Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

Sorry, but I agree with your husband.I think the colour is too dark for a MOB.

Bikergran · 16/08/2026 13:17

I rarely say this......your husband is right. Dark, dreary and unflattering.

bettyboo9 · 16/08/2026 13:23

Maybe consider going to a department store such as John Lewes and asking for a store stylist to help and give direction. If you go down the navy route maybe consider a different colour hat or fascinator to brighten the look. In store staff should be able to help lots. Book an appointment and just embrace what they come up with even if you don’t purchase. Things to consider are body shape, whether you want to show your legs below the knee etc. Just embrace and enjoy the adventure and also the wedding. I do agree with lots of the other comments, the whole look so far is very dark. Celebrate you!

I tend to pick blue! My wardrobe is basically blue and black with a lot of striped t-shirts or plain white

I have no idea what happens when I get dressed for the gym 😂.

I think I need to try other colours on to see what looks ok! I really have no idea 🤷

Have you considered having a session with a colour analyst? They are amazingly helpful at identifying what colours actually suit your skin tone. If you usually wear black/grey/blue, it can open up a whole world of possibilities. Just search for 'colour analyst' - and opt for a face-to-face session rather than online.

ThatWhiteElephant · 16/08/2026 13:46

Sorry, I’m with your husband.
I’d go for something more colourful.
I don’t think the shape is very flattering on you either.

VoiceofInsanity · 16/08/2026 13:49

You should wear what you love and feel good in. And if that's this dress then I say go for it. Buuuuut, if you are interested in the opinions of others, I think you can do better than this, and in any event, ditch the gloves, they don't do anything for the outfit.

zingally · 16/08/2026 14:26

The dress with the bow at the back is definitely the best out of the two.
The one with the white detailing round the neck doesn't fit well at the front and is too "dull" for a wedding.
Love the hat!

anewlifeinthesun · 16/08/2026 14:27

They are both awful and way too dark. What’s with the gloves?

Maybe read at least the @Biggles27 posts?

zingally · 16/08/2026 14:30

Having now seen the dress online, and the price point you're working at... Respectfully, I think you can find something far nicer than either of these options.
Based on the not-great fit and hang of both dresses, I'd assumed we were looking at something closer to the £100 mark...

Gleba · 16/08/2026 14:34

When you come to London see if you can fit in a visit to The Fold. Something like this would be more modern and the quality is fantastic

Returns are free so you can also order online and try them at home

@bettyboo9 (and others recommending the same thing) - do people planning to spend £6 or 700 on a dress really take their money to John Lewis?

Or do posters suggest this because they’re not familiar with anywhere else?

I was going to suggest this too. I'm pretty good on colours through my design background, so worked it out for myself - but if it's not something that's innate to you (& the OP does sound rather uncertain!) then I can imagine it being useful.

I know some people think it's a bit daft, as people then get fixated on only wearing "their" colours. And that does sound very rigid.

But I read a post on here previously, where the writer said that the colour analyst took her existing wardrobe into account & showed her how to integrate & mix items to suit her colouring. Which sounded eminently practical & is something I do myself with, for example, black.

(I'm a soft autumn hovering on the border of warm spring, with pale skin & strawberry blonde hair. If I wear black with orange-red lips & slightly stronger make-up than usual, it can look great as it contrasts with my hair without washing me out. Textures like velvet & silk also soften the appearance of black, & lace/crochet etc allow some skin to break up the heaviness.)

Freda69 · 16/08/2026 15:29

Firstly huge congratulations on the weight loss - it can be difficult to get used to the new you.
Sorry, but I think those dresses are much too dark and dreary for a spring wedding. Think what your favourite colours are and go from there. You could have a look at Aspiga occasion dresses - they have some pretty summery dresses, but also some plainer colours which might be better for a more formal event. I got my MoG dress from there.

TerfOnATrain · 16/08/2026 15:32

I don’t mind the first one, though it’s too big, but for a winter wedding. Definitely not spring. FWIW, I hate those typical MoB very fitted dresses and hats. Married both my DC last year, spring and autumn and went long and floaty for both. I’m a size 12.

