Autumn 2026 (1st September ~ start of meteorological Autumn)

1st September marks the start of meteorological Autumn and it looks like the new season/month is going to start with a continuation of the weather we’ve had the last few weeks ~ unsettled. But here are the Autumnal thoughts of….

TheWeatherOutlook
and yesterday’s thoughts from Netweather (their Autumn forecast doesn't seem to be available yet.)

And then there’s a very strong El Nino to add into the mix, which might bring a stormy/windy Autumn ~ Netweather's thoughts from a few weeks ago...

So let's see what the new season brings....

Developing Super El Nino may bring a wetter-than-average autumn

The latest ECWMF seasonal forecast indicates that it will turn increasingly wet through autumn - which is likely linked to super strong El Nino forecast to develop later this year - which tends to fuel an enhanced Atlantic storm track into Europe.

Woke up at 7 to everything being calm as the eye passed over. Picking up again now very windy but not too wet.

Biblical rainfall at 1.30am though. That should tip the reservoirs up.

didn't they say something along nonstop of heavy rain for 6 weeks required for the reservoirs, not a couple of hours?

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/10/2026 12:09

Yes. But every little bit counts. Some rain is definitely better than no rain and might at least hold off further restrictions beyond the current hosepipe ban.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/10/2026 12:11

Actually I realise I’ve left a word out of my earlier post. It was supposed to say help top the reservoirs up. Not that it would top them up.

GloriaSmud · 23/10/2026 16:41

The wind's really got up in the last hour or two here. Not much in the way of rain but dark skies and fast-moving clouds.

Updated weather warnings from the metoffice for the next day or two...

It's eased off here. Didn't blow the bins over we've had worse.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/10/2026 17:32

Quite windy overnight here, and raining. And has been raining pretty steadily all day, which is excellent as we need it in the south east.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/10/2026 18:03

We’ve definitely had worse in terms of wind and rain here. Still quite windy now but has definitely eased off, apart from some minor flooding at 1am have escaped unscathed.

Hello, I haven’t been on here for ages

We had a lovely autumn... I didn’t have to obsess about the weather!

@GloriaSmud any thoughts in general for the next month? I’m in Essex. I suppose it’s way too early to think about anything else really.

I was grateful we didn’t have a freezing winter last winter!

GloriaSmud · 23/10/2026 19:55

@EmeraldRoulette ~ nice to see you back ~ I thought you might be enjoying the cooler temperatures that Autumn has brought!

The GFS only goes up to the 8th November and is looking similar to what we've got at the moment ~ unsettled but also some colder nights. After that, the metoffice's long range forecast seems to think that the unsettled theme will continue ~ hopefully 'unsettled' doesn't mean one storm after another though!

Wednesday, 28th October-Friday,6th November
After an unsettled start to the week conditions will likely become more settled with rain and stronger winds becoming more confined to northwestern areas. Likely turning drier and calmer across the south and east bringing a greater chance of chilly nights and morning fog patches. A similar pattern then likely continuing during early November though with a chance that settled conditions may develop more widely for a time. Temperatures varying around average.

Saturday, 7th November-Saturday, 21st November
Slowly evolving weather patterns are more likely than normal during early in November which increase the chance of spells of settled and drier weather. Most areas are still likely to see some rain or showers at times but the focus of these more likely across the northwest of the UK. Into mid-November, the chances of a more unsettled weather regime increases again with more frequent spells of rain for many areas and likely windy at times. Some cold nights possible during more settled spells, otherwise temperatures likely to be close to, perhaps a little above average.

@GloriaSmud thank you that’s helpful

Actually, I feel like autumn around my way has been the summer that we should have had. Lots of sunny 25° days. I’m really glad we had it because if we’d gone straight into weather like today, that have would been awful.

Next year, I’m hoping for a spring. But I’m also going to get a better air-conditioning unit. Which hopefully won’t be difficult as mine is apparently 14 years old! I literally hadn’t realised 😂

So on to storm no.2 ~ Storm Boelo. Current weather warnings ~ looks like things will kick off this afternoon, getting very windy/wet just about everywhere but it'll be the north/Scotland that's most affected this afternoon/overnight and tomorrow.

More wind and rain the early part of next week but then calms down mid-week onwards...

Well I checked the bin trolley before dark, absolutely fine. This morning was all over the side passage on the North side. Musta been a rogue gust.

So the kitchen bins and cardboard one are full to bursting. Collected early Tuesday morning. The forecast isn't good 🙈

GloriaSmud · 24/10/2026 13:21

Gives a new meaning to 'bin collection', justasking111, in that you've got to collect the contents of your bin first! It is indeed looking a bit stormy for the start of next week and then quietens down the rest of the week.

Live reporting on Storm Boelo on the BBC website.

Storm Boelo hits UK with wind and rain as warnings issued for large parts of country

A yellow warning for rain began at 11:00 in much of England and Wales - a wind warning began at 12:00 in northern parts of England and Wales, plus Scotland.

Wind and rain has arrived here in the Midlands so that's set in for the day.

I think word of the day is wet. But I mustn’t complain.

EmeraldRoulette · 24/10/2026 13:58

I got caught out today, it was forecast to start raining about 3 o’clock. I had to run some errands. I could’ve run them about 11 am but ended up leaving it till one.

At which point I looked outside and just thought, no…..Errands on foot in this weather is not fun.

I need to learn that the hourly weather forecast is not good. I keep learning this lesson….! and then somehow I forget it

Rowgtfc72 · 24/10/2026 15:33

East coast of England here. Very wet and mildly breezy but not the 50mph gusts we were promised.
Wondered if the storm was running late.

Liverpoolxxx · 24/10/2026 18:27

Hebrides here. It’s not nice out. They’re shutting the Skye Bridge later which is unusual.

socks1107 · 24/10/2026 18:51

South east and it’s really windy out now, we’ve just got home and glad we’re indoors. Main road into our village has patches of flooding on it and I’ll be glad when my 20 year old is home from work at 9pm

justasking111 · 24/10/2026 20:44

Just spoken to son he said watch flight radar and the planes in holding patterns at Manchester. He flies out of Leeds Bradford. One he was watching has just landed at Stansted.

EmeraldRoulette · 24/10/2026 22:08

I just heard what I thought was the sound of fireworks in the distance.

I was thinking it would be a weird night for it. It’s not fireworks. It’s that kind of thudding wind noise.

That’s pretty full on considering what was forecast for round here. Also, I’m in flats, with more flats directly in front of me. Normally they would break things up a bit. So that’s quite fierce.

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/10/2026 22:25

Wind has really picked up here now.

justasking111 · 24/10/2026 22:31

Its a fierce one power cuts up the Conwy valley all the way over to the English border. We've got this till tea time tomorrow. Fiercest of all during the night. Our lights keep flickering, I think our bird feeder crashed to the ground about an hour ago.

ListenLinda · 24/10/2026 22:34

Wind has been picking up for the last hour or so in West Yorkshire.
postponed DS’s football sponsored walk tomorrow AM due to forecast winds.
walking 8 x 8 year olds along a canal with 50mph+ gusts tomorrow is not the one…

EmeraldRoulette · 24/10/2026 23:03

@ListenLinda I love that expression. I only know one person who uses it.

I think they might be wrong when they say the winds are dying out tomorrow morning here. They were certainly wrong about the rain.
