January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Finished the first run, it was actually much harder than I thought, am dubious I will be moving up in a week. However I did run at all the run times which I was pleased with.

I have had to use industrial strength moisturiser now...it sure is windy in London today!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 14:46

Flippin eck even MNHQ are on me case now.

I had better do that run later Shock

aliciaflorrick · 02/01/2012 15:18

All you who have already run, you have my respect, even those of you who have done it in the rain.

I'm motivating myself for a run after the school run tomorrow morning, trainers are ready, crappy old tracky bottoms are ready, downloading map my run now and have relevant downloads on Ipod.

Please don't let it rain, please don't let me make a tit of myself and please nobody laugh at me.

Woodlands · 02/01/2012 15:30

I did it! Just went round and round the park, was on my own this time, I think it will be harder with the pushchair once DH is back at work. I was surprised at how hard I found it, I didn't realise I was that unfit! I got such a stitch, it was pretty painful for a while.

Off you go Mrs DV! If you're going to L. Park to run it is very muddy, but it feels nice to run amongst green and trees.

feralgirl · 02/01/2012 15:32

Just done second run. OMG I hate it so so much while I'm doing it but I feel ace now. I might need to revise my route though as I was ankle deep in mud at some points and my lovely new trainers are revolting now!

Pan does jelly fluff work with low fat jelly? I think it sounds brilliant and DS would find it hysterical!

I need to think of some little rewards to give myself, I'm not sure my mat pay will stretch to facials but mine and DH's big reward at the end is to go to Fifteen for a slap up meal!

Well done to all of us for braving the elements. Smile

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 15:39

Woodlands - well done! I got a stitch too, anyone got any tips on preventing this?

feralgirl · 02/01/2012 15:40

And Pan, thanks for that link, very inspiring, plus that guy is hot.

Maybe DH will look like that if he actually keeps his resolution to join me!

feralgirl · 02/01/2012 15:41

I got stitch the first time but not this time. I focused more on my breathing and on pacing myself which I think helped.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 15:41

Feral, I'm with you on the hate! But I'm hoping the more I do it the more I'll like it Hmm Well done on your second run, I definitely found it harder.

MABS · 02/01/2012 15:45

Right then , I will be doing it at 8.30 tomorrow and will report after. How long should the first run be?

Aseaandthreestars · 02/01/2012 15:47

Understand the hate. When I'm running I want to be walking, but as soon as I start walking I want to take off and run again.

Is MrsDeVere warming up?

bexsybooboo · 02/01/2012 16:05

Tip for stitch - drink plenty of water before your run and try not to run too soon after eating. Smile

I got stitch on week 5 and it made me feel ill so painful, so I make sure I drink plenty throughout morning and run 2- 3 hours after eating has worked for me so far Smile

Keep running and enjoy Smile

HalleLoujaandhappynewyear · 02/01/2012 17:06

Week 1 day 3 now complete. I think I might have got the bug again.

Need to buy another sports bra am 34GG - not sure where to get one cheap. All ones in my size seem to be excluded from sale!

HalleLoujaandhappynewyear · 02/01/2012 17:08

PS I even ran a small amount uphill and it wasn't too bad.

I might sign myself up for a 5k run in March so have something to aim for.

OneLieIn · 02/01/2012 17:30

That's a great idea halle, march and being able to run 5k seem a long way away.....

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 17:31

I DID IT! It was ok but I was a bit bleugh when I realised I had TWO more runs to do when I thought I only had one.

I think I should buy Atticus a hi vis doggie jacket he is only little (well he is very fat but short) and I worry he might trip someone up in the dark.

I am hoping to use the nursery run for my runs because its in a nice park and its a brisk five minute walk (without DC) there.

Get on with it the rest of you! Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 02/01/2012 17:32

Whoop!

Well done Mrs DV

Xmas Wink Xmas Grin

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 17:40

Hurrah for MrsDV!

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 17:42

Thanks Bexsy for the tip on stitches. Will try to hydrate more!

weblette · 02/01/2012 17:43

Nice one MrsDV! Xmas Grin

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 17:44

Anyone got any more tips to help my poor aching shins? It really was the main issue when running today.

weblette · 02/01/2012 17:48

I'll ask my chum who's a personal trainer.

arabellacaterpillar · 02/01/2012 17:48

Well I did it...1st run today, and was going well until the iPod battery died...ggrrrr. I think my battery is wrecked as it said fully charged in no time at all when i put it onto charge, anyone else had this problem??

Anyway I continued and just counted the 60sec and 90 seconds, not ideal but better than not doing it I guess!!!

OddBoots · 02/01/2012 18:07

I started this today but you might think me a fraud. I did it on the indoors (partly on the spot, partly moving around), I know that isn't in the spirit of the thing but I have a spinal cord problem and if I do too much my legs just stop responding, I don't want to risk that out and about yet.

AbbyLou · 02/01/2012 18:08

Well done you, I did my first one today as well. The first running section was awful but it got better and I quite enjoyed it once I realised it wasn't going to kill me!! I feel very proud of myself for doing it and am determined to carry on. I can feel my calves tightening already and I think they are going to seriously hurt tomorrow.
