January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

OP posts:
debka · 03/01/2012 21:08

BTW am I the only one who tucks their ipod in their sports bra?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/01/2012 21:15

I carry loads of stuff in my bra.

Phone etc. Before I had my ipod I had (have) a personal dab radio and that always goes in my bra.

I am always foseking about in there for something or other Grin

Haziedoll · 03/01/2012 21:18

Just watching "the biggest loser" on itv1 and they are getting some very overweight people to run 5km with no previous training on their first day of the fitness programme!

Jnice · 03/01/2012 21:21

Hello - I am on wk 1 day 2 of the nhs regime - I live the podcast! I had my third son in October and have 20lb still to lose. Hoping to lose just 1-2lbs per week as I am breastfeeding and don't want I overdo it. I'm also using the myfitnesspal app to track calories.

I'm 40 in May do would live to start my next decade well with a good level of fitness Smile

ManyMomentsOfMadness · 03/01/2012 21:24

Well done to all who have started.

I can't start properly until the weekend :(
Until then I am jogging with the Wii, promise I am not sitting on the couch waving the remote Grin

kandinskysgirl · 03/01/2012 21:35

OMG how are the people on The Biggest Loser able to run 5K straight away??

fatcaaah · 03/01/2012 21:38

Well done everyone who ran in the hideous weather today, I had planned to have 2 rest days and run Wednesday when the majority of the dcs are back at school, was so glad I made that decision as there's no way I would hae wanted to run in that today!

Was planning to have a go on the wii tonight but dh is being a grumpy arse so am sitting here occasionally glaring at him instead,

pan glad ds is on the mend. Hope you see that poo soon!

MABS Good luck at hospital tomorrow

Style that really made me chuckle! But well done for keeping going, think I would have dived in a bush or something! Are your laces the sports ones with toggles? I've just bought some and lurve them, feel like a proper runner Grin

ohbugrit Don't scare us about week 5! There is still a chance I could quietly back out

Stylelostinlabour · 03/01/2012 21:45

Debka - way to go that's great weightloss!

I was running at night down a dark lane so shouldn't have seen anyone will now need to change route for Tuesday's and Thursdays although maybe I shouldnt as it's good motivation

Watching biggest losing - I don't think they actually ran/jogged 5km... But good on anyone that goes on a show like this as it must be great motivation to shift the weight

I'd be happy with a stone loss in a week!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/01/2012 22:06

The biggest loser has always alarmed me Shock
They get very overweight, unfit people to do circuit training and running and all kinds of stuff!
It cant be right, no wonder the participants are always getting injured. I think they do it for 'good telly'
cynical old me.

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 22:26

Ooo, lots happening tonight...

Well done Cinnamon, turning, cocoa, Yehudiwho, style (with extra running bits!), jchoc and metalsian (did I miss anyone?)

Will catch up more later but wanted to say how proud I am of us all!

thederkinsdame · 03/01/2012 22:28

panadbois glad your DS is one the mend.

Well done to everyone who ran today and welcome to anyone just starting out

NoseyNooNoo · 03/01/2012 23:14

So, planning to go on the 1st run tomorrow. MP3 has even been sent by Amazon - bought 1 week ago. DH has uploaded it and shown me how to work his MP3 with very poor grace.

let's hope this run can make me feel a bit cheerier tomorrow. It feels like various obstacles have tried to stop me doing this.

NoseyNooNoo · 03/01/2012 23:19

My thread made no sense. Mp3 not sent yet so having to use DH's. Seems like a big deal to him.Wish I hadn't asked.

ScienceGeekMum · 04/01/2012 00:00

Right, awake again briefly to catch up...

Welcome Jnice I think I have to welcome Manymoments and Nosey too but don't think you're new to the thread? Sorry, it's hard to keep track! Nosey I hope you get to run soon, never mind your DH!

Debka amazing weight loss, well done!

Fatcaah get yourself back here! Don't think I didn't notice you edging towards the door! When week 5 comes we'll do it together.

Yehudi, you're welcome

Metalsian would you like motivating or asswhooping? Come on, you did great getting out there today! Give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy a sense of smugness!

