January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Santageek hi :) Only just had chance to look at this and the NHS programme. Although I can already run a certain distance it's not going to hurt me to start from scratch, now it's just knowing when my first run will be.....

Bit about me (some of which I don't normally share)...
2 years ago I was 22 stone, last year(june) I was 21 stone, this year (now) I am 16 1/2 stone. I ran when I was 22 stone, I also completed a 2 triathlons at 20 stone and a 50 mile bike event when I was about 20 stone! Had a baby in September - hence how I know Santageek. I have run a fair amount in the past, but had a heel problem that I'm not sure it's cleared up properly, hence me thinking about starting from scratch, and hopefully that will keep it at bay. I had stopped running just before I got pg, to let the heel heal, then got pg and had HG and so couldn't do anything for the first 4 months, then by that time it had been too long not running to start doing anything. Been out a couple of times since LO was born, did a 2.2K run about 5 weeks ago, but that was the last time.

Not promising I can post a lot in here, but I'll try and pop in and say hi and let you all know how each run has gone.

I reckon I will either go out tomorrow or Sunday. Watch this space. Grin

Oh and I have this bra at a 38J (BF boobs) I need something to hold me down, it really works. I also used to wear it when I was a 40FF (my 20 stone weight boob size)

100years · 30/12/2011 22:18

Oh and I'm now back to my non Christmas name. :)

Santageekmum · 31/12/2011 00:34

Welcome Cinnamon and 100years

Cinnamon well done on your weight loss already! I'm doing it the other way round - exercise then diet - although will seriously start to cut back once the house is emptied of all Xmas food!

100 - I can't believe you did all that sport when you were larger! You must be a natural runner, just imagine how much more you'll accomplish when you've got less weight on! Thanks for the bra tip too.

Thederkins well done and you're welcome!

I am v excited at my first outing tomorrow!

whooooooo hooooo

first run done. feeling very proud indeed

but one small point, man alive, how did they find such mind numbingly boring music on the nhs podcast???!

openyerlugholes · 31/12/2011 09:02

Ooooh well done perfecting!!!

Right, couldn't work out how to put the get the podcast onto my ipod shuffle (and you lot were no help WHATSOEVER!!!) despite trying all night. So have given up and have got the bb app instead. Will use that to tell me when to run/walk and use my ipod for music only.

Except am still working out how to get music on there.... Thought I had loaded on an entire CD. Turns out I have 3 songs on it, and NONE are from the CD!! Am hopeless at this kind of thing.

tribpot · 31/12/2011 09:25

open - the podcasts are just mp3 files, do you use iTunes to get stuff on to your iPod? If you do, you can just download it (for free) through iTunes, et voila, all good.

Paddington - I think the Mail would have had a field day if the NHS had spent lots of money on top quality choons for the podcast, I'm guessing they had to take whatever they could get.

openyerlugholes · 31/12/2011 09:30

Thanks tribpot. Yes I tried to download from iTunes but it isn't showing on my ipod. But neither are any of the songs I also downloaded. Am obviously doing something wrong...

If I do successfully manage to get a podcast on there, will my shuffle play my music as well as the podcast?

tribpot · 31/12/2011 09:44

It sounds like your iTunes isn't set up to sync all your music / podcasts to the iPod when it's connected, open. Mine isn't either. When it's connected, you should see the iPod listed in the left hand part of the screen underneath 'Library' and 'Store' (I think - have never used iTunes on Windows so it may be different).

If you click on it and then in the main window to the right, you should see some options at the top called Music, Podcasts, Movies. Click on the Music one and you should see that the 'Sync all' box is unchecked, with possibly individual artists or albums or tracks checked underneath (explaining how some of them mysteriously appeared on the iPod). Ditto if you go on to the podcast window you can do the same.

