Hi all!

Hope the title is ok - if not, someone else can do another one Grin

Does anybody know why, exactly,

(1)white bread is SO much worse than wholemeal in SW
and
(2) why bread is not good but pasta and potatoes are unlimited on green and orange?

it makes no sense to me that I can carb up with a plate heaped with pasta but two sliced of toast are so high in Syns.

Anybody know why?

Grinning bee, I was told by someone that if you cancel your membership online and then take a new one out you get it chaper than renewing as an existing member. Do not know how true that is mind you, I just joined 2 weeks ago!!

Cheeseandbiscuits · 23/08/2011 06:35

Is it a GI thing? Plus White bread is minging Grin

Had a bad day yesterday but hoping today will be better. My grandmas idea of a healthy dinner was fine until pudding: lamb casserole then rhubarb crumble!!!

grinningbee · 23/08/2011 07:44

Morning all.

It's my Dod today. Will weigh in soon, but am not expecting anything exciting.

Food for the day:

Weetabix and a nectarine
Chese triangles on toast, banana and a yogurt
Left over sweet chilli chicken with roasted veg

I'm stuck in the house today as no car, so it looks like it's a day of boring housework. Woohoo.

OP posts:
grinningbee · 23/08/2011 07:45

Oh, and rhubarb crumble is lovely! Did it come with custard too...

OP posts:
Riasdragonflytattoo · 23/08/2011 08:41

yum, crumble and custard.

I think it's to do with fibre content and "satiety" (is that even a word?). If I'm having a bad day it's not a good thing to think about it too much, as I can convince myself it's as "gimmicky" as many other dietsHmm, but it seems to work and is very popular

have found a compromise to my plan for my holiday, so have lots of sorting out and organising to do for the next couple of days (the worst bit is tidying so my parents can come in and feed the catWink. when DH stays home I don't have to bother!)

grinningbee · 23/08/2011 10:44

You're off on holiday too Ria. Hope you have a nice relaxing time Smile

I'll just set myself up here with some comfy cushions and a kettle while I wait for everyone to come back again.

Weigh in done. Nothing spectacular as I thought. Oh well. Going to get my breakfast now and think fat melting thoughts ready for next week! Hope the new mag lands soon as I need some inspiration for new recipes.

The way the weather is today I'm thinking slow cooker stews... yum.

Morning everyone, there is definitely some kind of weird alchemy to the SW diet. I did much better last time when I rigidly stuck to the one third superfree rule (I kinda missed it at first, even though it was in the book) but its very strange about the pasta, spuds and even fruit as its clearly not low-carb.

I am just hoping for a small loss this week after the curry.

Food
Toast, banana, honey
Omelette using HE cheese, fruit
Gammon, sw chips, tomatoes, mushrooms

SlinkyB · 23/08/2011 11:28

Morning all

I agree with what you've already said about the white bread Vs brown bread debate. Think it's a combination of G.I and fibre content. Also, personally, if I fill up on pasta it's with a healthy tomato-based sauce (though I miss pesto!) but if I get a couple of slices of bread, I'm always tempted to crack out the Nutella, peanut butter, jam or cheese - not so healthy! Toast is one of my old favourite snacks so I try to avoid it. Didn't succeed last night though, but it was one slice of hobbit bread with a Laughing Cow Extra Light triangle on...

wkft I cannot believe you didn't have a slice of your OWN birthday cake! That is some serious willpower you have there! I will be helping family members celebrate four birthdays this weekend (three separate 'do's') and not sure I'll be able to show that much restraint.

Therefore, I am doing my utmost to be saintly this week, so I can have a big blow-out on the weekend and not feel too guilty.

Made a giant quorn chilli last night, so will be eating that for the next ten day or so. Definitely comfort food weather :(

grinningbee · 23/08/2011 11:52

Ooooh slinky, you've just given me another recipe idea thank you Grin A quorn chilli would be nice. Do you mind sharing your recipe?

Agree re the alchemy. I'm still sticking to red and green days as I can't get my head around EE. I'm doing ok and so far haven't gained or maintained (that will change in a few weeks). I am missing my homemade bread though, and have stupidly promised to make some later this week for dh.

Right. Must go as I'm now feeling very peckish!

Afternoon Team...I volunteered to do the list for McCheese this week so remember to PM me your details whenever and I will fire the list off tomorrow evening.

I forget the 1/3 sometimes too Kungfu, oh and Slinky, ..nutella on toast was ALWAYS on the menu when you came back at silly o'clock in the morning from a night club back in my student days!!!Wink WHat is hobbit bread?

Riasdragonflytattoo · 23/08/2011 15:37

have made the decision that I am not faffing about cooking SW-friendly pasta bakes and stuff to take on holiday. Hopefully we will be able to mostly BBQ and have meat and salad. I intend to eat healthily and relax Smile

right now I could happily crawl under the sofa (if I would fit) and cry. Sodding hormones.

good luck with the DoD all.

SlinkyB · 23/08/2011 15:52

Pushka - it's just what I've heard it being called on here; pathetic, tiny little Warburtons wholemeal/half-loaf/Weight Watchers-type wee slices of bread :)

Bee I am not the most inventive or imaginative "cook", so it's just a quick basic chilli but happy to give you the recipe!

