January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

I'm guessing here, but I think that the deltoid has to hold the arm up when you swing it, so you get a nice bit of muscle. Also, you lose weight, so the muscle is closer to the surface.

I also sort of lift myself up on the kitchen work surface - uses the triceps. I think the podcast is missing a trick here.

Haziedoll · 30/12/2011 19:01

Where can you get a deltoid from?

Haziedoll · 30/12/2011 19:04

Sorry just googled "deltoid". I already have them Blush Grin

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 30/12/2011 19:06

Hurray, hurray and hurray again for everyone who did their first run today. You must be dead chuffed.

I'm planning my first outing first thing tomorrow about 6.30am or so to fit in around the incredible awake children I have (who are v rarely asleep at the same time). Oh please let me not bugger it up in some hideous way is what I keep thinking! But, when I have done it I know I will be over the moon Smile

ps also waiting for Sports Direct parcel but to be fair they've had my order for less than 24 hours so can't wait tapping my foot by the front door just yet

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 30/12/2011 19:10

Week 1 day 2 completed and I've ordered some stuff from sports direct.

Aseaandthreestars · 30/12/2011 19:10

Grin They're the ones that make the top of the arm look lovely.

I hope we see some more toned arms on this thread - otherwise I'm using entirely the wrong parts to run.

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 30/12/2011 19:19

Sorry forgot to say well done to all of you who have started and for those who haven't it really is great. have never been a runner but last time I almost felt like one.

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 30/12/2011 19:20

Also me again I have been using the runkeeper app on my android phone and its fab.

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 19:25

'Sorry just googled "deltoid". I already have them'

Haziedoll hahahaha! That's cheered me up no end Grin

Think I will start tomorrow...

Aseaandthreestars · 30/12/2011 19:29

ILOU - you are a runner, that's why you felt like one. You use Runkeeper! That's a giveaway sign.

arabellacaterpillar · 30/12/2011 19:31

Oh girls you are really making me want to get started.......have never been a runner but would love to and have been thinking about the c25k programme for the past few days since reading this thread!!

My question when do you fit it into your day.....realistically I think I need to do it first thing - 6.30am.....eeeeekkkk, will I really be able to drag my sorry self out of bed???

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 19:38

Arabella, after you drag yourself out the first few times you won't be able to stop yourself. Is very addictive. Go for it!

I plan to run first thing too, although not quite that early!

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 30/12/2011 19:44

I only got to week 5 past time but got pregnant so that is why I stopped. Runkeeper is good cos I like stats. Geek that's me.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/12/2011 19:51

I went to sports.com yesterday thanks to a post on here Hmm

I purchased a variety or pink fluoro things including a belt you can put your ipod in for about £3! I want toned arms but wont get them until I can stop hanging on to my ipod/phone/keys so they dont fall out of my pocket Blush

Guessed my size in a rather fetching pink sports bra for less than £8. I reckon I have gone down a cup size at last.

Two vests and some of those scarey 'tights'. V.cheap pair of runners but I hope they will do ok for a bit. Cant really splash out on mega runners just yet.

They will be my treat when I finish the podcasts.

Can you download those apps on ipod or are the only for iphones?

tribpot · 30/12/2011 19:55

Should be fine for the iPod as well, MrsDV - have a look.

debka · 30/12/2011 20:24

I DID IT!!!! All size 24 of me did day 1 and felt bloody brilliant!! I even RAN all the runny bits, felt like a proper full on running person. Feel so exhilarated!!

I'm going out at 7.30 when the DDs are in bed, that way I can have a shower and relax when I get in.

WELL DONE all others who started today. GET US!!

debka · 30/12/2011 20:24

(sorry, feeling rather shouty after my RUN!!!!)

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/12/2011 20:30

Thanks tribpot.

WELL DONE debka!!!

I want to say something about how much I respect the C25Kers who are needing to lose weight but its going to come out as patronizing twaddle so its going to stay in my head.

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 20:46

You lot are brilliant, well done!

I don't really fit in here because I've been following c25k for a few weeks, but my own thread has dwindled somewhat and it is an infectious enthusiasm - so I am lingering and enjoying it :)

For various reasons I ran week 4 for the 5th time today (should've been on week 5) and I was amazed. Due to the ice I'd been on a treadmill for most of December but today ran a route which was longer than needed for the podcast a month ago. Today I ran right to my front door and had no time for a cool down! AND it felt easy - I was out of breath and hot but it was really, really doable - 16 minutes of running with 5.5 minutes of breaks and I bloody did it.

I still feel as enthusiastic and excited about this as I did right at the beginning - it's the best exercise I have ever done, the most enjoyable and something I can see being part of my life permanently.

Santageekmum · 30/12/2011 20:47

Welcome Arabella

Omg am so impressed, inspired and jealous of all you RUNNERS! Get you indeed!

Am going to put my foot down (pun intended) and say I am going for a run tomorrow. Just told DH that he'll have to look after ds. Hurrah!

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 20:56

Help! Does the podcast work with an ipod shuffle???? Need to know before I bother downloading it and paying for it!

Panadbois · 30/12/2011 20:59

I have to say that running at 6.30 am or in the evening shows a hellova lot of commitment, well done you.

My kids leave for school at 8am so planning on doing it straight after they leave, then come back for a refreshing shower before starting work, all smug Smile

happyAvocado · 30/12/2011 21:36

thanks for the warm welcome
I ordered my sports bra today and did my walk - it aws in 2 parts - to and from my library :)

I guess I need to get myself one of those apps, perhaps for my phone then and a pair of headphones

i am unfit size 18, losty a stone in the last six months through sensible eating, but I would hate to put it on

I see brave souls running at 6 am as Idrive to work and I am impressed that people have so much motivation.

I will sing Hallelujah the day I can run for 30 min again (was able to do it perhaps about 15 years ago :) )

thederkinsdame · 30/12/2011 21:38

I feel great after my 'run' today. Really proud of myself. I deliberately started on a random day, to avoid my usual 'I'll start in Monday/the new year/next month excuses. I'm looking forward to my next trip out and wanted to say thank you to all of you for giving me the courage to do this.

cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2011 22:17

I've just puns this thread and looked up the couch to 5k and looks good. I have lost 9Kg in 7 weeks by eating less crap and smaller portions but although it's nice to fit into some old clothes it's mainly because I want to be healthier. I said to dh last week that when I'm thinner I'll start running and he laughed but this looks doable even without being thinner! I will be an evening runner too, often walk my dog in the evening (dh and I take it in turns) so could do it then. Great that so many have started :)
