Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

I’ve just found a dress I like the look of but it’s nearly £2000 - I think there would be a divorce if I spent that much on a dress 😂😂😂

But this is more like what I normally wear! Obvs not that colour but the shape

You have a lovely curvy figure with a waist,op. I like the dress above but maybe something to take more advantage of your new shape. https://aureva.co.uk/products/condici-pure-silk-dress-with-sleeves-poppy-and-freddie-liberty-fabric?_pos=2&_fid=4a34029d7&_ss=c&variant=58203285487961
This site has some beauties. Maybe choose a colour that coordinates with your daughter’s bridesmaids or flowers.
Your husband and daughter sound lovely!

OP, Mac Duggal don't have a store in London.

Some of the dresses on their website are stocked by a couple of small retailers, however.

Yes it’s a stockist x

Every time someone asks where they can get a dress for a wedding, the answer is always ‘have you tried Phase 8?’. It’s so unimaginative! Every time.

Thats my thoughts anyway.

Edited

I agree, the “occasion” dresses are very formulaic and dated. And usually paired with grotesque fascinates.

5pm

Is the wedding itself taking place in a hotel, rather than a church, OP?

No neither. Chelsea Old Town Hall so a registry office

The dresses are too long.

The colour is okay though, if it’s bride approved. I’ve worn a navy dress to a wedding before. But these dresses just look like they are wearing you and not the other way around.

You should try a dress in a lighter flowing fabric (even if you stick with blue) at a length that falls somewhere between knee and ankle. The neckline should be simpler and less gaping. Something with a simple boatneck or v-neck without too much fussiness or detail around the neck and no cleavage.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/08/2026 21:03

What sort of venue is after the registry office, or not ?

Lifelover16 · 15/08/2026 21:18

minipie · 15/08/2026 21:10

I think you need something lighter and softer coloured OP, and definitely something with much more of a waist!

How about this

this

Or this

just as ideas?

iMO these are gorgeous and fit the brief perfectly

Blodyneighbour · 15/08/2026 21:19

I think Navy is still too dark. I know as we get older darker colours tend to look better, but for a wedding Could you go for Green. Not too dark and not too bright, Or maybe Torqoise,.

Cazz1953 · 15/08/2026 21:23

Sorry, I’m with your husband on this. They are not very flattering.

FairViewRosie25 · 15/08/2026 21:24

I agree, neither is flattering and they are too dark.

In that case, I wouldn't go longer than midi.

You are spending quite a bit on a special dress and don't want something which might catch your heel on the steps or pick up dirt on the hem when on the pavement.

Pinkdhalia · 15/08/2026 21:30

I agree with your husband, it doesn't fit her well at all it's far too low and wide at the front and the huge bow is overkill! Not good at all. Be a bit more demure in the choice of outfit. show less top and less leg and not Black with ditsy daisies!

Roulett · 15/08/2026 21:37

The colour is wrong and the one with the pearls in particular is way too wide over your hips

bananaobama · 15/08/2026 21:57

First one ok
sexond one awful. Makes you look like the queen mother

choose a lighter colour

bananaobama · 15/08/2026 21:58

Oh god those gloves 😂

TubeScreamer · 15/08/2026 22:19

I’m with your dh on this

the colour is wrong for you, and they are both a strange and unflattering shape. The bobbly bots around the neckline of the second one are awful and cheapen it.

RainySummer · 15/08/2026 22:40

Do people really not have the sense to realise that after 19 pages things might have moved on, and so it’s worth at least reading all of the OP’s posts before jumping in?!
OP you should be so proud of the weight loss, well done, what an achievement! I think you’re just not quite used to your lovely new figure and what styles and colours might suit you now, please listen to the helpful posters, they’ll keep you right, along with backup from your very tactful and caring DH and DD. Good luck 😊

NCTDN · 15/08/2026 22:56

Sorry I’m another who doesn’t think they’re great. You clearly have a lovely figure and it’s all hidden.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 15/08/2026 23:00

Phase Eight is quite a good call for a MOB outfit for a woman in her 60's based on the dresses the OP was posting. And I've had one or two of their dresses from my 30s onwards. I was assuming that she didn't want something too out there and just a better shape and fit for her. And only the first one I posted was Phase Eight. Also clearly many people do buy and wear those dresses or they would no longer be in business. Plus being MOB is not a chance to upstage your daughter, and OP clearly isn't trying to, I'd want to look nice but not draw attention to myself.

A friend wore this for her daughters wedding and looked stunning
https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/peacock-manor-silk-satin-gala-maxi-dress-000798996.html

That’s the one I’ve chosen for my son’s wedding.

This print is so Springy and lovely. Something along these lines also more fresh and youthful.
It can be hard to adjust to a whole new body shape, maybe start by trying on things that skim, like this dress, and then also more fitted things ? There is a Stine Goya shop in London, filled with colour.

That's really nice

Lovebirds has a similar vibe. If I were looking for a dress to wear to my son's wedding I'd look at them. I don't see what the problem is with navy, particularly if it's a deep, rich navy with white, although Lovebirds has spectacular dresses in green, red, orange and yellow too.

That Liberty peacock dress is lovely - Liberty do have some great dresses. They stock Rixo too, which might be worth a look.
I thought this might suit you from Katya Wildman (used to be Bombshell). Also available in pink.

You have a great figure, and this dress would be elegant and flattering. Also, looking at your hair, which looks pretty twisted up, I wonder if you really need a hat? Could you just style it beautifully, held with a gorgeous clip? I’m sure you will find something fabulous - good luck! 😀
