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Well I've completed WK 1 run 3 today, so am not looking forward to Wk 2, hope I can step upto it!

yehudiwho · 03/01/2012 17:05

delilahbelle I too did the week 2 run one- just got back - was very impressed with myself for actually completing it - the runs seemed easier than I expected (although my expectations were that I would collapse and die) - Laura made me laugh trying to advise about breathing though- 4 beats in -4 beats out - I think I do 4 breaths per beat at the end of the 90 secs

decided to go in the evening during the week - never have been a morning person

ohbugrit · 03/01/2012 17:12

Week 5 is brutal really invigorating Grin

MABS · 03/01/2012 17:29

thanks Topsmart re ds hospital, they are doing tests to decide what surgery to do :(

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/01/2012 17:57

MABS Sad poor you and poor DS. Best wishes for tomorrow and i hope it all goes ok.

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 17:59

Well done Yehudi, Delilah, Lotsof and style on your runs today.

I've had a tough day of rest with lo on my own, getting cabin fever and wanting to get out on a run now!

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 18:01

MABS hope it goes well tomorrow

cinnamongreyhound · 03/01/2012 19:33

I've been out this evening!! And it was much easier than I thought, in that I completed each 60seconds and was recovered before the end of the 90seconds. The dog totally freaked out but I think a lot of that was because my usual walk with her wasn't long enough and she had no idea what I was doing. Can already feel aching in my triceps, goodbye bingo wings Wink. Feeling invigorated now but will see how I feel in the morning. Back to school run tomorrow and my baby will turn back into a monster from hell (he's in reception and always tired and grumpy :()

cinnamongreyhound · 03/01/2012 19:39

Also meant to say sciencegeekmum I have literally reduced my portion sizes (now eat same as my dss who's 10) and not buying the several bars of chocolate/bags of revels/boasters/brioche/chocolate muffins you get the picture! I have bought the pack of small cadbury bars and have 1 of those when I fancy something and hot chocolate which is 98 calories per drink and really helps a sweet tooth and fills me up. I was hungry all the time for first 3-4weeks but I'm in my 8th week and I'm hungry much less.

turningitaround · 03/01/2012 19:41

Wow, there are so many of us now. Ace.

I finally managed my first run. Almost made better by the howling wind and horizontal rain, cause I sort of felt a little like I was in a movie: survivior woman - just one girl, her tracksuit and an iphone in an epic battle against the elements etc. etc.

It was OK. Nothing aches yet.

cocoachannel · 03/01/2012 19:48

Hii everyone!

Finally managed my first run this evening. Thank goodness for you lot and supportive DH. Had a rough start back to work after DD was up three time overnight and one of my clients landed me with a crazy deadline at 8am! Anyway, was all set to postpone starting AGAIN when DH reminded me how well you were all doing!

I have a vey base fitness so started on week two and it was just right- challenging but achievable.

Will stick a gold star on my calendar and look forward to Thursday!

Well done everyone!

weblette · 03/01/2012 19:57

Ladies we are awesome!!!

Ok so what are your goals/rewards???

I want to do a 5k in April, once I get below ahem stone I'm getting my hair redone.

What about the rest of you???

AphraBehn · 03/01/2012 19:57

Well done everyone that ran today - rather you than me. I did go to the gym though and had a bit of a shock when I caught sight of myself in the mirror Shock. I think a new sports bra is definately in order. It's a sign of the times when the new Next Directory arrives and I go to the sportwear section first!

I think I have one of those arm thingies knokcing around for an ipod nano if anyone wants it. I have an itouch and I don't think it will fit.

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 03/01/2012 19:58

Good luck tomorrow MABS - hope they're able to give you and your DS some answers.

Also glad your DS is feeling better Pan.

Massive well done to everyone who went out today - it was almost like a monsoon at one point here. I was mainly glad it was a rest day but a small (well, quite small) part of me wanted to get out running. I think I'm scared I might chicken out and stop running and I don't want to lose momentum. I'm running again on Thursday morning all being well. I don't think it helped I went back to weight watchers and they've changed the system (which I'm skiving off from learning about now) and I weighed a big ole wodge more than I thought I was going to. The temptation is to hide in a big bar of chocolate but I won't.

Got to run and not eat complete shite is my (sort of) motto for the year.

cocoachannel · 03/01/2012 20:02

Just read back- pan sorry to hear about your DS

yehudiwho · 03/01/2012 20:10

I think we are all marvelous- and I have to thank geekmum as I dont think I would have continued without this thread. i woke up this morning and it was howling a gale and throwing it down and i had to go to work so snoozed the radio and went back to sleep- then felt really guilty all day so ran when I got home and felt (and feel) so much better - so thank you all

although weighed myself and have actually put on 3lbs [hmmm] this may be down to stuffing xmas chocs so may try this idiot proof diet too...

Stylelostinlabour · 03/01/2012 20:14

I'm back I did the second run in the gale force winds, which was great going as moved me along but coming back my face stung!

Also my worse nightmare happened...

I was happily at half way point turned round on the run bit and could see the local running club coming towards me, well my pride wouldn't let me stop running so I missed a walk bit and then another pack of bloody runners were coming up so again pride made me keep running and finally another load of them - asking if I wanted to join them! So I managed to cover wait for it 3 Miles tonight, so chuffed with self but I guess I'm going to pay for it tomorrow and now will have to hide from neighbour how saw me and said was I coming with them on Thursday...

Well Done everyone we are all doing GREAT!

cinnamongreyhound · 03/01/2012 20:15

Total respect to all of those who can live on a low carb diet!!! I'd rather eat a small amount of everything than go for low fat or no/low carbs. Luckily dh used to be a bodybuilder so has a good idea of what has what calories and so guides me. Hes now a power lifter and is constantly trying to gain weight and struggles to eat enough Envy

MABS · 03/01/2012 20:24

well done style! thanks for good wishes, ds has some disabilities so surgery is not very unusual sadly :(

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 03/01/2012 20:29

Oh bloody hell Style - impressed you didn't just dive into the nearest hedge!

Stylelostinlabour · 03/01/2012 20:30

MABS - thinking of you tomorrow and hope everything goes as well as it can

jchocchip · 03/01/2012 20:31

Managed to do week 2 run1! Walked to 'forest' so don't know what my stats were just for the run, but felt good. Couldn't do the breathe every 4 thing... Lovely warm day here - don't think I would have done it at home, dh says it was hail on and off all day!

Stylelostinlabour · 03/01/2012 20:34

I did think about dropping to the floor and tying my shoes laces but remembered I have those funky bands so would have looked even more stupid...

MetalSian · 03/01/2012 20:55

So I just did my first run.
Well partly run... I didn't realise my town was so hilly until I got alot further than I thought i was going to xD.

And I hate the wind. I need a hat, cold and wind makes my ears hurt and gives me a headache.
Thats my excuse for skipping the last run or two.
And now my head hurts, Sad, come on motivation come back ;P.

debka · 03/01/2012 21:08

style that's why I run at night, along deserted lanes Grin

Weigh in tonight and I lost seven pounds this week, must be something in this running lark!
