1st September marks the start of meteorological Autumn and it looks like the new season/month is going to start with a continuation of the weather we’ve had the last few weeks ~ unsettled. But here are the Autumnal thoughts of….

TheWeatherOutlook
and yesterday’s thoughts from Netweather (their Autumn forecast doesn't seem to be available yet.)

And then there’s a very strong El Nino to add into the mix, which might bring a stormy/windy Autumn ~ Netweather's thoughts from a few weeks ago...

So let's see what the new season brings....

Developing Super El Nino may bring a wetter-than-average autumn

The latest ECWMF seasonal forecast indicates that it will turn increasingly wet through autumn - which is likely linked to super strong El Nino forecast to develop later this year - which tends to fuel an enhanced Atlantic storm track into Europe.

Chilly night here ~ temperature is about 5C at the moment so heating has definitely been on!

I've noticed there are brown patches on some areas of grass as I've been out walking as well and yesterday, there were a lot of leaves that had fallen (guessing it's the ones that turned brown before we had all the rain and temperatures returned to more normal conditions for the time of year.)

And the unsettled theme continues and that's the sort of autumn I can cope with ~ some warm sunny days but also rain (to fill up the reservoirs after the summer) and not too many storms.

Good time to reseed the brown patches. We did it recently and it's growing well.

justasking111 ~ With the mixture of weather we're having, it's a good time to do that. But as is the case with autumn, there are some blustery conditions about at times ~ today's thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook.

Torrential rain this morning and lots of wind

GloriaSmud · 09/10/2026 16:09

We've managed to escape the heavy rain today (although looking at the dark clouds gathering, that might change a bit later) and it's been a good drying day as it's been warm and blustery. But I've decided it's time to cover the patio table/chairs and BBQ ~ think that might be it for the year!

The tornadoes in parts of Sicily look frightening.

GloriaSmud · Today 09:15

It looked like a real Autumnal day yesterday ~ dull, damp, windy and drizzly...except for the temperatures, which were a really mild 15/16C.

Unsettled pattern carries on but tomorrow (and not surprised about this one) ~ the metoffice has issued a wind weather warning for the NW of Scotland and there could be some heavy rain for Scotland/the NW over the next day or two. It's still looking like it could be a little unsettled at times for the rest of the country but the south/SE could get quite warm over the next day or two. The weekend is looking settled with temperatures around 13/14C (cooler in the north) but chilly at night ~ might be a few places that see a frost...

(Thunderstorms are quite common this time of year for the Mediterranean but I hadn't heard about the tornado in Sicily.)