WRT Biggest Loser, I try not to watch those shows as in the past I've invariably gone "oh, look how horrendously obese those guys are, at least I'm not like that..." whilst reaching for the chocolate and slowing heading towards and attaining an obese bmi. I sometimes feel that news reports on obesity etc always show morbidly obese people, and the general public at large don't realise how clinical obesity can look 'normal'. I was Shock when I found out my bmi was at the top end of obese!

VelmaKelly · 04/01/2012 02:09

Gah! Tried to do w3d1 this morning. Not good. Mistakenly set the programme to wk 5 and wondered why the running seemed so long! Doh. Then found the tissue I had tucked

VelmaKelly · 04/01/2012 02:12

Damn posted too soon. What I meant to say was tissue in bra worked loose and started tickling my ear. Very unnerving. Found I couldn't complete the run sections. Very windy here ...... Will try again tomorrow figure I still got some exercise though Smile

bexsybooboo · 04/01/2012 07:11

Hey everyone just wanted to offer some encouragement.

You are all doing amazing and sounds like some are enjoying the running.

8 weeks ago weighing approx 14st 7ibs and only 5 ft 2 I started NHS couch 25k and thought I would collapse, well on Monday I done my first 5k I ran 3 miles 8 metres. Honestly if I can do this you guys can. Smile

Good luck and enjoy Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2012 07:22

Your dh is being silly Noseynoonoo! If he isn't bring supportive at least we are! Hope you get out today :)

I know what you mean sciencegeekmum, Friends have said to me that I'm obese, but my bmi is so guess they're wrong! Although only 3 more kg to lose and I'm official overweight, yay! The only thing that aches this morning are my triceps, I'm very surprised Grin

ScienceGeekMum · 04/01/2012 07:41

Velma, get you skipping ahead to 5 weeks! Wink

Bexsy always good to hear from you. 5k! How great is that?! I do feel that's a long way off at the moment so lovely to know it's possible!

Cinnamon do you mean your friends tell you you're obese? Shock Or did you miss out the 'not'?

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2012 08:19

Yes I missed the not scienceGeekMum!! They wouldn't be very good friends would they :)

openyerlugholes · 04/01/2012 09:21

Just done wk1 d2 run. In torrential rain. Was absolutely brilliant! Loved it!

Except my stoopid bb app decided to freeze halfway so had no idea when to run or walk. If it does it again no idea what I'm going to do. Need to look into downloading the app onto my shuffle again. Will find some techy head who can do it.

Feel fab!

100years · 04/01/2012 09:51

Plan on hold for a while. Lost my voice and feel a bit unwell. SadI'll go again when I am better Grin

NoseyNooNoo · 04/01/2012 09:51

Just finished my first run. Went pretty well. My left knee and hip were giving me a bit of grief but I told the pain to go away - and it did! My new shoes performed really well. No painful feet (which is unusual for me).

Got home to text from Dh asking how it went and then big congrats to from him.

Am quite chuffed.

feralgirl · 04/01/2012 10:19

W1D3: knees ouch, thighs ouch, left calf ouch, left hand where I caught it in a bramble ouch, right shoulder - weirdly - ouch.

I am now going on Sports Direct to find some decent socks as my heels are all rubbed again and also some trousers that don't fall down Blush

Bexsy THANK YOU for that, it has made me feel so much better as I am currently 5'2" and 14st 4lbs. It's really good to know that it can be done.

I spent the whole of today's run thinking that I might just pack in the diet and the exercise and buy some really expensive and flattering size 18 clothes that make me look thinner instead.

100 hope you feel better soon. Pan glad your DS is getting better.

Well done Nosey for your first run and also to all the rest of us. This is really helping!

ScienceGeekMum · 04/01/2012 10:32

Well done Nosey, open and feral!

Get well soon 100

Feral, I know what you mean about considering a new wardrobe. I have to keep reminding myself that this running malarkey is a new way of life, that it's about feeling good as well as looking good, and that if I don't start now then I may end up merging into the sofa!

Have to do w1d3 either today or tomorrow, I'm not aching as much as before, but am dreading it as I didn't do so well last time Sad
