Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

I'm very cross with myself with all of this. Sometime back in around 2008 I almost reached my target of 9 stone. I was 9 stone 3. Buying clothes was easy, I never had to worry (that much) about sucking my tummy in - could pretty much guarantee that a size 10 would fit me. I even had two pairs of Next linen trousers in a size 8.

And what did I do? I relaxed. With the predictable and inevitable consequences.

So thoroughly agree that although losing weight might seem hard at the time, maintaining is actually much harder than losing.

And on an altogether jollier note, let me share with you a lovely vegetable side dish that I have just made for lunch:

per person

2 florets of cauliflower
2 florets of broccoli

steam/boil both until just tender

in a frying pan, heat some olive oil and quickly fry a finely chopped, dried red chilli (amount to suit you/your taste for heat)

chuck in the cauli/broccoli and stir fry on a high heat for a minute or so until browned; season with salt/black pepper

just before serving, stir in a tablespoon of Philadelphia (full fat not Light)

Absolutely gorgeous, even if I do say so myself! [hgrin]

RnB · 19/10/2011 15:34

That sounds gorgeous BIWI.

I think we've all been there - I got down to about 9 stone after I had ds2 - size 8-10. It was so wonderful being thin, all clothes looked great. No issues with fat arse or huge bosoms! Maintaining is soo hard - 'ah that pizza won't hurt/ hmm another portion of roast dinner will be fine/ lets crack open another bottle'. Before you know it you've got 2 stone to lose again. Grrrr.

THIS TIME I am going to be weighing myself EVERY SINGLE WEEK, and not letting myself get more than 4lbs above goal. It's a constant job of awareness and maintenance. I think low carbing in general is the way forward for me anyway. I feel so much better eating this way and my IBS almost completely disappears.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/10/2011 15:39

BIWI - I will try that, it sounds gorgeoise,

Definitely maintaining will be harder, but I just don't want to go back there, I wasted time being bigger. I think my aim of 9 stone something means that maintaining for me will be ensuring that they continue to do so. So if I creep up to 10 something - know I have to lose.

Easier said than done I know.

noddyholder · 20/10/2011 13:08

Hello!!!!! Hugely jealous of your 9lbs! Have had ham for lunch and black coffee feeling lighter already Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/10/2011 14:40

Teensy bit cheesed off because I'm not in ketosis according to my sticks and I genuinely don't know why. I shall carry on regardless obviously. WI tomorrow, but I think I will be the same, there hasn't been any loss for me so far this week.

No to the first, but maybe to the second, although I hadn't thought so.

I feel I need to take some sort of supplement though because I am getting proper cramp in my calf muscles at night, nearly every night now, which is horrible.

But on the upside, I gave blood on Tuesday and I thought that my blood would be deemed too weedy because of the low carb, thought it might be too thin or sommat but it was just fine, and funnily enough, my iron levels which are normally at the lower end of ideal, were better!

Swings and roundabouts really. Crampy legs, better blood

Hi all, WI tomorrow I'm not hopeful. I'm one day on pure protein then one day veg and protein. I lost well on the attack, pure protein phase that I did for 3 days.
I've plateaued I think.
Help! I'm so disheartened Sad
I'm really strict so I haven't fallen off the wagon.
Maybe I need more water?
Feel quite down about it

Tortington · 20/10/2011 22:54

how many carbs per day?

on another note, i gorged on dh's sugar free lemon bon bons and should know better, becuaes i will have the shits and sharts now, my belly is playing a tune and i feel like an alien is going to burst out any second.

those bloody sugar free sweets.

2 tbsp of oatbran a day Custy.

Will definitely cut down the sweeteners.
I ate today for instance
B- oatbran skimmed milk, sweetener. Decaf coffee, sweetener.
L- Tuna that was in spring water. Hard boiled egg.
Snack- low fat ham, cola zero.
D- Turkey mince with tomato, onion, pepper, courgette and aubergine.
Water and 2 maybe 3 decaf coffees.

More water, less coffee, coke? More food? Didn't have yogurt today.
Sorry I am ranting, I have no RL support.

D-

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/10/2011 23:34

Custy ... You need to practise and go on a show like Britains Got Talent. Smashing stuff....I'd vote for you.

I aim for 20g a day of carbs. It will be interesting to see if I'm back in it tomorrow morning. Weigh in will be interesting too. I reckon I will have stayed the same.

Stayed the same here, 10st 2. Still not in ketosis Sad I thought I had cracked this.

We are off to Ireland at the weekend, so low carbing could be doomed but I will get back on it as soon as we are back.

noddyholder · 21/10/2011 08:47

Are there any low carb cokes without aspartame as it gives me a migraine but i get addicted to it and look forward to it when low carbing!

prolificwillybreeder · 21/10/2011 08:56

Yes please kotinka!
Just giving my two their breakfast then off to get weighed.
Will report back.

prolificwillybreeder · 21/10/2011 09:01

Noddy- Sainsburys Cola Zero :-) contains caffeine. I am yet to find caffeine and aspartame free coke!
I'm cutting my sweetener to a sprinkle in my yogurt and 1 coke every other day.
Wow this is depressing but I have my goal and I am determined to look good in 4 weeks time, amazing infact!

Thanks for the support, much appreciated.

prolificwillybreeder · 21/10/2011 09:02

The coke tastes good by the way kind of like Pepsi
