January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Aching shins - I do a stretch where I stand with my toes on a yoga block and stretch my heel to the floor. You could use a book if no yoga block, but they're made of sponge and have a bit of give. Then do some stretches where you lift up on your toes. That might help a bit.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 18:15

Well done oddboots and Abby. Oddboots you are not a fraud - I think it's excellent that you're having a go despite your problem, it must be hard to exercise otherwise so stick on some good music and keep going Grin

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 18:16

Well done Arabella as well!

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 18:17

Thanks asea, I'll give that a go with some books.

Aseaandthreestars · 02/01/2012 19:22

I just measured the block. It's only two inches high. I don't want anyone falling off books. Have a quick google for running stretches - stretching really is the key here. Hope they get better quickly.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 19:41

Thanks asea. I didn't push it too far today because they hurt, but was rather disappointed that I covered less ground today at a slower pace. Sad

However not so bad that I can't go out on the third run of the week on Wednesday! BRING IT ON!!! Grin

debka · 02/01/2012 19:45

Evening all- just got in from Week One, Run Two! Was beautiful out, clear skies and stars. I enjoyed it. Not sure how I'll manage next week though, the running bits were hard work.

Well done everyone else who got out today.

It's weigh day tomorrow and I'm very interested to find out if my two runs will have made a difference to my weight loss.

Fizzylemonade · 02/01/2012 20:08

Anyone got advice on how to calm down the bright purple face I seemed to have acquired after I did the first run? Grin

I am doing mine on my elliptical trainer as it is too hilly round here to be able to run without dying.

This thread inspired me to do it so thank you to everyone Thanks

yehudiwho · 02/01/2012 20:36

fizzy lemonade- I too am a victim of red face and think you can only overcome it with a balaclava

I have to do week TWO run one tomorrow- and its first day back at work - I cannot see how I will manage 90 secs of running - if you are worried about red face wait til tomorrow - it'll be on the news

MABS · 02/01/2012 21:00

well done MrsDV - how do you feel? i doing it tomorrow am, how far should i go?

OneLieIn · 02/01/2012 21:10

Omg, my legs are killing me. Sad

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 21:13

I feel ok thanks. I dont have the best joints in the world so I have taken a couple of anti inflams as a precaution. I dont want to be put off by aches and pains!

I dont know how far I have run - I was thinking that tonight - how do you know unless you have an app on your ipod? We all run and walk at different rates dont we?

I think the best thing is too just get out and there and DO IT (copyright protected Grin )

Lets not be put off by not doing enough or looking silly or anything - lets just do something. Its got to be better than nothing right?
Hurrah for everyone on our thread!!!

fatcaaah · 02/01/2012 21:58

Well done everyone who has run today!! I'm on a rest day and don't ache like I did after the first run.

rebecca Sit ups on a rest day? Are you mad woman?! Are you trying to give the rest of us a bad name? I'm just pleased i'm bloody getting off my arse. Just shush with your helpful ideas.

Well done mrsdv Smile I was wondering about the distance thing too, I only have a cheapo mp3 player, I guess I could find an app for my phone but don't really want to take it out with me, I drop it several times a day anyway, it is a recipe for disaster taking it running. And where would i put it? 'Tis a hefty thing.

Newyeargeekmum I used to always have the shin pain (not that I was a massive runner but any time i did run, i had it). It was often less painful on a running machine so i assumed it was a pressure thing. I assume there is more 'give' on a running machine (but that may be bollocks). But i have some of those tone-up trainers now, haven't had a single twinge in my shin running in them. They are supposed to be good for posture and therefore the 'right' muscles are used when walking and running. They are so comfy too. Dh has plantar fascitis (?sp) (heel spur) and they're meant to help that too as they take pressure off the heel. I've ordered him some as he can hardly walk most days and has to use a stick a lot of the time. Fingers crossed for him!

Mine were only £12 too from sports direct!

100years · 02/01/2012 22:03

Oh well

Didn't get out and do run 2 today, have been having a few more wakeful nights from DD and so I was shattered this morning, so when OH got up I went back to bed for 2 hours, then I had severe CBA (can't be arsed) and would have felt a little guilty for going out straight after having had a 2 hour sleep and leaving OH again with DD - not that he would have minded. Then the do it this afternoon plan didn't work out as a friend came over and I made banana muffins in the time between knowing she was coming and her arriving so I couldn't really go then. Erm. I'm going to try and do it tomorrow, OH is back at work, and the Ocado is due around his home time, but I'm going to try and get out.

MrsDeVere, I remember reading a thread about a 'gym' being built in the back garden of your neighbour's, how are things going now? I couldn't remember what the thread was called to go and look for it. You can of course point me in that direction if you want to.

100years · 02/01/2012 22:06

Fatcaaah, plantar fasciitis is why I had to stop running in 2010 (I nearly said last year) and I'm hoping that 12 months off (pre and during pregnancy) and starting out slowly means I don't' get it again. But it is horrible. I've also had shin splints in the past. I'm buggered up really.

Panadbois · 02/01/2012 22:09

Thanks for the advice Newyear - I realised my mistake straight after posting [duh!]

Thanks also about the advice on the shoulder pain.

I haven't been here today (did you miss me?). DS was rushed to hospital with suspected appenicitus, and we've been with him all day. Turns out it's a nasty infection, and we've been sent home with meds. Sad and [worried sick]

So, don't know if I'll go tomorrow, depends how he is. DH is home too so we might go seperately.

I'll keep reading all your achievements though.

fatcaaah · 02/01/2012 22:18

100years - did it just go with rest? Dh has been told to rest it. He has managed to change some of his day but is on his feet most of the day.

He has been told about an operation and has been referred to a specialist now so we'll see what they say.

tribpot · 02/01/2012 22:20

Panadbois, what a shock for you - :( :( You must have had a hell of a day, hope you manage to get some sleep and DS is soon on the mend.

100years · 02/01/2012 22:24

Pan, sorry to hear about your DS, glad it's not appendicitis, but still not nice.

fatcaah, rest is really what is needed, unfortunate if your job is on your feet all day, it's often referred to as policeman's heel. Anyway, I'm not sure if it's gone for me, so far it's a tiny bit noticeable, but I don't know if that's starting up again and normal aches for me, or if it's still bad. I will know once I've done a few runs, if it gets worse then it's stop running again for me. If not then I keep going and hope it doesn't come back. There are many options, an injection of steroids is often given, there is an op, if it's due or causing a heel spur - but not all are related to heel spurs. Hope his is better with whatever treatment he has. You can also get night splints to wear. Rolling your heel on a golf ball is also supposed to help (I've done this too!)

happynewRia · 02/01/2012 22:28

hi there, may I join the thread please? Have started C25k twice and never got further than the second runBlush. Have technical difficulties with my MP3. Will try to download again and start this weekHmm Have not managed to read the whole thread.

Haziedoll · 02/01/2012 22:49

I hope ds feels better soon Pandebois. What a worry for you. Sad

Haziedoll · 02/01/2012 22:51

Welcome HappyNewRia. You will get further than run2 this time!

I still haven't started yet. Still need to order trainers and sports bra...

ThePathanKhansWitch · 02/01/2012 22:53

I did mine today! Can't believe i did it, achey shins at the moment, hope that evens out.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 23:19

100years there is a thread in AIBU about Christmas Thread Updates. I have given an update on there as I had to delete my epic threads.

Its not very interesting I am afraid Smile

ln1981 · 03/01/2012 00:09
