So today is D day! Diet starts today, I have my first slimming world class tonight and i am feeling quite motivated. I think I probably have around 3 stones to lose, but i would be happy to even lose 2. I just feel fat and unhealthy and have never been this big before!

So today is day 1 of sorting myself out! Just wondered if anyone else was starting today too, not just slimming world, but any thing, and wanted to have somewhere to chat, swap ideas, or get some moral support?

I didn't have tomato or fruit this morning, i was a bit shell shocked at producing a hot breakfast at 7 am Grin
just done a big shop, lots of fruit & veg which i would normally buy plus tinned beans of all kinds, going to make some minestrone from teh book (without the ham ) got some quorn sausages to snack on and a soy bean salad.

i think the key for me is going to be cooking in batches and making sure that when i open the fridge there is something syn free and filling for me

going to make a chicken and veg pasta salad for lunch for work this week

if i use fry light for the chicken, is it a syn?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 14/09/2010 12:34

Pixie, eat your syns, it's part of the plan ! They do say you should have at least 5 a day and there are people all over the internet who swear they don't lose if they don't have any, not sure how true that is.

Lulumaam, fully understand the shock of cooking at that time and never manage it myself! Maybe try to have some extra fruit today so that your whole day's intake is a third of the superfree stuff, it will get you off to a good start. Frylight is free so spray away.

I've just seen a thread on slowcookers which has made me think that it's time to make more use of mine and get going on the stews a bit more.

Lulumaam · 14/09/2010 12:50

i don't understand how i can eat as much pasta and noodles and rice as i want, but limited bread?

am making chicken pasta salad to take to work.. marinated chicken in rice vinegar and soy sauce , going to griddle it, and mix with cooled boiled pasta and some sugar snap peas.

making the free minestrone without ham at the mo for lunch

just had a green salad!

Hi just checking in, well done to everyone on the weight losses this week.

I am sitting at my desk eating (microwaved) baked patato and baked beans - it was all I could face this morning between driving DH to station, coming home and chivvying the DC to get ready for school, and then getting all of us out for 8.15.
Our consultant gave some really good advice - don't go to bed until you know what you will be eating the next day, ..... but I haven't managed to follow it yet Blush

Hope everyone is doing well today, don't you think the wet weather makes you feel more hungry??

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 14/09/2010 15:57

Lulumaam, read this, it might help a little in explaining it.

izzybiz · 14/09/2010 16:25

Hi guys, mind if I join?

I started SW on the 4th Sept, and in my first week lost 4.5lbs. I want to lose nearly 5 stone in total but my first target is my 10%.
I am aiming to lose at least 2.5lbs this week to get my first half stone!

I have been doing more red days than anything else as I find meat more filling, I tried an extra easy day yesterday which was good but I found only having 1 healthy extra from each group tricky!

I had cereal and milk for breakfast, tuna and pasta for lunch and low fat sausages with mash and beans for dinner.

I'm eating lots of muller lights and fruit too!

I was very pleased with myself this morning as I went into Macdonalds at breakfast time and just had a diet coke! I love their breakfast! Blush

Good luck for everyone this week!

Lulumaam · 14/09/2010 16:53

thanks wynken , will have a proper read when i'm back from work

Smile

we're having jacket potatoes tonight, i'm having 200g of cottage cheese with mine - it's 1 syn, as it's not fat free, but could not find fat free in the supermarket. also having some backed beans with it for extra fillingness

i feel like all i have done is eat today

have had several pieces of fruit and veg too.

have frozen some of hte soup i made earlier for another day.

made my lunch for tomorrow

it's been the foodiest day i've had for ages

need to stop obsessing about what syn to have after work.. maybe a crunchie !!

ElizabethWakefield · 14/09/2010 16:55

I was told last night that you should always have your syns. My consultant actually said that's why she thought i didn't really lose anything this week as I didn't have enough.

She said it is a 3 step eating plan and the syns were step 3 and if you cut them out then you are not following the plan properly and can't expect to lose. So i will try to really use them up this week.