BuildbyNumbere · 16/08/2026 15:34

The back looks nice but I think the front is very frumpy. I don’t think this is the right length for you either.
Maybe need to go to a proper MOTB shop for a fitting.

Bowieorbowie · 16/08/2026 15:52

Biggles27 · 14/08/2026 20:38

Possibly! I’m 9 stone down -,always gone for a-line

and for what it’s worth I’m in my 60’s

Congratulations, that's an amazing achievement!

I've not lost as much, but having shed 5 stone one of the hardest things for me was to rethink the clothes I could now wear. For years I'd hidden in baggy clothes in dark colours. Basically if it fitted, it would do. If I found a top or trousers that fitted, I'd buy several and wear the same every day. I had three or four safe shops, and 90% of my wardrobe came from them.

When I first lost the weight, I starting buying the same clothes I always did, just in smaller sizes. So I just looked like a smaller version of frumpy and hiding. It took a while for my confidence to catch up. I'm now looking at different styles, trying different shops and wearing colours I haven't worn for years.

Could you reward yourself with a session with a personal shopper? They can advise on what works for your new shape and suggest things you wouldn't necessarily pick out for yourself, particularly if you've felt constrained to particular styles for a long time. Or would your daughter be up for a day shopping? My daughter has been great at persuading me to try things I wouldn't have looked at, and she is invariably right. From your photos, you don't need to confine yourself to the styles you used to, for example you have a great waist, and can really show that off.

Have you had a recent bra fitting? My size changed completely, and now I've got bras that fit, clothes fit so much better, and hang properly.

You mention your age. I am a similar age, and I have become open to shopping in places I never used to, and it's great. For example, the best fitting bras I own are from Victoria's Secret, after years of Marks and Spencer. It's also fun ditching granny pants for something a bit less conservative - good for confidence too!

Sorry he’s right, they are not flattering on you.

sunnybaros · 16/08/2026 16:10

Sorry, they are not flattering at all.

tarnishedglitterball · 16/08/2026 16:10

I honestly don't like either dress but its not about me - its about you.

I'm assuming your husband is commenting from a place of love and adoration and is trying to gently point out that both dresses do you absolutely no favours. He's saying this because from your photos it looks like you have a fab complexion, great skin, a nice figure and your hair looks that superb mix of grey and mink which people crave. He wants you to shine on a very important day.

If you will be comfortable wearing either dress, bugger everyone, wear whichever you like, but these comments are trying to help you be objective.

Castolaya · 16/08/2026 16:17

I saw your photos and then read only your posts. I was going to say you have a fab figure but those dresses are not capitalising on it but I read you’ve lost 9 stone so it is even more important you get this right to really showcase your achievements. Get a stylish friend to go with you and pick out their style for you or a professional shopper. You have done so amazing you deserve some amazing photos.

Very pretty! My sister is in London this weekend & visiting Stine Goya - I am very jealous ... Some Alemais dresses have a similar vibe.

(Btw have you worn your Liberty outfit now?!)

Wearing the dress next weekend 🙂. I bought the blouse version in the sale as I love the sleeves.

A quick glance at a couple of the websites I mentioned above, & these stood out to me as lovely, & appropriate. They are by Bernadette, Beulah, Victoria Beckham & Roksanda. Looking at the individual websites for each designer will throw up more colours/styles etc.

These are all gorgeous.

MabelAnderson · 16/08/2026 16:21

EleanorMc67 · 15/08/2026 04:43

And, because I love them, these Liberty silk dresses (which are infinitely nicer than anything in MoB shops by Kevan Jon, Veni Infantino & all those other strange labels that only get worn on these occasions ... AND cheaper!!)

I have this dress, suggested by Eleanor ! It is so beautiful, the fabric, the shape. I am going to buy it in another colourway.

Pineapplewaves · 16/08/2026 16:22

They all look too big and shapeless. If you like them, take them to a seamstress and ask if they can be altered to fit you perfectly. Is it an autumn/winter wedding? Otherwise I’d look at lighter colours. What colour is the Mother of the Bride wearing?
