January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Ah, so your iPod isn't an iPod Touch then, MrsDV? Add that to the list of running essentials in that case! Xmas Grin (In fairness, if you downloaded it from iTunes on your laptop it couldn't actually know you were going to try and install it on an incompatible device - even Apple products aren't telepathic .. yet .. Confused)

ohbugrit · 31/12/2011 22:23

LaTourEiffel, if I am running near traffic I only wear one earphone.

For night running I use a headtorch - this one is the dogs' and quite cheap too and also take two large dogs Grin although neither are famed for their bravery ...

Honestly I think you just have to run somewhere reasonably well lit and not too dodgy.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 31/12/2011 22:31

It IS an ipod touch. I synched it for apps and everything. I will look again tomorow but I am slightly pissed now Blush so will not attempt it tonight.

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 22:36

As requested

Through rain and snow and skies of grey
We will keep running the Couch to 5K
Though lack of sleep and time do test us
We wil not let excuses best us
For 2012 will be the year
For weight loss, fitness and good cheer
Nine weeks of running isn't that long
So come on ladies, get those running shoes on!

tribpot · 31/12/2011 22:36

Ah. Well then you should be fine! (I think). Will have a go with ds' iPod Touch tomorrow perhaps.

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 22:38

Mrs dv I have got the free runkeeper app - seems to work well, and didn't have to pay.

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 22:39

LaTour, run only in well lit areas and with only one earpiece in. Stay safe!

jchocchip · 01/01/2012 08:31

Happy New Year! May get a chance to 'run' today - hope so after the excesses of last night...

thestringcheesemassacre · 01/01/2012 08:43

Good luck to all the new starters today.
I did run 2, week 2 yesterday and really went for it at the end. It was good.
Run 3 tomorrow and then it will be week 3, eek.

i was really thinking about signing up for a race for life style 5k event so I keep up the motivation.

Happy new year!

Stylelostinlabour · 01/01/2012 08:45

Runs in all excited like a black lab puppy, circles thread and jumps on sofa, licks everyones face...

Well 7.30am this New Years Day I did my first day 1 week 1 - feeling every so smug updating my Facebook while all other friends are still in bed hungover

Right off to take the kids swimming for the day

Here's to a great fit not flabby 2012 to all

Good luck to everyone going out today for the first run

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 01/01/2012 09:00

impressive work Style!!

Aseaandthreestars · 01/01/2012 09:06

Well done Style! How did it go? Details please.

I'm here because I'm supposed to be writing an essay. DH is thinking of going for a run. I'm thinking of going with him so that I can put my essay off. This is weapons-grade procrastination.

Panadbois · 01/01/2012 09:10

Happy new year!

I'm up and dresses. Turkey's in the oven.

But it's pissing it down, don't make me go!! I'll drown!

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 09:11

Well I got up this morning. STILL feel like I have a huge stone in my stomach. No idea why. Plus found out my period had started but decided to do my first run anyway. But the app crashed aaarrrgggh!!!

So I used the timer on my bb and did 1min run/1 min walk for half an hour. Does that sound ok for day 1? Absolutely loved it. Forgot what a buzz I get from running and had to stop myself from attempting to run the whole way! Finished off with 2min run. Was so quiet too - no-one about.

Felt the usual places where I am prone to blisters. Must get plasters in readiiness. Oh and TIP FOR THOSE PRONE TO BLISTERS - wear 2 pairs of socks. It reduces the friction. Forgot to do that this morning.

Anyway, feeling great, despite dodgy stomach. Off to have a shower then will try to sort out a decent app.

Enjoy your runs everyone!

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 09:13

Oh and well done style Grin. When's your next one?

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 09:14

Pan - get out there! You will regret it if you don't.

Aseaandthreestars · 01/01/2012 09:17

Morning Lugholes. Sorry to hear stomach is still a pain - hope it gets better soon. Well done on the run!

This thread is making me want to get started on Day 2.

Aseaandthreestars · 01/01/2012 09:18

Pan - running in the rain is a good thing. Smug levels get very high indeed. And you don't get as red-faced and sweaty.

Panadbois · 01/01/2012 09:24

it was raining on my first day, but this is RAINING.

I'll hate it! I'm waiting for a lull.

Aseaandthreestars · 01/01/2012 09:27

Ah, if it's RAIN, then you're best off with a cuppa and a copy of Runners World.

yehudiwho · 01/01/2012 09:28

completed run which should have been yesterday. very glad for this thread as could easily have lost impetus. Thats week one done and still puffing hard after a minute - bit scared of my ability to do 90secs running Tuesday and
that 30 minutes running seems a mountain
Plus back to work Tuesday so organising the morning will be a challenge. however on the plus side the feeling of acheivement is excellent and the more you do the easier it is to get motivated

NewYeargeekmum · 01/01/2012 09:56

Well done thestring, style, open and yehudi on your runs. I am v impressed Grin

Yehudi, I was puffing quite hard after the running bits too - and I'm also worried about going up a gear! Hopefully we'll be ok though.

My next run is tomorrow but feel like doing something today, may go for a walk...

openyerlugholes · 01/01/2012 10:04

Thanks asea Smile

Well done yehudi. You are getting on great!

Going to my sis for dinner today, but don't think I will be eating much tbh. Dh says he has a dodgy stomach too Confused. No idea what it is.

Have downloaded a new bb app and it seems to be working better so looking forward to getting out again through the week to try it.

thederkinsdame · 01/01/2012 10:14

Week 1, run 2 done. I am exhausted but exhilarated! I was abt the same today as before - I managed 2 x 60 secs runs and them about half of each of the other runs. However, I did do a 2 mile walk yesterday, too.

I have to be honest, I found today harder and my legs were like lead but I'm proud I managed to complete it!

A question for all you seasoned runners - I find it difficult to control my breathing especially in the cold. I'm breathing in through my nose & out through my mouth, but does anyone have any tips to help an asthmatic?

Panadbois · 01/01/2012 10:51

OMG. I did it too! Through the rain, hail, lightning and thunder (seriously - wouldn't have started out if I'd have known Confused)

Thederkin - I found it harder today too (second run first wk). My legs are killing me! But, I'm proud, but knackered.

DP and PIL coming here for turkey and trimmings now so I'll catch up with younall later. Have a good day x
