On holiday and struggling somewhat with the breakfast buffet here. Any words of wisdom?
I always find them tricky even though this hotel isn't the most brilliant for food and at home I often don't even eat breakfast. But I still end up eating too much! I'm trying to stick to the coffee, fruit and eggs.

It doesn't help that my kids are all over the doughnuts and pastries, and one of them is getting quite overweight so I'm also trying to sensitively stop him from over-eating. Which is hard! He's 10 and (almost certainly) has ADHD and just doesn't have that internal 'stop' trigger that my other kid seems to have, even though he's aware his clothes are getting tight and has asked me to help him be healthier. Argh. Advice welcome.

random223 · 16/02/2026 10:57

I really struggle with buffets! I would avoid the fruit or any carbs if possible - and just eat eggs. Particularly if they do an omelette.

Oceangrey · 16/02/2026 11:01

Yep it's now 11am, I had breakfast at 9am, and I'm hungry! I had an omelette, fruit and a mini pastry and lots of coffee so I really shouldn't be.

Could you add a bit more protein to your breakfast maybe? Such as some bacon or sausage? I think you’re on holiday, so give yourself a bit of a break! Almost certainly the mini pastry will have spiked your blood sugar and is the culprit for making you feel hungry. However, you are on holiday! In the main, you are on the right track, focusing on eggs and protein. I also struggle with the fact that I’ve paid for breakfast so I’ll want to eat it even though I don’t eat breakfast at home…😂

I think this is the sensitive topic for any parent.… However, 10 is an appropriate age to understand about expending energy and consuming it. That said, I’d imagine on holiday there is lots of swimming/running about to do so I wouldn’t overly think it unless he is particularly sedentary at home? In which case, could you try and find some form of activity that he would enjoy doing? Maybe together?

We have the M&S Beef Wellington too! Along with the scallops starter and cremant. Some decadence for the weekend 💃

Happy Friday everyone!

I’ve not lost anything this week but after super whoosh week last week I’m still more than happy (seems to be my body’s way!). Still got the lurgy clinging on which is a pain (had to cancel my Pilates classes this week). Thanks for the tip re ginger shots - I’ve got some ready made ones I’ve been having (moju) but home made is a good shout. I should probably dig out my juicer!

How did you rate the beef Wellington‘s? They’re not like the ones they used to do are they? Still it was nice not to have to cook!

No change this week but like @Goldleafcat that's ok after a lovely woosh last week. 12 stone something feels amazingly close now. I tried on some size 14 skirts from my 2013 wardrobe this week and they're a bit too snug to wear comfortably, but they do fit. I really thought I was kidding myself holding onto those 'in case' so feel very vindicated! My new 34DD bras arrived and my cup size measuring was off, but not by too much so I'll just suffer four boobs for a bit.

Love a good back of the wardrobe find! Well done STS this week 👏

I hit 78kg dead on this morning. 3kg away from my holiday goal weight which is 5 weeks away. Though to be honest if I hit 75.9 it will totally count 😂😂

I tried a ginger shot this week, on Ocado flash sale. I thought it was going to burn my throat and stomach from the inside out. Vile.Love ginger things usually. Will tip the second into a stir fry.

lol at the ginger hate, I love them! 3 kg in five weeks is totally doable 💪

It's a skirt that's been hiding under my bed with other size 14s for over a decade! A black fit and flare type mini. Some of the others only fit if I don't breathe but hopefully will in the next couple of months.
I know there are people fitting size 6s on here but that's never been and never will be me. My hips hit a 12 in my mid teens and I was an 8 (because 6s didn't exist then!) in adult leggings as a 9 year old because I had very long legs but not the adult hips that anything other than leggings worked. So this is me starting to get near my end goal wardrobe, even with nearly two stone to go.
How are folks finding getting rid of their fat wardrobe? I've gone through this enough times that I've done the whole 'never again, begone!' and then regretted having to buy at that size again when I regained. I don't know if I have enough faith yet to be ruthless but I also don't have the space to keep everything just in case.

I’ve decided that I’m gonna go for it and throw away all of my fat clothes… I think I posted an article maybe up thread or on the last one where an expert had said that by retaining bigger size clothes you are setting yourself up for failure. Now we have the tools to be able to keep weight off successfully there really is no need for me to keep them plus, in no time at all there will be no one left to buy them on Vinted 😳

It’s the pastry and the fruit sugar spikes imho. At buffet breakfasts I now just stick to eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes mix and herbal tea thing. I then have coffee mid morning with an apple or something.

I did a lot of people watching at hotel buffets last year just looking at who takes what and what size they are. I wanted to be one of those people who can ‘fuel up’ for a busy day and then not eat anything other than a piece of fruit/cake until 6pm - MJ thank you 🙏🏻 (obviously my main focus was women with my sort of profile - not teenage boys who seem to be able to hoover up mountains of food.). It was flipping hard to ignore desserts at dinner etc but I did and that became a habit.

eating is tricky on holiday but last year I made sure I did lots of walking/swimming to keep my mind off food. But being an older person I didn’t have little ones to worry about other than Mr Pumpkin who can quite happily eat the whole selection.

Let today go @Oceangrey then reset tomorrow.

