January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

OP posts:
FatimaLovesBread · 01/01/2012 21:58

Oooh just realised I still need a sports bra. Been doing boxercise wearing a normal bra plus two tight tops but that wont work for running.
What do you all recommend? Need one in a 32/34E

ManyMomentsOfMadness · 01/01/2012 23:07

I didn't manage to start it today :-(
I did do a bit of running on Wii Fit tonight though, is this an ok substitute??

thederkinsdame · 01/01/2012 23:57

Can thoroughly recommend the shock absorber. No black eyes yet! Well done everyone who has run today and good luck for those enturing out tomorrow!

I do like the idea of rewards, although my run today has been cancelled out somewhat by the enormous amount of junk food I've consumed since but I think a star chart will keep me motivated!

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 02/01/2012 01:56

Well done everyone who's started! I really wanted to make Jan the 1st my first day of the c25k AND my diet but I'm still with my family so thats buggered. I'll have to get my backside in gear when I go home! I still need to sort a new sports bra, will have to try M+S again and hope for the best as thats the only place on the highstreet that goes up to 40F/G! I need to try it on so can't really order.... oh dear, more excuses. Hopefully this time next week I'll be dead impressed with myself for doing at least 1 run!

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 02:37

Bish well done on your first run!

Many I'm sure that as long as you got your heart rate up the wii fit counts! but you don't get as many smugness points as those who go out in the rain

Fatima and Scarf I echo Thederkin and second the shock absorber, mine's great. I usually wear a 40DD but when I had this fitted actually got a 38DD. You are meant to be able to fit two fingers under the strap all round. You should be able to breathe comfortably but it should also feel supportive. Make sure you jiggle when trying one on!

parttimedomesticgoddess · 02/01/2012 08:03

Is there still time to jump on? I'm massively unfit, although I did have 4 or 5 months of swimming/using the gym a lot earlier this year I fell out of the habit and am determined to get back into it. Should be able to exercise tomorrow when the girls are back at school, just need to download the podcast I think...

Vajazzler · 02/01/2012 08:41

Ouch ouch ouch! I've woken up today so pleased its a rest day. The muscles at the top of my stomach and my sides ache so much!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/01/2012 08:57

I haven't started yet, this is my last day off work and I'm going to relax! Tomorrow will be my evening for running, dh keeps laughing at the thought me dragging our dog around with me, poor thing! Well done to everyone who's started and with illness and terrible weather too. You lot certainly know how to post, everytime I pop back there are pages to catch up on!

VelmaKelly · 02/01/2012 09:10

Is it too late to join this thread? I'm about to start week 3 of cto5 but it's been abit hit and miss over Christmas. Too hot to run today. (in Oz). Smile

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 02/01/2012 09:13

week 1 run 2 done. It was sort of easier as I knew what was coming but more difficult as my legs were complaining reasonably loudly - so I told them to shut up and that they'd thank me for it in the end.

good luck to all those running today.

RebeccaMumsnet · 02/01/2012 09:18

VelmaKelly Of course the more the merrier Grin and Envy at running in Oz.

I made a huge mistake last night, i sat down for an hour and when I got up someone had swooped my knees for those of a 97 year old with arthritis , DH pretty much dragged me up the stairs carried me to bed.

I am pleased to report that i have my old knees back today, any ideas why that would happen? very strange indeed.

Anyway, rest day today. Is anyone else planning on doing sit-ups etc on rest days?

Panadbois · 02/01/2012 09:25

No excericse for me today. But I wouldn't call it a rest day. Christmas decorations to take down and a mountain of ironing to do onceIdragmyselffromhere--

Coudn't get myself comfy in bed last night cos of my achy shoulder, what's that all about??

Panadbois · 02/01/2012 09:27

((( just realised how to do stike through, even though I've been on MN for yeeeeaaaarssss- Duh!)))

notevenaChristmousie · 02/01/2012 09:30

Can I join belatedly - still haven't bought my shoes, that's tomorrow afternoon's task, then first run Wednesday. Pre DD I ran 5 and 10 Ks and taught D of E to grumpy teenagers, now a stone and a bit overweight and need to change for me - am single and happy but want to make some changes for myself. So if I'm not too late, I'm in, and well done to those who've started Xmas Smile

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 09:42

Welcome parttime, Velma and not even

Pmsl at Pan only just finding out how to do strike through Wink

Off to do week 1 run 2 - I'm aching before I start, that's worrying!

tribpot · 02/01/2012 09:48

I'm back! Yes, I rashly thought I'd go out before my body had a chance to realise it wasn't well enough ... well, of my last 3 attempts at day 1, week 1 this was the worst but at least I got through it, I think I ran 5 of the 8 runs because I felt sick half way round, which wasn't good.

And .. it snowed! (Only very slightly).

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 09:49

Rebecca perhaps you should strap up your knee before running next time? You may have over stretched the ligaments or done a bit of impact damage. Sad

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 09:50

tribpot don't make yourself ill running in the snow!

Anyway I will not get distracted by mn... Must go out now...

openyerlugholes · 02/01/2012 09:50

Oh rebecca Sad You had better start looking at care homes in the yellow pages - you are on the slippery slope to flowery pleated skirts and blue rinses and you might as well be prepared...

Teehee.

I am achy today too - not just knees, my whole legs! Not running today though as am looking after my nephew overnight and I need to bomb-proof the house...

openyerlugholes · 02/01/2012 09:52

Ooo it's been snowing here! None on the ground but loads on the hills. Sob.

NewYeargeekmum · 02/01/2012 09:53

Btw Pan you only have to do the '--' bit at the start and end of the sentence, not between every word. Hope I'm not sounding too patronising, I'm not meaning to be. Wink

AphraBehn · 02/01/2012 09:55

I did it! Sort of Hmm.

I managed the first run and part of the second but could feel my knees hurting so walked the rest.

But it was nice and invigorating to be out and I shall try again on Wednesday.

OneLieIn · 02/01/2012 09:56

Don't want to go out. I am I'm bed cup of tea in hand and naked dh next to me. Come on, come on, come on.

Kids are bounding down the stairs, that should make me move

MetalSian · 02/01/2012 10:15

I'm still waiting for verything to come before I start.

Well done to everyone who has got out there!
Now you just all need to keep up this motivation.

Stylelostinlabour · 02/01/2012 10:16

Welcome all newbies and well done all who have been out today.

Well I was full of sport billy excitement yesterday decided to do the shred DVD in the evening - lets just say thank goodness it's a rest day today and hopefully the pain will go by tomorrow night for my second run, my front of my thighs are killing me

For those with shoulder pain it can be caused by not relaxing and holding the stress though the neck/shoulders so you need to relax those arms when you run not tense up
