January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

right Metalsian, time for some asswhooping...

As thestringcheese suggests, watch the video posted upthread. Also:

  1. think of how disappointed you will be with yourself to have given up at the first hurdle?
  2. look at thederkin and weblette who went out in today's weather - if they can do it in gale force winds, you can too!
  3. think how amazingly good you will feel to have completed your run.
  4. read Acanthus's post and what she can do now after starting c25k last year!

We're all rooting for you!

NewYeargeekmum · 03/01/2012 12:11

X posts Metalsian! Hope you're more motivated now anyway...

NewYeargeekmum · 03/01/2012 12:13

For routes, I used runkeeper as I was running (!) and checked the map every so often so I could estimate how much further I could run and what the best route would be.

NewYeargeekmum · 03/01/2012 12:14

Well done vajazzler!

parttimedomesticgoddess · 03/01/2012 12:30

So glad I posted my intentions on this thread, as I've just done my first session (in the gym as I much prefer running there to outside) - I really didn't feel like doing it and am quite sure that I would have found a good reason not to if I hadn't posted on here that I would Grin

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 12:33

Well done Parttime! Keep it up! And keep us posted on your next run plans so we can hassle you if you need it... Wink

weblette · 03/01/2012 12:42

Done Grin
Laura cut out on us half way round but we walked/ran for the rest of the time. Running in the rain was hilarious -dd landed in every puddle on the way Grin
Next run Thursday!
So best of luck to everyone else heading out, I'm off for a toasty hot shower now.

tipping · 03/01/2012 12:53

Hi all great to see you!
I'm trying CT5K for the third time (never went beyond week 5). Haven't run in 4 months. Hate exercise!!
Anyway I went for a run on sunday using week 2 and am now dreading tomorrow as will have to run in the dark at 7am! (I work fulltime and have to go before work).
DREADING IT!

debka · 03/01/2012 12:57

metalsian I live in the middle of nowhere with a limited choice of lanes, I just run until she says half way, go a bit further, then turn round. I do the bit further because I've found that a slightly longer cool down helps the aching the next day, so I walk gently for about 5 mins till I'm home.

Huge well done to all those out in the rain and wind today. I'm out again tomorrow night, and hoping to swim in the morning too, may be a mistake....

debka · 03/01/2012 12:58

tipping I run in the dark after the DDs are in bed and it suits me as no-one can see me!

parttimedomesticgoddess · 03/01/2012 13:08

Next run will be Thursday Science - will report in afterwards Smile

kandinskysgirl · 03/01/2012 13:56

MetalSian I run around a park which is luckily just outside my house. However when I did my run yesterday I finished ages away so my cool down was more like a fifteen minute walk.

I am going to try and be organised so that I end up back at my front door..I was shattered doing the walk back yesterday.

ln1981 · 03/01/2012 14:03

just checking in as this seems to be going at a fair pace!!

welld one/good luck to all those who are daring to venture out today-am glad I braved the dark and rain last night as there seems to be roads closed all over the place here thanks to the weather. dp went down into town today to get the Angry Birds game for the kids and he said the town was empty bar a few brave souls!!

Panadbois · 03/01/2012 14:55

Thank you all for your concern. He's much better today, but we're waiting for poo that missing for weeks Confused

A big high five to all have braved the dreadful weather today. If I'm not back here tomorrow saying I'm going for my 3rd run, please can someone come over and drag me out?

I feel like I've had a lot of excersice today just by taking decorations down, cleaning and washing. Having a panad now Brew

MABS · 03/01/2012 15:32

glad he brighter Pan :)

Ran 3k on treadmill as my first run and did half hour spin class. Tomorrow i will have to miss as DS at Guys Hospital for 5 hrs..deep joy.

ohbugrit · 03/01/2012 15:40

Pleased to hear he's on the mend Pan :)

Hope nobody minds me tagging along here but my November crew has been decimated by Christmas :(. Posting and reading about the progress of others is so motivating and encouraging. I am on week 5 but for various reasons it's taken me 7 or 8 weeks to get this far so you will probably all catch me up by the end!

Well done all of you though. If you can run in the dark cold wet of January you can run anytime :)

MetalSian · 03/01/2012 15:50

Great news your son is feeling better Pan.
I have just spent about two hours creating my own mp3 playlist... [yawn]

topsmart · 03/01/2012 15:53

Oh god.
I cannot believe I'm doing this, but can I join in?

Someone earlier mentioned those blubbery people in WallE; that's exactly what I've become.

I'm going to combine the c25k with the Idiot Proof (lowcarb) Diet. When my DD turned 2 (three years ago) I did the diet on its own and lost nearly two stone and felt fantastic.
Recurrent miscarriage and a major house move have led to it all coming back, and then some.

I NEED to be fitter, to fit back into my old clothes and to think about something other than babies.

I've just spent all day reading this thread and shopping online for: trainers, sports bra, arm thingy for iphone.
This means I actually have to do it, doesn't it.

Thank you so much NewYearGeekMum for setting this up, it's totally motivating. Makes me really want to like running!

ps. The last time I tried jogging (about 10 years ago) I got cramp in my bum. What do you stretch for cramp in your bum?! Confused

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 15:56

Welcome Tipping and ohbugrit How's week 5 going Ohbugrit? Does it get any easier?!

Well done MABS and weblette on your runs today!

Pleased to hear your DS is getting better Pan. Hope you get to do your run tomorrow and that you find that poo!

MABS 5 hours in hospital... Poor you! Sad Hope it goes ok.

topsmart · 03/01/2012 15:56

pps I've typed that really longwinded message from my bed, eating biscuits Grin

topsmart · 03/01/2012 15:58

ppps Am completely in awe of all of you who've already started and ACTUALLY been for RUNs. Amazeballs!

ScienceGeekMum · 03/01/2012 16:00

Welcome Topsmart

I think lunges are quite good for bum cramps!

I have also just given in and eaten some Thai spiced nuts... I just get so hungry in the mid afternoon! Somebody needs to give me more motivation on the diet front... How do you do the idiot proof diet?

topsmart · 03/01/2012 16:07

thanks sciencegeekmum, I'll try that!

It's india knight's diet - there's a book and accompanying recipe book. You spend a few weeks really cutting out all carbs (meat, nuts, cheese, green leafy veg are your friends) AND caffeine (aaaaggh), then gradually introduce low GI carbs (oats, berries). It really worked for me as I love the foods you're allowed to eat. Once I was over the initial few weeks it really didn't feel like a diet. But I wasn't so good at making responsible choices in the long term... and I didn't quite get round to the 'exercise' part of it... 2012 will be different!

So your nuts would fit in perfectly!

Stylelostinlabour · 03/01/2012 16:48

Hello All

Well I'm going to brave the elements and go for my second run/shuffle/walk this evening.

Last night I had such bad thigh cramps but think that was due to doing shred rather than running so will see how I can get on tonight. New running top and high vis bands arrived today along with fetching high vis hat/wind keeper outie thingy - so attractive!

Will report back after I have completed

Well done all who have braved the wind and rain today and get a move on those who are still thinking about starting...

delilahbelle · 03/01/2012 16:59

Hi all

Today I managed the first run of week 2 - seemed a lot harder thank week 1. Nice trainers arrived but were delivered to my neighbours - will be wearing them for my next run on Thursday. I went out at 4, managed to get home before it got too dark, I'm working later on Thursday though, so won't manage to start my run until 5pm. I am a bit scared of the dark!

Have rewarded myself with one of the mini bars of chocolate from my Green and Blacks tasting collection (Xmas present) With 24 bars, that's one after each run :)
