Another thread!

OP posts:
OctopusSting · 06/03/2012 21:42

They covered a lot of stuff which we actually know - eg: it takes AGES to exercise off excess calories

It also showed that by increasing your 'basic burn' calories in your day to day life is the best way to use calories, rather than going to the gym

And the most surprising bit was that for 'health' purposes you need only do 3 bursts of 'manic' 20 second exercises 3 times a week - so 3 mins exercise will keep you healthy! It also showed a link between how your body responds to exercise and how much benefit your body takes from it, but this depends on measurable genetics. Twas v interesting and worth a look.

Well done on 9.3 MyChild, that is amazingly low for your height!

My food is going ok, I did see a programme the other night following some eskimo's (no idea what it was actually about lol - actually think it was husky dogs) and saw them trekking miles and eating a few slithers of frozen whale meat. Made me almost quite nauseous about the amount we can eat in the west and think this is any way normal for survival. It seems to have had an impact on my eating for now anyways

OctopusSting · 06/03/2012 21:45

Hey Digbert, missed you there Grin

My low carb (ish), ok calorie (ish) faves are ham with cauli cheese, thai chicken & mushroom soup, veg omelette, spag bol/shepherds pie made with extra lean mince and loads of veg, chicken curry. However i tend to have most of my calories in the evening as i can do with very little in the day. Rocket & parmesan salad is my lunchtime staple.

onanightlikethis · 06/03/2012 21:56

I'm opposite- I need my main meal in the day. Tel me the recipe for Thai chicken soup....

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 06/03/2012 22:14

Oh, I saw them discussing the 3 min exercise theory on Breakfast last week, though I was rushing around and didn't hear the details. (I did notice the guy talking about it was a bit overweight, but IIRC they were saying it is good for regulating insulin levels and not necessarily keeping you slim? Not sure if I got the wrong end of the stick).

How many cals are there in your parmesan salad, and do you have anything else in it apart from rocket?

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 06/03/2012 22:16

I'd love to try eating the bulk of my calories during the day....it makes sense, but I feel so munchy in the evenings if I'm not exercising, that I'm scared to try it! Though, who knows, it might actually stop me wanting to munch.

OctopusSting · 06/03/2012 22:18

Thai chicken soup

I use Sainsbury's exotic mixed mushroom pack which is lovely. Also, if i am having carbs, i turn it off and drop in a bundle of ramen noodles and leave for a while. They cook in the hot soup which is better after a few hours as the flavours really develop.

Ooh, i also have a lovely hot & sour salmon recipe if you want?

OctopusSting · 06/03/2012 22:22

MyChild - yes it was for health rather than slimness. For slimness they recommended just trying to up your daily 'burn' rate, eg: by pacing up and down whilst waiting for a train/bus etc. Move whenever you can rather than staying still.

As rocket is v expensive atm i am mixing in spinach with it. Love watercress too, but again not really available. I drizzle some very expensive Balazau balsamic vinegar over it which is just gorgeous. 117 calories for a huge bowl and i sometimes add baby plum tomatoes if i am pushing the boat out Grin

OctopusSting · 06/03/2012 22:23

Hot and sour salmon or chicken or veg!

Merlion · 07/03/2012 04:43

Mychild I did lose a fair bit of weight to begin with but then more recently started plateauing which I think was due to the exercising so I think a combination of things that have led to the inch loss. I have been getting loads if compliments which is lovely!

I think I'm at about pre baby weight but feel and I think look much better than I did pre dd as I don't think I ever lost all the weight after ds although there is still some way to go before I get to that weight again!

The recipes all sound lovely.

OctopusSting · 07/03/2012 07:13

0.5 back on again. V odd as I was actually under calories yesterday. Although this happened last month too - post AF bloating Hmm

Circuits today - just wondering if I will pluck up the courage to ask for a body fat % test which they are offering for free ATM.

luckoftheirish · 07/03/2012 07:19

Oct, I would definitely swerve the fat test if they are anything like my gym! Got my fat % done at the start, middle and end of my Pt.. I got readings of 12.7%, then 19.7% and ended up at 13.7%!!!!

The Personal trainer said that weight loss and inch loss was a better indicator!!

Well done all again on your brilliant weight losses Smile

I have still not been on the scales which is a massive thing for me, trying to scale down the mental exercise although yesterday I did the shred level 1, 5km run, the school run and my friend begged me to go spinning last night! Rest day today Smile

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 07/03/2012 08:43

Was at the gym at 6.45am again

FjorGynAndHotWater · 07/03/2012 08:46

loti that is brilliant that you haven't been on the scales [proud] but Shock at all that exercise! Are you still feeling slinky?

octopus don't worry about the odd 0.5lb, we should know by now our weight does weird stuff and if we could just get out of the habit of weighing every day we's just see them going down never gonna happen in my house...

When I was reading back on the old threads I noticed that I blamed a lot of my Friday increases on period-related bloating but conveniently managed to ignore the fact that it never went away the next week well mine has finally arrived today so we'll see what effect it has on Friday Hmm

Today though have weed out the last of the weekend gain and another 0.25 Grin

FjorGynAndHotWater · 07/03/2012 08:48

that's dedication mychild!

