Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

Team DH sorry OP

snoopydoopydo · 15/08/2026 19:15

There's an air of Victorian duchess about these dresses for some reason. Sorry OP, I'm with your DH, you can find a much more flattering colour and fit.

20centurySteph · 15/08/2026 19:17

I would for a spring wedding pick up much lighter color. Navy reds like black. I also think they’re very matronly.
Just for fun I’d pick up a couple store websites and have your husband pick out a couple things, since he’s not a fan.

chedderland · 15/08/2026 19:25

Both a bit queen mother ish

chedderland · 15/08/2026 19:28

I’d be pouring with sweat in both of those

Sorry but your husband is right. He wants you to look and feel your best !
might be worth investing in a colour analysis - it can make such a huge difference if you wear your best colours that flatter your skin tone, hair and eyes.

depending on budget and not from experience

Brigette67 · 15/08/2026 19:35

Sorry meant to say Mac Duggal is a website that do stunning dresses for bridal mother of the bride groom etc

pingi1 · 15/08/2026 19:38

I was MOB in April and understand how you just want to get your outfit organised but don’t rush into something. I lost 6 stone the year before (I’m 65) and tried on so many outfits but just didn’t feel they were me! Well done on the 9 stone - you need to wear something to celebrate that amazing achievement! I ended up getting a gorgeous dress from Needle and Thread and I felt a million dollars. (My DH loved it also which was important too 😊). It’s such a special day you want to “feel” your very best! Good luck- you will find your dress! This was mine 💕

I don’t like any of them. I feel sure you could get something more flattering and not black for a wedding

PurpleDisco · 15/08/2026 19:44

Sorry but I agree with your DH! If you really have to choose one of these dresses then go for the first one as it’s the only one that fits you ok’ish. When is the wedding? I think you could easily be styled very nicely if you go to a designated wedding shop as you have a good frame to work with.

Unreasonableexpectation · 15/08/2026 19:44

A complete change of direction, but I wore this to a Royal Garden Party and absolutely adored it! I think it would really suit you and show off your new figure

In the nicest possible way, I think you can find something to wear that is more flattering as you have a great figure!

I think navy is too draining for your skin tone and you would suit a brighter colour. Choose something with structure that is sophisticated - nothing too fussy. You can accessorise with statement pieces if that's what you like.

I would also choose a high heeled shoe with a pointed toe rather than round or square.

Hope you have a lovely 'Mother of the Bride' day x 💐

runnersfeet · 15/08/2026 19:57

You've been such a good sport OP. If you have narrow shoulders a v neck may be better and not need altering. Please come back later and show us all
your new choice. A brighter colour would look amazing on you 💕

Jem57 · 15/08/2026 20:01

So old fashioned, agree with your husband, have a total rethink.

Ponderingwindow · 15/08/2026 20:13

I too have lost a bunch of weight recently. I’m really having to work hard to see myself as I really am. It’s mostly quick glances in the mirror that catch me off guard and help me realize I am still dressing for my old body.

I personally still have a long way to go with the weight loss, but that doesn’t mean I can’t dress better in the meantime.

You should look fabulous at this wedding. You want to look back at these photos and not just go, my dress was ok, you want to remember how you felt beautiful. You aren’t the bride, but it’s still ok to shine a bit.

@Biggles27

OP, when you were trying the dresses on in the shop, was there a wide choice of dresses?

Did the assistant show you any others?

Have you bought one of the dresses shown?

Thankfully no!!!!!!!!

I agree with yourDH.
The dresses are wearing you - rather than you rocking the dress. For your budget you could get something much nicer.

What time of day is the wedding? Your choices suggest an evening/black tie event

Calm33 · 15/08/2026 20:25

Not flattering for you I'm afraid. Its when you go into a shop and see something lovely i.e. big bow and think whow I love it.
Your figure can be shown off alot better and such a dark colour for the mother of the bride, honestly the cut is the most important thing not the other things that might attract you.
Keep looking.....

I think the first one is quite nice, but for the price you could find better.

I hate the second one.

Craftycariad · 15/08/2026 20:36

I am with hubby the colour is awful and none of the styles suit you, why did you choose these particular ones. Do they match the wedding colour scheme

Fingeronthebutton · 15/08/2026 20:37

I think someone’s having a laugh 😂 There’s bad taste and then there’s I’m wearing this for a bet.
Nobody would seriously wear that.

OP, Mac Duggal don't have a store in London.

Some of the dresses on their website are stocked by a couple of small retailers, however.