I just find that if i eat mostly free food i can have quite a lot left at the end of the day and not really feel hungry, so to eat something for the sake of it just to use up syns, seems wrong, as one of my bad habbits is just eating through boredom when i am not hungry, so i don't really want to do that. So i thought if i have syns left at the end of the day this week that i would try even having a glass of fruit juice at night, if i am not hungry, as that doesn't seem as bad as eating a bar of chocolate or something if i am not hungry.

Will see how it goes anyway!

Well done on everyone's losses! And Wynken, I hope I follow your lead and lose a decent amount next week Smile

I have also been thinking I should use my slow cooker, but I am always terrified i will burn my house down with it while i am at work Blush

OP posts:
Lulumaam · 14/09/2010 17:19

slow cooker is fantastic, the house burning down fear is one i had.. but i got over it Grin i think having something ready to eat when you get home stops you reaching for the biccies immediately.

off to work in a mo, taking a bag of pears with me!

ditavonteesed · 14/09/2010 18:11

I have had z really good day, ujust had my dinner and still felt hungry so instead of eating the bagel i fancied I went to the shop to buy a mulerlight, instead found the new activa fat free yoghurts, should be 79p were 5 for £1 (co-op if anyone interested) by the time I have got back I am not hungry at all, takes far to long for me to realise I am full so I carry on eating long after I should have stopped.

Lulumaam · 14/09/2010 20:49

am having my 175 ml glass of wine now ! Grin

AngryPixie · 14/09/2010 21:38

izzybiz 4.5lbs in your first week is amazing, which plan are you doing? I will be disappointed if I haven't lost 2-3lbs this week, but you never know until you are actually on those scales.

Good luck everyone.

AngryPixie · 14/09/2010 21:39

OOps sorry - just seen mostly red, me too, but that's because I am deeply suspicious that you can eat that many carbs and still lose weight on extra easy!

upsydaisysexstylist · 14/09/2010 21:40

weigh in day and a bad day for sticking to the plan. Lost 1lb this week so ok, but know I've stuck to the letter and not the spirit of the plan, this week I am going to stick to the 1/3 superfree at each meal.

Found syning on white bread v bad for my energy levels. Will be niping into coop for yoghurts tomorrow, thanks for tip

moocowmrs · 14/09/2010 21:55

Can I join too please, just completed first week and lost 2.5lb I am doing mainly extra easy days as these fit in better with family life, at the moment I am trying to work the meals that we normally have into free ones and fill up on fruit. But finding it tricky not to have bread at lunch and cereal for breakfast, the 1 b choice issue really.

Lunches are tricky here as got toddler, and a husband who works from home doing very manual job who is starving at lunch time, So far soup is the winner but other ideas very welcome.

Have fallen off the wagon tonight now and will start again in the morning.

Riadingbetweenthelines · 14/09/2010 22:12

starting again in the morning for me tooBlush. Need to shop again and had a naughty treat for lunchBlush as it's been a non-starter sort of day after a night of mostly wakefulness last night, and several child tantrums. Have done nearly 2 hours of dance class and a 5.5 mile walk though. I think I deserve my wine!

DontCallMeBaby · 14/09/2010 22:44

Can I join? I've just come back from my second class, having lost 4lb in my first week. Yay! I'm doing extra easy with waaay too many syns on all bar one day. Oops. But I do think it needs a dollop of common sense - I had an Innocent vegetable dhal last week that was allegedly about 10 syns despite the only non-free ingredient being coconut sugar, while yesterday I was on my way to have some ham as a 'free' snack in the evening before reminding myself that ham is NOT calorie-free. :o

I have eaten SO much more healthily than normal though, and so much less.

Lulumaam · 15/09/2010 20:04

I have had a good day in terms of eating the right stuff, got enough syns left for wine or some biscuits. but am ferociously hungry and i think all the extra fruit and veg is giving me stomach pains !

had massive syn free fry up for supper - sauted potatoes, quorn sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes , all in fry light... very filling !

got some cold sausage and potato to take to work for lunch tomorrow

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 15/09/2010 20:08

How's everyone doing today? My slowcooker did something other than spag bol today. I did a River Cottage recipe with pork instead of beef and I didn't stick very faithfully to the quantities as I was doing it for just DD and myself. 250ml apple juice worked out at 2.5 syns each and a syn for the redcurrants jelly. Had it with jacket spud, carrot and broccoli. Was really lovely and so easy to do as apart from browning meat you just chuck it in.