OctopusSting · 07/03/2012 13:51

Well done on the early morning MyChild. I was waiting for a cuppa in bed at that time Grin

LOTI - lovely to see you Smile. You have persuaded me against the fat test lol Grin. Congrats on no weighing, and enjoy your rest day today Smile

I have been to the gym, 2.5k run (with HIT - high intensity training - intervals), 1hr circuits and 15 mins powerplate. I am SO pleased that my back feels just fine Smile. 10 days ago if someone had told me i would be able to do circuits at 95% capacity i would not have believed them.

Grapefruit for brekker, Leek/mushroom & philli toast for lunch and no idea for tea Grin

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 07/03/2012 14:18

Yay, Octopus on the non-hurty back! That sounds like an intense session you did there. Don't overdo it this week, though.

I say go for the fat % test. I too am not so sure how accurate they are...depends what method they use. They did mine at the gym and just pinched the side of my waist with those callipers. I don't carry much fat around my waist, so I did wonder how accurate it is and how the figure would differ if they did another area. Also, my scales measure body fat, and were about 5% different to the gym estimation!

Flippin heck loti, that's a lot of exercise! I dread to think what the non scaled-down mental version would be!

Fjorn I love going back over my old food diaries sometimes and looking at trends over time. It can be quite illuminating, as you've seen!

onanightlikethis · 07/03/2012 17:57

Recipes sound lovely. Just need to find time to cook them now!

OctopusSting · 08/03/2012 07:11

Grrr. + another 0.5

I know logically that I have not put on fat as I have not been over cals at all. It must be weirdy water retention for time if the month (happened last month too) or muscle mass from exercise. Seems a bit keen for that though Hmm

Pilates today and then going to the running shop to get properly fitted with new trainers Smile

FjorGynAndHotWater · 08/03/2012 10:12

I can't remember if I was -0.25 or evens today Hmm it was very early though, have come on the train to work today due to fecking car being in the garage again . Oh well, at least I got a walk in this morning!

OctopusSting · 08/03/2012 14:14

LOL Fjorny Grin

1hr pilates done. I spoke to my instructor about my back and she reckons it was ligaments, so no permanent harm done . Then went into town for some new trainers. I went to a specialist running shop where they record your gait on the computer and then fit the trainers. They were eyewateringly expensive compared to the Nike outlet where i normally get them, but i have heard so many people recently with foot problems caused by running, i wanted to get it done properly.

Then went and bought some super skinny jeans Shock in a size 10. It was Red Herring and i think they are guilty of a bit of vanity sizing, but hey ho.

I booked my fat % test after my pilates instructor said i was 'tiny' across my frame (front to back). Probably a nice way of saying 'no arse or tits' Grin

Walked 3.5k round town (according to map my run) and will do 2.5 miles for the school run this avo.

Happy sunny thursday's to you all Smile

onanightlikethis · 08/03/2012 20:35

Great news About the back! Better news about the size 10 jeans though!!! :))
Did spin tonight with PT - biggest ever calorie burn at ....798 cals! Am treating myself to a bag of crisps and a gin and slimline! I might buy some scales a the weekend-check how the loss is going. I've booked another 3 months of PT- which will take me to my triathlon.
Xx

FjorGynAndHotWater · 09/03/2012 07:10

for your back and Grin for the size 10 jeans octopus . Who cares about vanity sizing, if the label says 10 who are we to argue? Grin

at your exercise dig, that's brilliant! Glad you are enjoying your personal training so much you've decided to carry on Smile

I am down 1 this week Grin so less than 2lb to 11 1/2 stone!!!! After 2 years of yo-yo-ing at 12-something I still can't believe this is working but still very chuffed Smile

OctopusSting · 09/03/2012 08:56

Hurrah fjorn, keep on going Grin

Only 0.5 off to 10.3 which is disappointing given I have been really good and was down to 10.2.25 on Weds Hmm

no circuits today as parents here but I will do a 2.5ile walk this morning.

Excellent training Digbert, and I hope you have eaten some of those calories!

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 09/03/2012 09:19

9st 2! Got rid of the weird bloating from last week. Just in time for my girls night out tonight.

Fingers crossed I don't go too mad, but we're going for an Indian first, which is my absolute favourite. So my game plan is: light breakfast and lunch, largish snack mid-afternoon to keep me going (meal isn't til 8pm and I'll never last that long!) Four mile run in a bit, and will be following Paul McKenna principles at the meal. I can't have three weeks of trying to get back to the weight I was before a night out again...that was ridiculous. I've read that when you start maintaining you put on about 5lb, so that's the reason I'm carrying on really, so I've got a bit of leeway for those 5lbs, cos I'm happy where I am now.

Good news on the back Octopus...and the jeans...that must have felt brilliant! Superskinny, eh?

Wow Dig, as always your exercise is very inspiring.

Well done Fjorn on another pound melted away! That's really encouraging after you had a relaxed weekend...goes to show it's sustainable and an actual lifestyle change, not all or nothing. What method were you using when you weren't getting the results you wanted?

onanightlikethis · 09/03/2012 10:50

I bought some scales... I'm stuck at 10.8.... I thought I would be around 10.4 :( body shape has changed and I know muscl weighs heavier than fat.. But I've stuck to my cals mostly, so grrrrrrrr .
All a bit despondent... Off for a run to cheer myself up. Well done everyone.enjoy your curry my child.
