January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Open - It's all your fault Grin

((( walks away determind about not becoming group going moaner)))

Aseaandthreestars · 01/01/2012 11:06

Well done Pan!

Thederkinsdame - I don't know about asthma - hopefully there ill be someone along soon who does and can give good advice. All I can say is that it's one of the things that will improve. I do a bit of chest expanding breathing before I go out to give the old intercostals a bit of a wake up. Breathing while running in the cold is hard, but it does get better as you go on. Well done for getting another run under your belt.

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 11:22

Pan Grin you have every right to shout at me the next time I whinge about not wanting to run in force 10 gales and horizontal sleet!

fluffytowels · 01/01/2012 12:06

I'm hungover. The New Year doesn't officially start til tomorrow does it? Blush

Plenty of liquids, early night and then I'm on it Grin

Ishtar2410 · 01/01/2012 12:16

The plan was to get up and run this morning. The reality was that I didn't get to bed until 2am. Then both DCs got in with us. This is a new diversion. I finally woke at 11.15.

Planning to go later on - probably on the treadmill as it'll be dark by the time I get the opportunity.

Keep going guys!!

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 12:43

Wish I had a treadmill Envy

ohbugrit · 01/01/2012 12:53

open, check out your council's leisure facilities. Here we get unlimited family access to all council pools, gyms, exercise classes etc for £24 a month. The local sports centre here is pretty new and runs loads of activities, and has 4 treadmills in the gym. Doesn't fit the usual dreary image of municipal facilities at all!

tribpot · 01/01/2012 13:06

Yes - my ds always asks if he can go on the treadmills which overlook the swimming pool at our leisure centre but he is too young yet. I might well look into membership for a more pleasant weeknight alternative to flailing around in the rain and snow.

That said, I've concluded there's no chance of me getting out today. Having been so ill over Christmas has really set me back and I was amazed at how difficult I found it even to walk a short distance again yesterday :( I feel like I've been set back several months, which will make finding the energy for the school run plus a FT job pretty gruelling - gargh, I had forgotten what it's like not to be able to walk at a normal speed!

Vajazzler · 01/01/2012 13:11

I did my first run this morning too! Managed to run every single bit that I was meant to even though I thought I was going to die. Grin

FatimaLovesBread · 01/01/2012 13:14

Can I join?
I think I want to start, well I know I want to get fit and lose weight Smile
What do I need to know? What essentials do I need?
I'm currently downloading the podcasts.

Not sure when i'll start though, currently bunged up with sinusitis but might give it a go today or tomorrow

jchocchip · 01/01/2012 13:15

Done it! week1 run 3 on holiday in the heat around a forest trail teaming with runners and families with children and new bicycles! Bit faster today too. Red and sweaty at the end so I must have burned off some of last night's excesses!

Lotsofchooks · 01/01/2012 13:26

Another newbie to running here have read through the whole thread phew! I did the first run on Friday and completed the second this morning and feel fab :)

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 13:39

oh am sure there is a gym in the HS in the next village and think I could use that! Good thinking.

tribpot sorry you feel lousy. Hope you are fighting fit soon.

Welcome to newbies Smile.

All you need initially comfy clothes, GOOD running shoes, enthusiasm and this thread.

Then you can think about getting an mp3 or ipod or whatever so you can have music whilst you run. A C25K app is very helpful too. I have one on my bb instead of downloading the podcast like others have done.

yehudiwho · 01/01/2012 13:50

dont forget the sports bra lugholes - I did my first run with an ordinary bra and nearly got black eyes- sports bra despite being a bit small was a revelation

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 13:59

How could I forget that yehudi Shock. I wouid need spinal reconstruction if I ran without my scaffolding in place!

RebeccaMumsnet · 01/01/2012 14:08

Just popping in to say hi , haven't caught up with the thread yet but will have a read tonight. Just wanted to commit myself to this by saying I've just done my first run, I'm so pleased.

It wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be. Do I get extra brownie points because it was pissing it down? Grin

Good luck to those who are going to start this week and well done to everyone who has already started, will pop back tonight when the DC are in bed.

falalalalagirl · 01/01/2012 14:55

I did my first run in sleet so, if there are points going, I want some too Grin

Just waiting for DH to fix his iphone so I can do second run tomorrow with choons to keep me going. Any suggestions for good motivational soundtracks anyone? I always used to work out at the gym to Tong, Cox, Sasha and Oakenfold's original Essential Selection which is perfect

AphraBehnOnTheSherry · 01/01/2012 15:38

I really fancy going for my first run (honestly Grin) but 1. It's really raining and 2. My feet are killing me from dancing in heels last night.

Pitiful excuses, I know.

Stylelostinlabour · 01/01/2012 16:37

Well done all who have braved the elements today I think that top trumps my 7.30 run :)

Those giving the excuses get your trainers on and get outside!

Regarding the breathing I was told when I was training for the great north run ( about 5 years ago) that most people breath every time you put your foot down when running which you don't need to do but we get ourselves into the ryhme that means we are breathing more often then we need to - they told me to concentrate on my breathing not on my feet and this really helped me not to get to huffy and puffy. Hope that helps some people?

kandinskysgirl · 01/01/2012 16:39

I've read through the whole thread, laid out my clothes and shoes for tomorrow and am planning an early night. I WILL start this tomorrow!!

I'm hoping that posting will keep me going, especially as I am off to NZ in two weeks so I am worried that I will come back and give up, hopefully you lot can kick me into action!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 01/01/2012 17:25

I didnt run today cos it was raining and I am a wuss Blush

Will HAVE to go tomorrow now wont I?

Maybe my new gear will come in time

NewYeargeekmum · 01/01/2012 17:36

Welcome Fatima, Lotsof and kandinskys

Well done on all you runners! Miserable weather and late nights - pah! You are all fantastic and I am proud of you. Points all round especially to the following:
Open - for doing it whilst ill
Pan - for battling the elements
Style - for being an early riser
Yehudi - for keeping it up despite missing a day
Thederkins - for surviving despite not breathing!
Jchoc - for doing it on holiday!
Lotsof and kandinsky - for reading the whole thread, that's a marathon in itself!

also kudos to Rebecca and Vajazzler on your first runs!

And special mention goes to those who can't get out at the moment for whatever reason, but are still posting encouragement and are determined to start soon. I hope you get to do the first run soon, it's a real achievement.

I'm going to do my second run tomorrow, am prepared for it to be difficult but looking forward to it!

NewYeargeekmum · 01/01/2012 17:38

MrsDV your wussness hangs in the balance now - if you don't go running tomorrow you will bear the title of Queen Wuss for 7 days.