Weigh in tomorrow. According to the wii I have stayed the same which is annoying but I don't lose equally over the month and have lost the last two weeks. Chocolate cravings are currently at a peak.

Lulumaam · 15/09/2010 20:25

that sounds gorgeous !

i'm just having my glass of wine ( 6 syns) and my 28g of cheese ( healthy extra a) !!

Fimbles5 · 15/09/2010 20:26

Is it possible to eat too much fruit??? Until I started slimming world I wasn't a fruit fan, now it seems to have taken over my life. I have an apple at 10am ish, raspberries and blueberries for lunch, more for dessert at tea and then another apple at 8pm ish. Is this OK?? Its costing me a fortune - I would welcome other snack/dessert ideas. Also, could someone please explain the following: If you are allowed one slice of wholemeal bread free or 2 x alpen light bars free for option b - how come if you choose the bread option (4syns) and eat it as a free choice and then count one alpen light bar this is (4.5syns) according to the book. Does this make sense to anyone (don't think I've explained it particularly well).

Lulumaam · 15/09/2010 20:53

no idea re teh bread/alpen thingy

i buy fruit from lidl or asda.it is cheaper. also local greengrocer

soft fruit is pricier.. i prefer apples & pears taht have been in the fridge so really cold and crunchy

melon half filled with soft fruit with fat free yoghurt or fromage frais on it would be good, no?

bananas and yoghurt with a teaspoon of honey on top ( 1 syn for honey )

as far as i can tell, all fresh and frozen fruit and veg is free.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 15/09/2010 21:07

Wine and cheese sounds very civilised!

Not sure of the answer on fruit. I know some people find bananas and grapes can slow their loss. Melon and strawberries are superspeed and supposed to help you lose faster. I know where you are coming from on the cost, our shopping bill has shot up with all the fruit. Lidl have Somerset strawberries for a pound a punnet, funsize apples for 50p a pack and lovely small plum tomatoes for 50p a pack. I'm going to try to snack on tomatoes as well as fruit and maybe some Muller light.

I think I understand what you are saying with the bread . One healthy extra of wholemeal bread is more than one slice of a large medium loaf and is 6 syns worth. The Alpen light were 3 syns each, if they are more now they've changed them. So 2 is 6 syns as this is what the syn value of the healthy extras are. So if you are out and buy a wholemeal sandwhich, you can take 6 syns off for your healthy extra- though it is depressing how high in syns a shop bought sandwich is.

I hope I've understood what you meant and what I've said makes some sense.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 15/09/2010 21:16

Just looked on the website. Alpen lights are still 3. A slice of a 400g Hovis wholemeal loaf (ie. The small one) is 3 syns, you get 2 slices for your Healthy Extra or 56g (I think) of any wholemeal bread. So you would need to weigh it if using a large loaf to get the right amount.

Riadingbetweenthelines · 16/09/2010 00:43

bread is a bit of a grey areas I think - I remember when I used to go to class some one had weighed 2 slices morrisons stoneground wholemeal, and it came in at the same weight as 2 slices of wholemeal from a small loaf (HEB), but it is a big loaf (are you following this?) and the consultant said only allowed 1 slice as a big loaf resppite what weight saidHmm. Is 3 slices nimble still a HEB? And are Alpen light still a HE? (was considering giving up breadShock)

Dug out my slow cooker today. Not impressed at trimming fat from cheap stewing steak at 7.30am. Was meant to be the beef casserole from the mag, but improvised with the veg, and added the pulses I had soaked for the broth that never got made. Think it is a bit herby and not nearly thick enough gravy. Hopefully the flavour will be better tomrrow and I might sacrifice some syns to thicken it! (kids a bit gutted at lack of dumplings!)
