Anyone interested in a new thread for those of us taking the plunge this month?

There's this thread already:

Gearing up for a JANUARY start! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight-loss-injections/5234161-gearing-up-for-a-january-start

Sebsaloysius · 02/01/2025 12:07

Apologies if an additional thread isn't needed, but as the other thread has a lot of posters who are thinking of starting but haven't done so, I wondered if a new one with people who have just started would be a good idea.

Started today. It’s fine to have multiple threads , I think smaller groups may work well for some . I was in a weight loss chat group over a year ago and the support from a manageable number of posters was great . I can’t find the group now ( I would love to know how they are all doing ) x

I am back again as despite a fantastic 4 stone weight in 2023 ( 3 stone with saxander , last stone without ) a year later on and put on 18 pounds very quickly between August and December 2024 So time to refocus before my weight gets out of hand .

Mounjaro this time. Too early to comment on how I feel other than , not sick at all .

Souredgrapes · 03/01/2025 06:26

Morning . How did you both find yesterday ?

Usernamesarenoteasy · 03/01/2025 06:32

I took my first jab yesterday. Was really nervous, but it was ok.
Felt very strange afterwards, but think that was more the nerves than anything to do with the mj.
Feel fine this morning, Slept badly, but that's normal.
Was calorie counting yesterday before I took the injection last night, and felt like it was a good day. I had just under 1200 calories.

Axalotllittle · 03/01/2025 06:33

I'm starting mj this month. I've just done a stint on wegovy and have lost 2.5 stone. 2.5 more to go so I fancied changing it up.

Looking forward to them arriving!

penguinbiscuits · 03/01/2025 07:04

I have consultation for ozempic (not in the uk) next week.
Nervous but seeing people's results have made me finally got for it.
I am ready. So ready.

TinglyandCurious · 03/01/2025 13:55

Hi, I was on the other January thread but so busy I thought I’d pop on here. Good luck everyone 🙂

I took my first dose on Wednesday night. Very low appetite today but not sure if a placebo effect. Taking it gently and eating small amounts regularly as want to lose slowly but steadily (and not lose muscle mass etc.) Goal is to lose 4-5 stone if possible.

Souredgrapes · 03/01/2025 15:15

I’m wondering about placebo effect as I have literally gone from mindlessly stuffing things in my mouth to not bothered about food. Not even tempted by the mountain of biscuits in the staff room . I am hoping this is the MJ tho’ . I did really well on saxander, not only did it stifle the food chatter it seemed to stifle Alcohol cravings ( wine ) too .

TinglyandCurious · 03/01/2025 18:11

@Souredgrapes its such a new feeling isn’t it. You responded so well to saxander that surely mounjaro will offer the same 🙂 My appetite suppression is quite mild but it’s only day 2 of the first dose. It’s stopping me eating but I am using will power too as I think I could override it if I wanted. Does that make sense? Am hoping it will get a bit stronger as time goes on or when I go up a dose. Important for will power to be a factor in this too though I guess and I don’t want to not want to eat at all.

I'm the opposite, I had my first jaffa last night and had good suppression today. From 8am-5pm all I had was a banana. I knew at dinner I had to eat so had a tuna jacket with salad but could of easily had nothing. Long may it continue

Souredgrapes · 03/01/2025 18:22

If anyone would like to post what they are eating , I would be interested . I’m keeping a food diary on my phone . It helped last time and it’s been good to look back to remind myself what I did eat and enjoy.

TinglyandCurious · 03/01/2025 18:26

That’s amazing @Shmee1988! hopefully you can stay on a nice low dose if you’re that sensitive to it. Good luck.

@Souredgrapes I had a high protein wholemeal thin with smoked salmon for breakfast, chicken and some salad for lunch and having a lentil bolognaise with a small amount of wholemeal pasta for evening meal. Comes in at about 1200 calories. Would be really interested to hear what others are having too. I tried a high protein yoghurt as a snack but couldn’t get it down me.

I was a bit shocked when I added up the calories in my dinner. It was a medium jacket, 3/4 of tuna in spring water, mayo (not great, not light) a bit of butter and a tiny bit of cheese. Salad and cucumber. Comes in at about 750/800 calories!!!

Souredgrapes · 03/01/2025 20:05

Hi @TinglyandCurious and @Shmee1988 . It’s great having two people to talk to about this . I told everyone who would listen was taking saxander but this time I’ve decided to keep MJ information to myself. Yes , it’s surprising how the calories add up ! I had tuna and mixed beans for dinner tonight and it was 700 calories ! I was hungry when I got home tonight but I couldn’t finish all of my meal so something is definitely happening . I have also managed to swerve the wine which is unusual for a Friday .
Out all day tomorrow but I think I I’ll have plenty of healthy food choices so not to concerned .

Re the full fat mayo . I made my own low fat / lower cal version from a few foodie blogs . It’s actually not bad . The Dijon mustard is a bit strong so I’ll find a milder one next time . Have a google but basically I blended ( bullet type blender ) 3 hard boiled eggs with a couple of teaspoons of cider vinegar and a good dollop of Dijon mustard ( to much so I’ll tone it down next time ) . Kept blending till it went smooth like mayo . No oil so a fraction of the calories .

my other favorite low cal swap is sour cream for quark in fajitas.

Sitting here on a Friday Drinking Tea. Weird .

I Hope @Sebsaloysius sees her thread has taken off and comes back. 😀

Sebsaloysius · 03/01/2025 20:08

Good to hear the stories already! I have a medical backstory for taking this - I have Type 3C diabetes, or pancreatogenic diabetes I think it's also known as. In any event, my body produces some, but very little, insulin. I have been on insulin for 15 years, and the increasing amount I am needing to use now is frightening. A bloody horrible negative effect of these huge doses is the weight gain - I literally gained 6 stone over the last 3 years, and couldn't really afford to even put 1 stone of that on in the first place. I lost nearly 3 of those stone again over the last 18 months, due to stress and circumstances at home, having two elderly parents living with us and nursing them through their declining health etc.

