Big price increases?

Anyone else seen this chatter about massive price increases announced for MJ (to pharmacies) in the last hour or so?

Very concerning as it looks like it could double the cost of some of the doses. I'll try to find the copy of the letter sent out...

I think you’ll be hard pressed - a lot of them have a solid no to prescribing with a BMI under 30. Hira does seem to think she’ll be able to prescribe wegovy to those who have been on MJ before. So maybe message their customer service in a few days? She did say they won’t have the answers yet, so I’d just stock up for now and see where you end up.

The only ones who don’t allow swapping to them under bmi 30 that I’ve heard of are Medexpress and Zava. The vast majority of providers just ask for evidence of your previous prescription (photo of the box label with name, date and strength) then allow you to order same strength or one step up. I’ve swapped 4 times to different providers at a bmi between 25-30 to take advantage of new customer codes. A few extra questionnaires and photos has saved hundreds of £s.

I’ve just got my BMI under 30 and have been with Oushk since Nov 24 and whilst they’ve been pricey I haven’t wanted to be bothered to shop around.

What do you all think the chances of switching to a new supplier will be as the prices go up and more people shop around? £330 a month with Oushk is prohibitive

I’ve not had a problem switching with a bmi under 30, You just send proof that you are already being prescribed the medication and what dose along with all the other information when switching supplier.

I’ve never had 2 pens from the same supplier and my BMI is now 24 something. As long as you can provide proof of your last prescription most
companies will prescribe.

Sorry. Completely misread that and for some reason I thought Brunch was wanting to switch to wegovy?! Looks like a coffee is needed for me 🤦🏼‍♀️

I wonder whether some pharmacies will offset the cost hike by bringing the price of the lower doses up instead of putting the higher doses up too much? That looks to me rather like what Boots have done.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 15/08/2025 07:44

Wow! Boots have always been one of the more expensive ones, but that’s shocking

The 12.5 price isn't to bad compared to others but they are increasing the lower doses to compensate that.

Yes Iv heard this, Iv also heard that some wont increase lower doses but will higher doses so opposite way arounds.

Oushk (Hira) verbally said they are thinking 2.5mg will be around £150-160 and 15mg will be around £320-330 but stressed this was still to be confirmed when they have negotiate with Lily

it seems Oushk has gone in with higher guesstimates from the outset and I’m wondering if they’re usually at the top end of costs anyway.

They're often said to be one of the more expensive but, personally, I've never understood that. Whenever I've priced checked againt 'the list' they've typically been around 6-8th down the list from cheapest to most expensive - so it's never seemed that bad to me. Not worth swapping to save £15-25ish on a pen.

But their quote of £320/30 is far higher that Medicine Marketplace's quote of £275ish for the 15mg. At that difference, I may have to move...

It does, doesn’t it? If their higher doses stay like that I’ll consider switching to them for a while. I have a boots pharmacy in my town and the points are a huge draw! I think they’ll all be scrambling to announce pricing over the next few days. I’m going to keep an eye on the Oushk facebook and go from there.

The problem with that is it makes it harder for them to get new customers in. It makes more business sense to put the higher doses up more because once you’re using it you’re more likely to pay.

Those Boots prices shared are today’s prices, not what they will be in September. Lots of companies have pulled codes and prices matching since the news which is annoying but understandable to manage demand and limit new customers if they are struggling. But only a few like Boots have changed their base prices immediately which seems very unfair for their existing customers just needing next pen and taking advantage as they haven’t already paid more for these pens.

I really doubt it. They might decide to take lower margins on the higher doses but they won’t subsidise them from lower. It wouldn’t make sense as a business.

But conversely, it means those of us on the higher doses will switch across. So they have to work it out. I’m sure every pharmacy has people scrambling to work out what exactly they can do to make sure they secure their customer base. While those of us online are happy to switch around, I know plenty of people who aren’t and will just stick with the pharmacy they started with, so it’s a bit of a balancing act

No reason why not - I switched to Simple Online Pharmacy with a BMI under 30 and I’m about to switch again with a BMI of 23. There will still be supply (once the understandable panic buying is over) and pharmacies will still need new customers.

Really appreciate your research, I struggle to pay for my 5mg dose, so terribly disappointed this has happened as I doubt I can afford to keep purchasing.

Shmoigel · 15/08/2025 08:41

I have been at it for 14 months and I have lost 6 stone and I have maintained at 8 stone 10 for 3 months (I am 5 ft tall) This has been a life changer for me and I had accepted I would be on it for the foreseeable!

I feel crushed! We cant justify the increased cost. It was helping massively with my endometriosis as well! It seems to reduce the swelling and stop the cravings for sugar.

They have expiry dates, as long as the cold chain has not been broken then they should last up to their expiry date unopened.

As an aside.

American pricing models for those upthread - have a look into Pharmacy Benefit Managers. They set the pricing and availability between the insurance companies and the patients.

However, a lot are also owned by the insurance companies. So they set the prices and pay themselves. The more you read about it, the more you realise how much of a con US healthcare is.

Hopefully this (and all the other medications this will affect) will open peoples eyes to what will happen if we get rid of the NHS!

It’s been a con for years, and this is no different it won’t reduce American prices because of their insurance companies profiteering. But all the hype around this being the orange one’s fault will make him look good to his ardent followers. And that’s all he cares about.

I’m in Australia, no price increases that I’ve heard of yet, for 7.5 its $589 or £282 a month. Even with the golden dose it’s a massive cost. Is the UK similar price wise? I think the cheapest way was to pay for the biggest pen and micro dose it, but actually forking out that money, it’s really not obtainable.

No it’s been much cheaper here, I’ve just paid £135 for a 10mg pen and before that I paid £115 for a 10mg.

It seems it will likely be more similar to you now but it depends on commercial agreements etc.
