January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Thanks asea and geek Smile

Don't think I'll be having dinner anyway

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 16:28

Hope it isn't a bug. Remember that exercise boosts the immune system, so you'll be able to face down the bugs more easily

Stylelostinlabour · 31/12/2011 16:44

Right thank you ladies - its a pact tmrw morning it is at 7.30 - have laid out iPod and clothes as well ;)

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 16:58

Well done Style. Please don't be scared. I have never, ever noticed anyone pointing or laughing at me. If anyone is judging me for running, then trust me, I'm judging them a lot harder.

Stylelostinlabour · 31/12/2011 17:35

Not quite sure why scared just so much weight to lose and I'm going to do it this year!

MABS · 31/12/2011 17:40

good luck Style!

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 18:25

Ohbugrit said it up-thread, don't worry about losing weight, concentrate on getting fit. Good luck for the morning, can't wait to hear how you got on.

Ishtar2410 · 31/12/2011 19:03

Yep - agreed, don't focus on losing weight, concentrate on getting fit. Getting your body toned and healthy will give you bags of confidence and you might just see the weight come off without having to bother with a diet. DH doesn't really watch what he eats, but he does a 40-60 min run at least 4 out of 7 days and this has changed the way his body looks. (He's lost weight too, but hasn't ever dieted).

Big congratulations to everyone who ran today for the first time, and 'keep at it' to those who have continued with the running plan.

And for those of you still deciding whether to take the plunge...go on...give it a go!

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 19:24

I am going to repost my poem to fish for more compliments to inspire anyone that missed it

Through rain and snow and skies of grey
We will keep running the C25K
Though lack of sleep and time do test us
We wil not let excuses best us
For 2012 will be the year
For weight loss, fitness and good cheer
Nine weeks of running isn't that long
So come on ladies, get those running shoes on!

Let's be the best runners in 2012 apart from those in the Olympics

Happy new year to all my fellow get fit friends

Geekmum x

ln1981 · 31/12/2011 19:45

Happy new running year to you all

HalleLoujaandhappynewyear · 31/12/2011 21:12

ILouminated here. I have a new year name change and then will get back to plain old HalleLouja.

HalleLoujaandhappynewyear · 31/12/2011 21:17

I just twisted my knee when running but think its ok a bit tender but walking around seems to help it. Am going out tomorrow. So there! She says.

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 21:26

Bad luck Halle Sad

Silly question but why is the the programme called c25k?

tribpot · 31/12/2011 21:29

Hazie, it's short for Couch to 5K, i.e. you go from being a couch potato to being able to run 5 kilometres virtually faster than Superman. (Might have exaggerated the last bit).

I feel there is not enough emphasis on 'couch' in the programme, surely the first week at least should be practising getting off the couch and strapping on all the new equipment and clothing you have purchased to accompany your free podcast Wink

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 21:54

tribpot what do you think I've been doing all week?

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 22:01

Why 25k though?

I was quite amazed thinking that I would be able to run 25k in 9 weeks! Grin

ohbugrit · 31/12/2011 22:04

Couch to 5k Grin

This is precisely why text speak should be abolished/banned/rejected wholeheartedly.

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 22:10
Grin Blush
tribpot · 31/12/2011 22:11

I fully agree, ohbugrit. I might campaign for the Twitter hashtag to be updated - that'll really show them.

Hazie, the programme after is called C210K. Let me assure you, you are not meant to run 210 kilometres at the end of it :)

NewYeargeekmum · 31/12/2011 22:11

That's why I wrote it in full on the thread title! Flummoxed me a bit too at first!

tribpot · 31/12/2011 22:13

Geekmum, perhaps your poem should be reproduced with the text in full this time, young lady (I'll let you have 5K as presumably people know that isn't short for 5 kg or similar).

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 31/12/2011 22:13

I am a little bit achey today but ready for tomorrow's run.

I only started using c25k cos other people did

I tried to download the runapp thingy and it it let me pay for it and then told me my ipod wasnt able to support it! Meanies - thats £1.69 down the drain then!

Never mind. Grin

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 31/12/2011 22:14

Grin Grin

it would've been good if the first podcast involved Laura encouraging me to peel myself off the sofa "yes, those are your feet paddington, yes, you honestly can use them for running and no the world will not end if you actually get off the sofa"

LaTourEiffel · 31/12/2011 22:16

Can I ask a question? I can only run in the evenings, when its dark, so how do I go about doing that safely? Its just, if I have my earphones in, I can't hear if I'm being chased

Are there running clubs in the evenings?
