January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

every* (Note to self, preview before posting).

Ah Style I was in agony for over a week with the Shred.
But it really does work!
I felt a difference after doing it for two weeks.

ProfessorSunny · 02/01/2012 10:25

I really want to join you as well, I had abdominal surgery 2 weeks ago though so I can't yet - a friend of mine does a lot of running and had the same surgery 2 weeks before me and she still hasn't been able to to start jogging again yet :(

Aseaandthreestars · 02/01/2012 10:35

Week 1 Day 2 is done! I really enjoyed it and my old shin splints problem seems to be under control.

DH came with me - he is happier doing 10k, but wanted to potter around the park with me. He did a little air fist-bump "to everyone that's getting started" Grin

I got a lot of shoulder pain when I first started - agree with Style - it was due to muscles that hadn't been used properly having to hold my arms up (see upthread re nice toned arms, it's worth sticking with it).

Work is going to get in the way, so day 3 will be Thursday or Friday. Must keep going...

Stylelostinlabour · 02/01/2012 10:37

That's good to hear metal - will do it again tonight and then run tomorrow night for week 1 day 2 - feeling super motivated with diet, no drinking and even taking care of body with nice products I got for Christmas.

One thing I noticed last time I was running many moons ago was that I needed a good moisturiser with a high SPF on even in January otherwise I ended up with old lady leather skin face.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 10:43

I am going to have to go out this evening as mum is coming round today and I got up late (I am always like this in the Christmas hols Blush )

So I will need a kick up the bum later.

I dont want to leave another day between day 1 & 2.

I am relying on you lot to be mean to me!

Aseaandthreestars · 02/01/2012 10:45

What time are you going running MrsDV? Plan it now and we'll be here to check/do some bum-kicking.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 10:51

Poo still waiting on DH to finish his accounts before I can dress and go. He is so slow in the mornings Angry

I was sooo up for getting out early today Sad

MrsDV you have to get out today or you WILL be queen of wussness as said yesterday. Just think of the sense of achievement you'll get afterwards!

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 10:52

Well done Aphra and Thesea

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 10:54

ProfSunny feel free to lurk and post until you're able to run!

tribpot · 02/01/2012 10:59

ManyMomentsOfMadness - Wii counts as long as you don't do what my ds does, which is sit on the sofa waggling the Wiimote to make his Mii fall over because he likes the noise it makes Hmm

ProfessorSunny, keep posting - I suspect I will be on week 1 for some time to come so you should still have company when you are able to go out. Are you allowed to go walking? Abdominal surgery must be very limiting :(

AphraBehn - well done! Better to break the knees in gently than to go too fast and end up out injured.

openyerlugholes · 02/01/2012 11:33
OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/01/2012 11:50

Ummm
Mum is going about half past 3 so maybe 4pm? Then I can have a shower before doing dinner.

Oooer

Dillinger · 02/01/2012 11:54

I really wanted to go out on the 1st and keep going from there but I seem to have twisted my back somehow, it hurts if I move my right arm and turn my neck to the right also Sad So Im feeling pretty gutted, was hoping Id be better in time but will have to wait now Angry

Well done to all those that have been out Smile

weblette · 02/01/2012 11:57

Room for another? :) Plan on starting this tomorrow - need to get some running trousers, my trackies are all too long, but REALLY want to give it a go.

My ultimate aim is to run the London marathon in 2013 when I turn 40 so starting now would give a good slow build up.

Well done to everyone who's already started. I noticed that there are some really good Shock Absorber bras reduced here

Aseaandthreestars · 02/01/2012 12:16

4pm is a good time to run. Imagine how lovely you'll feel when you settle down to dinner, having had run and nice warm shower.

A marathon? That;s a lot of running.

ln1981 · 02/01/2012 12:24

mrsdv im having to go out this evening too.

had planned to go this morning but i slept in, and Im going to a football match this afternoon.

Am looking forward to it, however i live halfway up a hill so have been racking my brains to try and work out a route that means the uphill runs are at the start and i can freewheel as it where back to the house!

OneLieIn · 02/01/2012 12:31

Done! Even though I didn't want to. It's not so bad once out of bed and out of the house.

I was snotty, eyes watery all the way round. The first four runs were majorly hard and then I realised they were into the sun and the wind. I turned around and the last 4 were fabulous, wind behind me, sun behind me. although I could see my fat wobbling in my shadow Blush

Well down to everyone who has done it. And honestly I am a lazy arse, so of I can, you can.

kandinskysgirl · 02/01/2012 12:51

Hi all, just waiting for the ipod to charge, then I'm off. Luckily the sun has come out and my shift was cancelled at work so absolutely no excuses at all not to go.

Slightly nervous about collapsing and dying in the park...but also a little bit excited that I am actually going to do something!

thestringcheesemassacre · 02/01/2012 13:35

Come on Mrs DV, let's see some HUSTLE.
(too much?)

Did run 3 week 2 today. Puffed like a loon at the end. I really try for the last run, and it makes me realise how slow my shuffle is. Each run though I can't help thinking how log like my legs feel. I never think I'll make it, but you can.

Good luck to all the new runners.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 14:03

Welcome Weblette

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 14:12

Did my second run. Unfortunately my shins were quite tight at the front, has anyone got any tips on how to help this? Because of the muscle tightness I didn't do as many of the runs but still completed the 30 minutes walking fast. Smile

ProfessorSunny · 02/01/2012 14:21

Thanks NewYear, I will stick around. I've been doing lots of walking (20-40 minutes a day) as I haven't been able to drive but running is not an option yet, sadly.

ProfessorSunny · 02/01/2012 14:22

tribpot, yes, it's been very limiting, it's been 2 weeks now and just the 20 minute walk to the shops makes it sore. Things are getting back to normal slowly though, I am hoping to be told I can drive again tomorrow, they said no on Friday when I asked :(
I have been doing a lot of walking, probably too much but without the car there isn't much choice!
I used to do running once a week before all this so I am so keen to get back to it.

RebeccaMumsnet · 02/01/2012 14:23

Mrs DV, totally agree with thestringcheesemassacre
