Oops we're full up again! Hope it's OK to start a new thread. Come on Jillian devotees, let's keep up the good work and the great results!

Practically, please don't lose heart. We've all had weeks like that, and you can't see any reason why the result is not what you hoped for. All I can say is that in my experience it's quite common when you start Shredding - don't forget muscle weighs more than fat. Also, 1 pound is nothing really, and I found it really helpful to look at the result over a month, rather than a week. When I look back now at my weight log (yes I have one Blush), a good 8-9 months down the line and over 2 stone lighter, I can see weeks where there was a small gain for no apparent reason. But these mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Keep going, you won't regret it.

Hi practically,

just saw your post before logging out, but my immediate thought was the increase in weight may be due to the muscles you will be building as muscle weighs more than fat.

Alternatively, which may be more likely as you've only done 4 days of Shred, your muscles apparently retain water when you first start exercising. It could be this that's led to an increase.

And remember too that weight fluctuates dramatically from one day to the next - even sometimes from several hours to the next!

Whatever the reason, try not to be disheartened. When I started Shredding, a lot people suggested measuring yourself with a floppy tape measure. Then you'll be able to see that your measurements will decrease (and they definitely will!), which will hopefully reassure you that any weight gain is most likely to be lovely lean muscle Smile

Right, off to peer in cupboards and try to decide what to do for dinner. Definitely not fish...

threestepsforward · 29/09/2011 18:20

Cross posts knotty Grin
see you guys tomorrow

notyummy · 29/09/2011 18:36

Def agree that it could be water retention - quite common apparently. Probably a little bit early for the muscle to be adding weight, but just the right time for the water thing. The advice about using a tape measure is spot on - so many people on this thread have got great results that way.

practicallyimperfect · 29/09/2011 20:50

Thanks guys. I went ahead and did my workout, just a bit later because of heat. I am finding it a bit easier- still doing the girly push ups though, cam't imagine a time when I will do proper ones!

knottyhair · 30/09/2011 10:25

Well done carrying on with it practically, you'll see results soon enough!

I did 4 circuits of NMTZ this morning - did 1, 3, 4 & 5. Still can't do the first one with anything more than 2kg. Managed 3kg for circuit 3, and a mix of 2 & 3kg for circuit 4. I'm still crap at the windshield wipers, my abs are definitely "screaming" by the 2nd set!

OP posts:
threestepsforward · 30/09/2011 10:54

Great stuff Knotty!

I have NMTZ sitting in my DVD ready to do later. I have to do windshields with my knees bent because I get lower back pain and exercises like that (and the pike stuff) can really hit it badly. Not sure I get the same effect though! My real killer circuit on NMTZ is the tripeps one...I hate it!!!

Another glorious day here Smile Hope everyone has a good one...

threestepsforward · 30/09/2011 10:54

tripeps Hmm

threestepsforward · 30/09/2011 16:44

Phewee, NMTZ done! I must confess I skipped the triceps circuit though, what a chicken! If I can find the time and inclination later on I might go back and do it as it may bug me...

May manage something over the weekend, but am planning one day off for sure.

Have a fab weekend all Smile

knottyhair · 30/09/2011 17:47

Well done threesteps! Any Jillian in this heat is bloody hard. Are you going to do the triceps later then?? I'm going to have a day off tomorrow I think, back to it on Sunday.

OP posts:
threestepsforward · 30/09/2011 20:11

I did knotty, it would have niggled otherwise Grin
Enjoy the well-earned day of rest tomorrow!

TurkeyBurgerThing · 02/10/2011 14:14

Aaaaah I feel SO much better. Been "meaning" to start the Shred for months now. Finally fired it up and have done day 1 phase 1. Delighted as I feel fabulous. It's not too much of a killer either. I shall, however, be putting my sports bra on tomorrow!

practicallyimperfect · 02/10/2011 19:11

I didn't Friday as was so tired couldn't move off sofa. But did yesterday and as soon as dh gets home and ds for goes to bed will be doing it.

notyummy · 02/10/2011 20:21

No shredding/JM for me this weekend. Long-ish runs though on Friday and Sunday and managed a quick 15 blast of pilates yesterday. DH did NMTZ tonight and declared it 'hard'.

I am 6W6Ping tomorrow......

Jacksterbear · 03/10/2011 11:11

Good work everyone! Well done for getting started Turkey!

Had a personal trainer session this a.m. Booked it as a one-off mainly to check technique etc. Was good, she was v complimentary about the exercise I must have been doing to be in such (relatively) good shape - thanks Jillian! She also pointed out a few things I was doing wrong without realising so that was v helpful.

knottyhair · 03/10/2011 17:05

Blimey threesteps, in the words of Roy Castle, that's dedication to go back and do a missed circuit! And Turkey, well done, and hope you haven't got 2 black eyes Grin. Jackster, where were you going wrong out of interest? In case I'm doing similar bad things! Did a L1 6W6P this morning with a 3kg weight - sweat city is all I'm saying. Hope that's not TMI Blush.