Why not get your DD to go to the buffet with you to help you with your selection? You could say mummy can’t have a big pastry because … etc That way you are not talking about him but you IYSWIM

remember to enjoy your holiday ❤️

Oceangrey · 16/02/2026 13:23

Yeah, protein is good. I don't eat pork though and normally I'd eat yogurt but this place doesn't have any! The fruit is actually amazing though so I'm eating that in spite of the sugar.

While I'm usually more relaxed about what my kids eat, my son will go for pastries, plus a doughnut, plus large omelette, plus fruit, then some cereal, then a pancake with Nutella, then... Etc. no off switch really and then often there's pizza and/or chips included in meals later in the day. So no matter the amount of swimming/walking it's too much. This is just a few days but we will have 2 weeks half board away this summer so I'm trying to get him into better habits for then. It's so hard though as I'm sure we all recognise that it's got to come from within rather than from external pressure, and if all of us struggle with willpower around food (unless on MJ), what hope does a 10yr old have?!

At home his food is ok as we cook pretty well but take him to a party and he can't leave the crisps and cake alone... It's difficult for someone like him, living in a world surrounded by many opportunities for delicious food.

What were your conclusions from your buffet observations?

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 16/02/2026 13:42

@Oceangrey Some people have lucky genetics and can eat plenty. I am very jealous of that sort of person.

However it was noticeable that more slender females of a certain age were a lot more selective and more careful with portion sizes. They all said things like ‘it’s so hard to be careful with all this choice’ so I then knew they had an interest in watching their weight - as I will be forever. They didn’t pile up the plate but it wasn’t empty either. I modelled my behaviour on them so chose similar options. So maybe a max of two trips up to buffet and noticeably often on once. They didn’t do fruit/cereal then hot then pastry/toast 3 course type thing. So I ended up going once for hot food or yogurt & fruit/seed mix and then a second time for an apple or banana to eat later.

However when they had a glass of fizz at breakfast later in the week - so did I 😁.

random223 · 16/02/2026 13:42

Can you explain to him about sugar spikes and how they just make us feel more hungry?

flametrees · 16/02/2026 14:43

I’m the opposite with a buffet it just puts me off. I see people touching the food and the idea of the germs gets to me. One of my kids has pretty severe ocd and we would never go to a buffet as he just couldn’t be around the open plates of food.
I found three of mine gained weight when puberty hit and then lost it again once they got to 13. It’s a tricky time. On holidays I’d ignore but in general at home just don’t have the high calorie foods available.

I’ve stopped losing weight now. I’m sitting at 8 11. I was not worried that I was getting too thin but I feel like it’s balancing out a bit.

when I go shopping I end up bringing in three sizes and starting with the biggest one. I cannot believe that a size small fits. I have a small enough frame so it was all fat with me. No excuse of wider hips. Just fat.

jay55 · 17/02/2026 13:22

Happy Pancake day. I had two for brunch. And felt stuffed and laughed at myself. I hope I never become like an ex smoker agog at people’s appetites, but being full after a normal or small meal still surprises me and gives me joy.

Saw a brief glimpse of 77 on the scale at the weekend but it’s been firmly 78 since.

I don’t think I’m ever going to see 8st 11.. and to think I thought that weight was ‘enormous’ when I was 17… 😩 youth is definitely wasted on the young 😂

Great job stabilising and on the teeny dress sizes! 💪

I think we’ve all been there with kids that do this. DH definitely has the ‘Labrador gene’ so has no stop sign. Absolutely futile trying to get kids to model good behaviour when he’s around. Is your other half on the same page as you? How has the rest of the week been so far? Hope you’re enjoying yourself, the weather is filthy here 😭

Happy Pancake Day recovery everyone! My kids made our pancakes so while I did indulge, I was able to restrict myself to just plain lemon & sugar - almost austere with all the Nutella flying around the rest of the family!

Hope you’re all having a lovely week. Between Valentine’s Day with the husband (lovely surf & turf at home) and pancake day this week I feel like I’ve eaten more than usual. Steeling myself up to step on the scales tomorrow!

Morning all, there was an interesting program on R4 this week about WLI and side effects. It’s called ‘Inside Health’ and lasts 28mins. Worth a listen on a dog walk etc.

OP posts:
Goldleafcat · 19/02/2026 18:44

Hi all! The scales haven’t been as kind to me this week (gained a couple of pounds) but my period has arrived so am hoping it’s water weight. This weather has been driving me batty and I’ve been having the mixed pleasure of finding things don’t fit me anymore (mixed because I’m also getting annoyed) and I’ve been struggling to find jeans that actually fit properly (14s too big, size 12 often too tight, yet weirdly a pair of Reiss trousers in a 10 are fine, etc) (also at least good news the coat I coveted has finally arrived and the 6 was correct! I also still have a size 16 Monsoon coat where the sizing was equally bonkers as that fits perfectly).

Work is busy and I’m clearly in a bit of a grump so hoping I’ll be a happier creature next week 🤭

Anyone seen / thought about the Ziip Halo? Wondering whether to splurge when I get my bonus (half of which I’ve already probably blown on my recent clothing purchases!).