However, a quick experiment with my iPhone makes me think you won't be able to play your own music over the podcast (because they both play in the 'Music' app) so you might be better off sticking with the BB app for the running cues and putting your playlist on the iPod.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/12/2011 09:44

openyerlugholes I think it depends if you have to to sync automatically or not. My dh has a shuffle so I made him a separate play list as otherwise it just syncs what it can fit from the beginning of your library. When you plug the iPod in and click on it there are options for syncing, if you set it to manual you can chose what you put on it or just make a playlist for your shuffle and set it to automatically sync from that list.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/12/2011 09:46

X-posts tribpot!

yehudiwho · 31/12/2011 09:48

well done all you runners!I may be the first dodger as I was supposed to do run 3 of week one this morning but ds woke at 5.30 with a tummy ache and then I fell asleep and missed the alarm. i am frankly too embarrassed to go in the daylight so will attempt an evening run tonight if not I swear I will go tomorrow morning.
mrs devere - cant agree more about the music on the NHS pod - although have to admit on my second run it became a bit addictive - the runny bit has a beat which fitted my slow jog perfectly

MetalSian · 31/12/2011 10:12

I actually forced myself inot buying the things I need today.
So over £50.00 down but should be ready to start at the end of the week.

I have to do it now... otherwise it will be a big waste of the money I just spent!

PaddingtonsMarmalade · 31/12/2011 10:20

tribpot - agreed The Daily Fail would no doubt have got all excitable about better music....just a pity as my mind kept wandering to the subject of whether or not I was going to collapse Grin

yehudi - that sounds like a reason not an excuse to me - doesn't sound like dodging.

MABS · 31/12/2011 10:30

veryb well done to you all! i have a large champagne hangover :(

OneLieIn · 31/12/2011 10:31

Hello, can I join?

I have been lurking, read about the podcast and have downloaded it. Jut done my first "run" ....think I might be breaking the law by calling it that! Grin

My face is now the not red, not rosy, not pink but the colour cartoon characters go just before they explode!

It's a great podcast so far one day in.

Have you all started?

openyerlugholes · 31/12/2011 10:52

That's brilliant, thanks so much cinnamon and tribpot. Will have another fiddle about with it today Smile

Well done to all those who have started already! Brilliant!

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 11:08

Morning everyone.

I've done day 1! And I've had my omelette, coffee and ibuprofen (breakfast of champions).

I've run before and thought it would be a piece of cake - it was actually proper challenging. I'm now in awe of anyone doing it for the first time - huge congratulations to anyone who has done their first day.

I'm going to try day 2 on Monday. Eep.

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 31/12/2011 11:21

I have managed to do my knee in though. Not hugely but its a bit sore.

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 11:29

Oh no.

What have you done? Are you icing it and taking anti-inflamatories?

openyerlugholes · 31/12/2011 11:39

Oh no Ilou... that's must be really disappointing. Be careful though - you don't want to damage it any more.

Santageekmum · 31/12/2011 11:39

Welcome oneliein

ILOU what happened to your knee?!

I've just got back from my first run! I did 3k in total but missed one of the 'running' bits because I was so knackered!

couldn't have done it without all you lovely people joining my thread and inspiring me! Am so knackered but determined to keep going knowing that we're all in this together

100years · 31/12/2011 11:42

Does a little post run/walk dance

Done the first one. And considering I can run a couple of K already I found it a bit harder than I thought I would. But that's good Grin

Hoping my heel stays fine and I have no probs with it.

Good luck any other runners, and well done to anyone who has already been out Grin

Came in and as the nice lady suggested I had a drink and added banana to my cereal (ok so she said have a banana not add it to cereal) instead if putting sugar on it GrinGrin [polishes halo]

When can I have another of the frosted gingerbread cookies I made yesterday? [unpolishes halo]Wink

Santageekmum · 31/12/2011 11:59

100years you can still dance following that? Respect!

Did anyone else feel dizzy or lightheaded afterwards? Confused

OP posts:
100years · 31/12/2011 12:04

Yeah I'm full of beans now.

No I don't feel like that post run, unless I've really pushed myself and not eaten properly. Are you well otherwise?

Aseaandthreestars · 31/12/2011 12:05

I often get a little bit dizzy after exercise as it can lower blood pressure. I make sure I have a drink before I go.

I've just checked on Runkeeper - i burned 428 calories. 428!

I've just re-read 100years post a couple of times as the first time I thought you were putting gingerbread cookies in your cereal Grin
