January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Welcome Fizzy and HappyNewRia

Well done 1981, ThePanthan, Fizzy and Debka on your runs yesterday.

Pan so sorry to read about your DS, it must have been so worrying. I hope the infection clears up quickly.

100 I hope you don't have any further problems. Take it easy when running - better to do a little exercise than exacerbate an injury/ condition and end up doing no exercise.

Fatcaah thanks for your advice on the shin pain. As I'm wearing brand new running shoes I'm reluctant to try different shoes so will see how it goes. To be fair I think I had similar when I started netball a few years back, it went after a few sessions.

Rebecca I am politely ignoring your sit up suggestion. Wink

Hazie in the words of Monty Python, GET ON WITH IT!!! Your task for today is to look for shoes and bra and arse-kicking is coming your way otherwise Angry

HappyNewRia hopefully this thread will keep you going. I think about posting on here about my runs and it has helped to motivate me. Arsekicking from us is optional, we can just provide the basic level of support and encouragement if you wish!

OddBoots · 03/01/2012 06:53

NewYeargeekmum Thank you. I'm hoping I can get at least some of the benefit indoors, I can certainly feel the ache today. I can't see me getting beyond power walking but then I couldn't see myself even walking again a few year ago.

Panadbois How scary for you, I hope your ds soon feels better.

Well done ln1981!

Cheers of support for anyone on a running day today.

Vajazzler · 03/01/2012 07:14

Morning all! I cant believe how many people are involved in this thread now! Its fantastic to see so much enthusiasm Smile
My children are back at school today so will go for my run without lots of little people asking what im doing/where im going. However it is very windy here and been raining all night, so im hoping for extra points for week1 run2.
Good luck to anyone running today x

aliciaflorrick · 03/01/2012 08:14

I couldn't do it this morning, the weather was just too bad I could barely stand upright in the wind and rain so I've had to give it a miss, I'm gutted actually. To make up for it I did take the dog for a quick walk and made us walk quite rapidly up a big hill but then slipped on the way back down so now probably have a big black bruise on my bum.

I've checked the weather forecast and tomorrow is meant to be much better - I've also got an hour to kill in the morning where I usually go and grab a hot chocolate and read a book so I'll just do my first run [fingers crossed].

openyerlugholes · 03/01/2012 08:42

Waah gale force winds amd lashing rain. That puts paid to my run this morning Sad

Hopefully will improve this afternoon or will have to leave it until tomorrow which is a pain.

thederkinsdame · 03/01/2012 08:47

It's bucketing down here and I have the headache from hell. I might still go though Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 03/01/2012 09:18

Hope DS is ok Pan?

Have just got back from wk1 run2. My face is red raw, it's soooo winding and wet. I may have to get DH to take a pic of me for my profile, I truly look ridiculous.

BUT I am very pleased with myself and can't wait for run 3...

Good luck all and keep going, as Laura would say "you're doing great'

MABS · 03/01/2012 09:21

we have gale force winds too, hideeous. would it be ok if i drove to gym and did spin class and run on treadmill? pllleeeassee!

HalleLoujaandhappynewyear · 03/01/2012 09:25

It is hideous there is no way I would run today outside. So there.

RebeccaMumsnet · 03/01/2012 09:27

Yes MABS, you may. Grin

MABS · 03/01/2012 09:30

good enough for me Rebecca ;-) Thanking you

Aseaandthreestars · 03/01/2012 09:34

Well done to everyone who is getting their runs done! And thanks to GeekMum for being on our case and issuing necessary bum-kicking.

For the plantar fasciitis sufferers - the best thing I know of is to ice the underside of the foot and stretch the foot by pulling the toes back towards the shin. One good way to ice it is to keep a small water bottle, just over half full of water, in the freezer, then you can roll it around under the foot.

Hmm....maybe a lifetime of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is finally coming in useful. Keep naming the injuries, I've probably had it at some point Grin

NewYeargeekmum · 03/01/2012 09:39

Crikey Rebecca, can't believe you did a run in this weather! Are you mad insane somewhere where it's not blowing a force 10?

100years · 03/01/2012 09:40

Bleurgh. Feel and sound like a chesty cold is heading my way. I'd run if it wasn't feeling like it's going to my chest. Rest today and see how I feel tomorrow.

100years · 03/01/2012 09:54

Cheers MrsDeVere, had a read and I hope at some point things are all resolved and it's destroyed by a freak UFO landing on it without harming the residents.

RebeccaMumsnet · 03/01/2012 10:02

I am a little insane, it is blowing a gale here.

MetalSian · 03/01/2012 10:09

I am going to get a bum kicking... but my things haven't arrived yet and I found myself wondering this morning if I should just send them back and get a quick refund.
Hmm

Kick me please?
My motivation certainly hasn't lasted long.

NoseyNooNoo · 03/01/2012 10:20

My MP3 player hasn't arrived yet but the children are back at school tomorrow so I'm going to upload the podcast to DH's MP3 tonight. I will drop the children off at school in my running gear and then I'm off for a wheeze and a cough my first run.

thestringcheesemassacre · 03/01/2012 10:20

Metal, watch the link in the thread. I think Rebecca mumsnet posted it. If he can do it, anyone can. Man up woman! (tough love etc)

thederkinsdame · 03/01/2012 10:39

week 1 run 3 done. I must be mad! Could hardly see where I was going, the rain was streaming in my eyes and the wind was taking my breath away, but I feel great now I've had a hot shower!

Panadbois hope your DS is better soon and that you are over the shock of it. It's horrible when LOs are taken to hospital. ((hug)) Apologies for not mentioning in earlier post - had not read recent posts before my last update.

Acanthus · 03/01/2012 10:41

Hi all.

I did c25k last June and can now do about 8k in something under an hour. I am not overweight bu I have never been a runner and this is miraculous to me. I go 2 or 3 times a week and feel great for it.

One thing that really helped me has been doing some of the runs with a friend - when you are going for over 30 mins it is nice to chat! But you need to get your friend to start around the same time as you, so you are at approximately the same stage.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/01/2012 11:06

Pandabois I am sorry about your DS Sad
Wishing him well really quickly.

weblette · 03/01/2012 11:45

Poor ds Pan Sad
It's lashing down here but I'm about to go out with dd to do w1 r1, yes we are mad but will certainly have a giggle!
We may have to compare pictures!
Good luck everyone else braving the elements!

Vajazzler · 03/01/2012 12:03

pandabois hope your ds is better soon

Went for my second run this morning. Was very wet and windy but i managed to cover more ground than last time which i was surprised about. Feel like im achieving something already.
Well done to all running in this weather Smile

MetalSian · 03/01/2012 12:08

Pan I agree with everyone else. Hope your DS has a speedy recovery!

My things just came. And they all fit.
So I need to download the podcast and pop it on my ipod and I should will be ready to go.

I hope this weather is better by 6pm.
Have to wait til the DP is home from work to keep an eye on DS.

This may sound stupid but where do you lot run?
I don't know whether to just run until I get halfway then turn around again xD.
