Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

Kotinka, there will be about 150 of the finest youths of the area - it's dd's 16th. In fancy dress. Much as I love Waitrose, I can't quite stretch to feeding them all! Hot dogs and cupcakes seemed like a good idea a few weeks ago. Making and decorating 144 cupcakes in the morning somehow sounds a lot less exciting......
Luckily I also have dd1 who is nearly 18 and very helpful, and dd3 (7) who tries her best!!

It's not in the house - I'm not that mad! It's in a village hall!!

Today's dilemma - ds is 15 next week and dh works away. Wants to go to Pizza Express on his birthday (fine, I'll have a salad and coffee, yawn) but tomorrow wants to go to the trendy fish and chip shop while his dad's home. So I guess I'll pick the batter off some fish and have a cup of tea. That'll be fun. Never mind, it'll all be worth it when I'm slim.

OK, cupcake and Brownie time.

Hello!

I am doing the vege version of the diet. I feel grim today (2 proper days in), is this normal? Light headed, bit sick, tired.

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 12/11/2011 12:49

I'm attempting 20g carbs a day.

I am mostly eating cheese and eggs. Woo!

FreeButtonBoo · 12/11/2011 13:07

Hello, strangers! I am back in the game, Low Carb People, after a very very bad summer/autumn.

Haven't had the guts to weigh myself yet but will do tomorrow morning. I guess I am around 10st 8 or 9. I want to get under 10 st and preferably to around 9st 7. I have taken my vital statistics though as that's something that might keep me going when the scales aren't shifting.

Had a late brunch today of bacon, fried egg, cheese and a couple of cherry tomatoes. Not sure about lunch but dinner is rump steak with spinach and mushrooms - yum.

I am aiming for under 50 carbs a day - that for me is enough to lose weight, I think. But they can only come from veg, berries and nuts/seeds. I can always go lower if it's not shifting. Will need to be careful re the booze as well. I do love a glass of vino blanco but have been drinking too much (oh, the shame of that eternal refrain!)

Right, off to tidy up and wash off the sweat from my Pilates class.

Hi Kinky - yes, the wobbles are fairly well known.

FreeButtonBoo · 12/11/2011 13:08

Oops, posted too soon. Do try to get some veg into you. Soup form is good because they feel more substantial but even just some broccoli steamed and covered in a little olive oil would be good to give your body something to hang on to!

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 12/11/2011 14:52

Thanks FreeButtonBoo. I'm going to make cauliflower cheese, low carb style, for tea and I have been eating a bit of veg. However, I won't be able to eat as much as I'd like at this stage, though in theory after 2 weeks I can go up to 40g carbs.

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 12/11/2011 14:53

I'm supposed to give up caffeine too. Have other people done this?

I have loads to lose. Probably around 3st to be in the normal weight range, more like 4 - 4.5st to be around a size 12, which is my ideal.

I may have ballsed up today by miscalculating my carbs. I've had more like 40g rather than 20g, if not more. This is going to be so complicated! Will I still go into ketosis on this amount?

In fairness, at the start of the week I was eating like 1,000,000g a day, so I have dropped down significantly Grin.

Breakfast was a protein shake (soya) and a slice of cheese, lunch was scrambled tofu/avocado/halloumi cheese, tea was cauliflower cheese made low-carb style. Much cheese today.

It must be pretty hard low-carbing as a vegetarian. Would love to hear what you find for variety.

Well. dd's 16th party went without too many hitches. It ws no alcohol but a few of them were a bit tanked. There were some amazing costumes - really amazing - and the DJ was fantastic. Dd had a great time. I obviously over-catered but very many cupcakes went. Rather less fun was checking the loos afterwards and the car park for cigarette butts. Dd is just really pleased everyone is fbing her in areally positive way!!

Tortington · 13/11/2011 02:06

any good recipes under 10 grams?

back on the wagon after a shakey couople of months

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/11/2011 08:28

Good to have you back Custy, I'm crap with recipes and rely on others, sorry.
And FreeButtonBoo, good you are back in the game too!

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn - welcome to you, I have to be around 20g carbs for ketosis.I think a veggie version will be harder for sure, I don't think anyone else on here is a veggie? And yes feeling proper crap in the early days, but it soon passes. Just keep going Smile LIke Kotinka, I didn't give up caffeine either, I like black coffee, and factor in the milk in tea into my carb allowance. When we first started this, having to give up tea was going to be a deal breaker for me, which surprised me a lot as I thought it would be something else that I would find difficult to give up! As with any diet, you need to make it work for you.

And goingmadinthecountry - glad the party went well. Sounds great!!

We went out last night - and it is so difficult in social situation where the meal is part of it, and there isn't much you can eat. This is the hardest diet to build into normal life I swear! I tried but suspect I will have fallen out of ketosis but with concerted effort it will only take me a day or so to get back in.
Have a good day all x

Hi all,

So I'm okay on my cheese-fest at the start (I'm only on Day 3) but I need to find other sources of lean protein after that?

I'm one of those shit vegetarians who will eat some fish (although I'm picky) so I intend to use tuna, some salmon, mackerel and probably prawns. I might even attempt interesting things with some white fish, and I fancy making a version of kedgeree I read about yesterday made with cauliflower rice. This is alongside tofu, eggs, and when I get out of the first phase, lots of TVP/Quorn (watching the carbs).

I've had scrambled tofu for breakfast. It is as fun as it sounds. I have it with a splash of double cream and some gruyere cheese.

cardoon · 13/11/2011 09:16

Kinky, do you eat tofu and quorn?

You can make great fajitas using strips of either of those and custy's Mama Lupe tortillas.

FreeButtonBee · 13/11/2011 09:18

Well, just weighed myself and have been deluding myself. Am back to 10 13. Which is almost where I started on 1 Jan.

Okay, am off for a run and then it's time for some breakfast.

I must admit that I am a bit less strict than some of you guys. Hope it won't be annoying for you all. I certainly don't restrict fat very much - particularly because I find that it really fills me up and so I am less likely to snack.

FreeButtonBee · 13/11/2011 09:20

Oh, this is quite an interesting low carb blog (lots of them are shit). It's amrican but the guy actually cooks, rather than using packet mix for everything. Not sure if there's much in the way of veggie stuff but it might be helpful to kick start your imagination, Kinky.

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 13/11/2011 09:57

Thanks for link Free.

cardoon I do eat quorn and tofu, though I think I have to be very careful with quorn on induction as it is carby compared to other foods. I'm actually writing stuff down today to add up as I go and teach myself the values of things. I think my just eat protein things didn't work so well for me yesterday! Hopefully I will get in at under 20g today.

I'm so pleased to have you lot to talk to. DH is already bored stupid by it, and I've only just started!

catinboots · 13/11/2011 11:40

Can I come back too?? Blush

Still stuck on 10st 13lb. Diet been ok but had a couple of stressful weeks at work and have been drinking wine.

Free - we weigh the same. What is your goal weight?? I'd love to be 9st 7lb.

catinboots · 13/11/2011 11:41

Not drinking wine at work BTW Grin

cardoon · 13/11/2011 12:12

It's endlessly fascinating, isn't it Kinky! Wink

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 13/11/2011 12:37

Does anyone know how many carbs are in mozzerella per 100g? I'm getting very conflicting information!!

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 13/11/2011 12:38

It's from Lidl so has no info on the pack; it is full fat.