I was prescribed the Mounjaro back in September. My GP is really keen to reduce the amount of insulin amount I take, but additional diabetic medications haven't worked and this is a bit of a last-ditch attempt before I am considered for an insuln pump. For a whole host of reasons that are so boring I won't go into in great detail, I didn't start taking it - to cut a long story short, last year was the year from hell, After a period of ill health, my parents sadly passed away within weeks of each other between January and March, I was then admitted to hospital shortly after my Dad passed and I ended up having major (full leg) bypass surgery - I was just getting over it and starting to get back on my feet when the graft failed, so I had further surgery in November. This prolonged period of inactivity (and grieving, I guess), meant I stuffed my face too much and piled the weight back on!

Another reason for my reticence to start the Mounjaro was that I have had pancreatitis in the past - it was a terrifying experience and one I have no wish to repeat (and this is where the diabetes came from). My GP assures me that I shouldn't be at any higher risk than someone who hasn't had pancreatitis, but for some reason, I'm having a hard time believing her as it does seem to be listed as a potential danger sign with Mounjaro. Anyhow, new year and all that, I decided enough is enough and I did my first injection yesterday (Thursday) morning.

Within hours I genuinely felt full up even though I hadn't eaten. I'm a dreadful eater, for someone who should eat little and often to regulate the blood glucose levels and optimise my insulin injections, I tend to go all day without eating at all, only to start around 6pm and eat everything in sight for the next 6 hours! I didn't eat very much yesterday at all, some cheese and biscuits, bowl of cereal and a mince pie, but felt quite ok - not overly full but not particularly hungry. When I went to bed, I did have a slight feeling of discomfort in my stomach, but not enough to bother me. Upon getting up this morning, I really did feel like I had eaten a massive meal and felt almost uncomfortably full. I met friends for brunch and had a children's breakfast - I enjoyed it and could have easily eaten more. Interestingly, shortly afterwards I felt less full and bloated, almost as if my stomach had something to do! My DH has been called out to work at short notice this evening, just before I was planning to get dinner for us both. I really did feel quite empty a while ago and was overdue my insulin, so I had a couple of lumps of cheese and a handful of garlic cloves in chilli oil (I know!!!). I don't feel as un-hungry as I did yesterday and I'm sure I could cheerfully stuff my face with crap at the moment. I'm desperately trying not to.....DH is due back around 10, so I think we will have a bowl of soup and some toast for a late supper.

So that's my story folks....well done if you're still awake and have made it this far! I'm slightly disappointed that I don't feel as full as I did yesterday and was hoping for a greater appetite suppression today than I've had so far. Maybe it's early days yet and I just need to give it time. As far as side effects, apart from that slight tummy discomfort last night, I've had nothing - certainly no nausea, gas or anything remotely gastric thankfully.

I'm forward to hearing how everyone else's days progress as we march onwards on our journeys.

Just on a separate note, did anyone see Robbie Williams on the Graham Norton show the other night? I noticed he looked rather old and a bit gaunt around gills and then he made mention of Ozempic and how it had made a lot of him disappear! I must admit that I am a little worried about losing muscle mass, I'm closer to 60 than I am 50 and really have noticed the years creeping up on me recently - the grey hairs and crepe skin seem to have appeared from nowhere. I am very limited in what physical exercise I can do, as I am already registered disabled (I broke my spine in several places in an accident when I was 19), and the leg bypass surgery hasn't helped my mobility at all. I just hope that if I am fortunate enough to shed some weight with the Mounjaro, that I don't end up looking like a deflated barrage balloon at the same time!

Hi @Sebsaloysius, thank you for sharing your story. You’ve clearly been through so much - I was really sorry to read about your parents. I’m glad you’re at a stage where you can care for yourself rather than everyone else now.

I’m definitely less “un-hungry” today which I won’t pretend I’m not disappointed by either. But it’s only the end of day 2 here and need to let my body (and habits) adjust. We’ll get there.

I didn’t see Graham N but did see Robbie on something else and wondered about the loss of muscle mass as his face looks so different. My understanding is that having a good amount of protein helps reduce this risk and also not losing too fast. The protein powder I’m using also has collagen added which might help? Would a recumbent bicycle be a good option for you exercise wise. I’ve got a slim-cycle as have Ehlers-Danlos and have to do low impact exercise as a result. Good luck lovely x

thinblurredblueline · 04/01/2025 08:07

I started at 7pm last night, watched a you tube tutorial about 20 times to realise it's not rocket science, but just me being nervous. Not sure how I'm feeling, I feel I could eat. I've 3stone to loose. From what I've read 2.5mg is to get the body acclimatised and the real magic happens further down.

TinglyandCurious · 04/01/2025 09:13

Hi @thinblurredblueline, I watched so many videos too. Well done! And yes that’s my understanding re dosages too. The vast majority will need more than 2.5 to feel any suppression. Good luck 🙂

Usernamesarenoteasy · 04/01/2025 10:13

I actually struggled to make myself eat yesterday. I just felt so full all day! Counted 932 calories.
Still that same feeling this morning, although I did manage my porridge.
Long may it continue!
Can't wait to weigh myself after this first week.

Axalotllittle · 04/01/2025 15:16

Just injected about an hour ago.

Anyone fancy a mini WhatsApp group?

TinglyandCurious · 04/01/2025 16:11

@Axalotllittle I am 🙂

TinglyandCurious · 04/01/2025 16:24

@Axalotllittle I mean I’m up for it 😆