OP posts:
Jacksterbear · 03/10/2011 17:30

Knotty: I have one knee that turns in on squats and lunges which I need to watch out for and correct. Also I was leaning forward on lunges instead of staying completely upright. Press-ups - my arms were too far forward (level with my head not under my shoulders). Oh and crunches - was taking Jillian's advice about looking up at the ceiling too literally - apparently you should be looking at where the ceiling meets the top of the wall, IYSWIM, not right up at the ceiling! Grin

Oh and PT had me using 3kg weights for some stuff e.g. chest flies - they are HEAVY! And we did loads with a swiss ball which was a good alternative to Jillian. Grin

knottyhair · 04/10/2011 10:29

I'm going to be very aware now of my "form"! Did 4 circuits of BFBM this morning, including my nemesis, circuit 6. HATE those standing mountain climbers - I have to count them down out loud to get through them Blush.

OP posts:
VenetiaLanyon · 04/10/2011 15:46

hello all, interesting stiff re form, Jackster; I think I'm guilty of most of those...

I think that I'm now officially shredded, having done it pretty much every day since April, but diet has gone for a burton, so am not losing anymore weight. Help! Need inspiration!

Welcome and congrats, Turkey and Imperfect!

threestepsforward · 04/10/2011 18:23

Evening all!

Managed to fit in a L1 Shred today with 1.5 kg weights during the cardio, that'll do me!

Venetia, well done you for getting through the Shred, hurrah Grin. I know exactly what you mean. I sort of hit a plateau and became quite demoralised, although I wasn't dieting. My body stopped changing so quickly and I lost my va va voom as a result. Do you need inspiration for the diet? Or for continued Jillian'ing? For the second answer: Burn Fat Boost Metabolism! Do you have it? It's a real corker of a workout and you'll feel great afterwards, depsite feeling like you want to die during it...

Knotty I hear you on those standing mountain climbers, they are vicious (sp?), as J would say!

Jackster that sounds like a really beneficial session with the PT. I'm definitely guilty of my arms being in the wrong place for the push ups, perhaps that's how I strained a muscle? I'm sure I am with the other things you mentioned too, but that was the one I recognised instantly.

Hello to everyone else Smile and welcome Turkey Smile, how's it going?

Hope everyone has a good evening

Jacksterbear · 04/10/2011 20:57

3steps I have just done a L1 shred too (2kg weights in the cardio) - have said this before but - every time I do L1 I expect it to be easy but F* ME it's hard work!!

Venetia I agree re varying the workouts - BFBM, NMTZ, or for a non-Jillian workout Tae Bo is great.

notyummy · 04/10/2011 21:04

I do tae bo too! Cant beat a bit of Billy Grin

knottyhair · 05/10/2011 09:37

Well done Venetia! For what it's worth, I used MFP as well as all things Jillian and have lost 2 stone 4lbs since Feb. I still use it to maintain my weight now, helps me feel in control. But you do have to be honest with yourself about what you put in your mouth! I'd also recommend Jillian's other DVDs. I've got all the ones available in the UK at the moment, and just rotate them so I don't get bored. I must get my Billy Blanks one out again - had a couple of attempts at it a while ago but wasn't that keen - I might like it more now.

Did a L2 Shred this morning and managed to use 3kg for everything except the bloody v raises - I think they're my least favourite move in all of Jillian's DVDs! Just can't get through them without grimacing and making weird noises, and there's no way I could go up from 2kg for them. And I never thought I'd say this but I really like double jump rope now. Think I need help Grin.

OP posts:
notyummy · 05/10/2011 09:50

Knotty - I also hate the pesky V raises. Am very short of time at the moment. Managed a 3.5 mile run yesterday at 6am, and am planning a L1 Shred tonight as I will only have 20 mins to spare- haven't done L1 for a while so change is good and all that... Will try with weights on all the cardio and as heavy a weights as I can handle for the strength section.

I think I have mentioned it before, but I really rate Billy Blanks Boot Camp as a great (hard!) work out. Tougher than any of his 'Tae Bo only' DVDs. It does have Tae Bo moves in it, but also lots of strength stuff....sooooo many press-ups and a killer abs section.

knottyhair · 05/10/2011 09:55

notyummy, how long is BB Boot Camp? I've only got the Tae Bo ones and I wasn't that keen. Also has the boot camp got that woman whooping all the way through Grin?