1 x tin chopped tomatoes
1/2 tube tomato puree
1 x tin kidney beans (I get the ones in chilli sauce for extra kick/saves draining)
1 x pack of quorn mince
1x red pepper + 1 x green pepper + 1 x onion
Mushrooms

Now, I will hold my hands up here and confess I've got lazy lately and just used a sachet of Schwartz Hot Chilli mix! (I think it works out cheaper, saves your fingers smelling of garlic/chilli, adds a nice colour, and saves time) but not sure of the syn value?! If you wanna do it properly add:

A few cloves of garlic
Chopped chillies
Seasoning
Worcestershire sauce

Bung the toms/puree/beans/quorn/sachet mix and a little water in a large pan, and stir.

Fry all the veggies (and the garlic/chilli peppers if you're not lazy like me) in fry lite in a separate pan, till softened.

Whack all the veggies in the big pan with all the other stuff and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding more water if needed.

Serve with brown rice or syn-free chips, or a bit of both if you're like me Grin

grinningbee · 23/08/2011 16:37

Yes, hobbit bread is the tiny slices from a 400g loaf rather than gorgeous doorsteps of homemade bread

Slinky bless your heart for posting that, thank you Smile. I shall make one this week I think.

Need to do the meal plan later. Think stew will be on it too - although dh supposedly doesn't like it...

OP posts:
LittlePushka · 23/08/2011 18:54

Hobbit bread...love it!! Presumably tis the Hobbits who eat 28g of cereal at any one sitting.... whilst the world at large spills more than that in the process of filling the breakfast bowl.

Ooooh, have noticed a very new sort of feeling (steady on girlsWink)...isnt it nice when you trouser button is not under quite as much tension as usual??!!

grinningbee · 23/08/2011 20:05

Because I am evil and slightly twisted Grin and we've been talking about bread on here today, I have put two pictures of my first bread making efforts on my profile.

Feel free to lick the screen GrinGrin

OP posts:
LittlePushka · 23/08/2011 21:11

Bee, that bread is SO cute Hey,..but I note that there is nothing with which the loaves can be scaled ...so we do not know if it is Hobbit Hedgehog bread or something heart stoppingly (though nevertheless managable) enormous!!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 23/08/2011 22:59

Hi - mind if I crash in? Just started back on SW - did it last year with DH for a few months, lost about 1/2 stone I think, but ditched it as I got fed up with all the list-making, shopping, chopping and cooking.
Plus most of the 1/2 st went straight back on once I got my nose in the buffet trough on holiday last summer Smile. So now I'm back from another summer holiday, not quite back to square one as I've lost about a stone over the last three years or so, but have been at this stage so many times since then - now I just want to make a last and final push and get shut of the last 10lbs or so.
I've bought the Food Optomising and the Free Foods books, but don't have a full syn register. D'you think I should join to get the full info?
I'm aiming to do the green/original days, avoiding sweet stuff as am addicted to sugar so lf yogurts are a no for me. Can't seem to keep away from the wine though!
Just had pork brochettes with cauliflower rice for tea; I'm quite thrilled to have discovered that as it makes the low carb original meals possible for me.
Oh, and I weigh myself twice a day - is that bad?!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 23/08/2011 23:00

Sorry I've realised I've just banged on Blush. will try and be more concise!

whatkungfuthat · 24/08/2011 08:34

Welcome WWWY My DP weighs himself twice a day and his weight is up and down like a yoyo. I try and restrict myself to every few days so I don't get despondent.

Riasdragonflytattoo · 24/08/2011 08:37

WWWY what is cauliflower rice? welcome to the thread.

The thing with hobbits and hobbit toast, is that they also have 2nd breakfast, elevenses etc (DS3 used to be called "baggins" when I was BF)

good luck with DOD.

other than that Grin for now!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 24/08/2011 08:57

Cauliflower rice. I came across it on one of the low carb threads here a while ago. I've always struggled with original days as my gallstones make no-carb meals a potential 4 hour gripe marathon. This definitely made it more achievable for me, and even DD (who hates rice) liked it.
You can also make a faux mashed spud with it - not tried that yet.

grinningbee · 24/08/2011 09:59

Morning all!

Welcome to WWWY Smile I weigh myself more than once a day (naughty me!) but I just can't seem not too.

Happy Dod Grin

Off to do the weekly food shop in a bit. Yay. Slinky I looked up that chilli mix and it's 5.5 syns for the whole packet, so not too bad if you're sharing Wink I've decided to give it a go today.

So, food for the day:

Weetabix and a nectarine
Beans on toast, apple and a yogurt
Quorn chilli with rice (dh will have chips - he is a chipaholic)

New problem here. My wedding and engagement rings are very loose. Trouble is the wedding ring has a pattern, so would look odd if altered.

OP posts:
Cheeseandbiscuits · 24/08/2011 10:06

Good luck today one and all. Welcome to WW.

Luckily there isn't scales here at GrandmasGrin. Bacon sarnies for breakfast...there are 2 untouched sponge cakes though!

DD started commando crawling Sad

Good luck today

SlinkyB · 24/08/2011 10:39

Welcome WWWY, and good luck for the DoD today everyone! I confess I usually weigh myself a couple of times a week, dp is every day though! He's getting to the stage where he'll need to start putting weight on though Envy

bee that bread looked divine, and hope you enjoy the chilli - thanks for looking up syn value, I usually get around six portions out of it so that's ok.

Pushka will pm you my stats later when I've put laptop on.

grinningbee · 24/08/2011 10:41

Oi Cheese you're meant to be on holiday Wink Yay for dd crawling. It's funny, you'd think having been through the crawling phase before I'd have been ready for it, but now ds is properly at warp speed.. OMG. And he is into everything Grin

How is bonny Scotland? Last time I was up there I went to Aviemore. Lovely place.
