Is down, as in weight! Good luck to us all!

My Dh is a GP and I understand from him that Orlistat can be a fairly unpleasant if you do eat too much fat because it just comes out undigested IYSWIM. And I think you have to show that you have been trying to lose weight properly already which you have.

It is frustrating - I think your body just adapts to the lower calories and then the weight loss slows down. I know the Helen Forster plan is supposed to reduce calories AND you are not supposed to need count calories , but have you a rough idea of how many calories you do eat in a day? Could there be anything you are doing that is adding on those few extra - probably not that many at this stage to have an effect?

I feel similar - I exercise four times a week, walk up and down to school twice or more a day plus I am on a diet - the weight should be falling off . And I know it would if I had just started a diet + exercise after not having done it before. But it's like that's normal for my body now and it's got more efficient.

hope you can get some answers Melbob, you've done well not to throw in the towel after the last few weeks.

melbob · 21/11/2005 21:21

I think lipotrim is one of those food supplement things from what BF said its definitely not Orlistat which another friend had and is yuck.

Saker · 21/11/2005 21:24

Btw Puff did you find that those glycine supplements made any difference to you?

puff · 22/11/2005 08:42

Not noticeably I must admit

My other thought melbob was perhaps you could look into getting tested for food intolerances. Only drawback is it isn't particularly cheap! There's a v reputable company called (I think) York Testing who will do it with a pinprick blood sample.

melbob · 22/11/2005 22:19

Ok I have a plan. I am going to reduce my carbs particulalry wheat based ones a bit and see if that helps. i am going to try and get some exercise but its a struggle given my work/family schedule however every little helps.

Thanks for suggestions had food intolerance tests some years ago but only came up with prawns and strawberries! Grumpy frumpy haven't measured inches but am not really exercising so doubt very very much whether I have lost any inches

puff · 22/11/2005 22:35

Sounds good melbob - this is basically what I did and it seemed to kickstart things again.

I know what you mean about trying to fit in exercise when you have so many commitments. Maybe just a conscious effort to do say more walking would be enough to reap some benefits.

Am keeping everything crossed for you and think you are doing so well hanging in there.

My last thought - I wonder how different the GL diet is to the GI diet? The idea seems to be the same, though I don't know any detail about it. I've been wondering about trying it just for a change .

I have been looking into the GL idea a bit more. It is basically what we are doing as we have been controlling portions of pasta etc but it does give a bit more freedom with fruit and veg. I have been dutifully following Rick Gallup's recommendation not to eat bananas, mango, apricots that sort of thing but they all have pretty low GL values vs GI so would be alright. Even rice and mashed potato isn't too bad in small amounts though I suppose you have to take into account what else you are eating at that meal.

Anyway found this site which has a good list of GI and GL values plus portion sizes and also an interesting article on the satiety index about which foods make you feel full.

puff · 24/11/2005 15:42

that site is interesting> I like chana dal, so will definitely buy some and try some recipes. Also, I like the idea of being able to introduce more potatoes, because restricting wheat as I have been rules out pasta.

There are a couple of specific GL diet books on Amazon - might buy one.

Made AWT tomato, bean and pasta soup very quick and tasty. DH and DS enjoyed it too although DS insisted on using his hands to at it, lovely!

puff · 27/11/2005 17:59

yum - love the AWT book, all the recipes are so good.

How's everyone doing this week?

I think I've had a better week - hoping to have lost the 2lb I aimed for - crossed fingers for tomorrow!

have tried cutting down carbs and hopefully that will pay off. However, went to my Mum's for lucn and she had made pork casserole with carrots, sprouts and mash followed by blackcurrant steam pudding and custard! I only had dessert spoon of mash and 2cm slice of pud. Its easier to say thank you than deal with the discussion about diet.

Saker · 27/11/2005 20:45

It's always a problem when someone has cooked for you (especially when it's yummy.) Sounds like you got the best compromise Melbob.
I made the AWT pork casserole for the first time on Friday - also really good.

Good luck for tomorrow everyone!

puff · 27/11/2005 21:40

Melbob - that was very restrained when offered all that yummy food!

OP posts:
puff · 28/11/2005 08:34

Lost 1.5 lbs this week. not the 2 I was aiming for, but still ok.

Have lost 8lbs since the start of the thread I think.

Not sure I'll crack another 6lbs before Christmas, it would be nice to though.

OP posts:
suzywong · 28/11/2005 09:09

what's AWT?

puff · 28/11/2005 09:46

It's a GI recipe book by Anthony Worral Thompson

OP posts:
suzywong · 28/11/2005 09:50

ooooohhhhhh....wonder if we can get that here? Maybe I'll ask Amazon. Do you really recommend it? Has it shifted any of his gnomic pounds?

puff · 28/11/2005 09:55

It is a good book, plenty of recipes for the whole family to enjoy.

He did lose weight using them, no idea whether he kept the weight off, but that's another story.

I've lost over 7 stone now and use this book regularly.
