Autumn 2026 (1st September ~ start of meteorological Autumn)

1st September marks the start of meteorological Autumn and it looks like the new season/month is going to start with a continuation of the weather we’ve had the last few weeks ~ unsettled. But here are the Autumnal thoughts of….

And then there’s a very strong El Nino to add into the mix, which might bring a stormy/windy Autumn ~ Netweather's thoughts from a few weeks ago...

So let's see what the new season brings....

Weather for the coming days ~ the unsettled theme continues. It seems to be a pattern of one day fine, the next wet/blustery with Scotland/northern England being the areas that'll get most of the rain this week.

It's definitely like that here @GloriaSmud . But mother nature is recovering. I hope the birds come back to our garden though.

Just like this here in the south west. One day walking on the beach in full waterproofs and a wooly hat, the next day shorts and T-shirt. It's grey and damp here this morning but I have the patio doors open as it is so warm.

The dogs are very confused! But the garden is happier.

I noticed the birds disappeared for quite a lot of the time while we had the hot weather. We've had rain overnight and it's drizzling now and the birds are having a fine time out there so hopefully they're coming back for the autumn/winter.

And RoseInAPot ~ garden is definitely looking better ~ grass cutting has resumed!

The weather for the next week or two is looking fairly settled (and warm for some places.) Netweather's thoughts on the rest of the month ~ warm yes, heatwave probably not....

Thanks @GloriaSmud - it will be lovely to have some warmth and settled weather. Think the gardens have sufficiently recovered and I’m sure there will be lots of rain ahead in autumn.

That weather outlook looks good, hopefully it does stay dry next week as the lawn needs a serious haircut. I'm losing the pigeons in it 😂

I cut our grass a few days ago ~ the 2nd time in 10 days or so. It's not my favourite gardening job but after the heatwaves and having to look at horrible brown grass, I'm almost glad it has to be done again!

It looks like settled weather is the theme for the next week or two and the long-range forecast from the metoffice seems to back this up...

Thursday, 22nd September - 1st October
The first part of this period will likely see a build of pressure across much of the UK, with Atlantic weather fronts becoming more confined to the far north west. As such, plenty of dry and increasingly warm and perhaps rather humid weather will develop across the majority of areas. Thereafter, likely turning changeable again, with spells of rain and showers interspersed with some short-lived spells of more settled weather and temperatures returning to near normal overall.

Some absolutely mad temps down here this week given the time of year. 21 in 1st few days of October.

We've bleached and pressure washed all the paths around the house as have our neighbours either side. The pots and troughs although still flowering are woody and leggy. And the flies are driving me nuts. Fruit flies on the fruit bowl, white flies on the basil on the kitchen window sill. It's ridiculous. 😡

Still have a hosepipe ban here so pressure washing is off.

Very mild first thing this morning!

I also have lots of fruit flies which is driving me mad.

Not sure if I need to water the garden. Haven’t been tracking the rain. Also worried that some of my lawn has come back but other parts haven’t.

Those fruit flies were buzzing around me in the sitting room last evening. We've a bowl to catch them in the kitchen.

Woah was nippy this morning. Went to bed with two windows open. Needed sheepskin slippers and dressing gown this morning. But now it's lovely. Have been cleaning cars. Have new windscreen wipers they were rusty. The weather is looking stable here at the moment. The trees haven't turned yet, the grass is growing fast. The magnolia is in bloom again. Our pots and troughs are still throwing out flowers.

Looks like quite a calm/settled start to the week but then turns unsettled from mid-week onwards, with England and Wales getting a decent amount of rain on Wednesday. Wednesday and Thursday night looks like it could be quite chilly with the chance of a slight frost in some places in Scotland and temperatures down to single figures in the rest of the UK.
So not too bad a week (but it's very noticeable now how much the nights are drawing in ~ only a few weeks left before the clocks go back...)

Proper autumn seems to have arrived ~ looks like windy, wet and chilly is the theme for the next week or two....

Today's thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook...

The delayed shutdown of nature has given plants, trees a chance to recover from the extended heatwaves before being slammed by winter. Went for a ride in the country yesterday the leaves aren't turning yet.

The more normal conditions for the time of year is doing nature some good. There were hints of the leaves changing a few weeks ago but that seems to have been halted by the rain. I think when they do start properly changing though, there are going to be some amazing colours because of the summer we've had...

I agree, I had half expected my trees to have given up and gone into winter mode so it's nice to see them still mainly green. However all the fruit has been stripped and not a single apple or pear has touched the floor which is extremely unusual as I normally have to collect half a bin load before I can mow the lawn. And yes, the trees were overladen three weeks ago.

Woke up to rain hitting the window hard this morning but it's lovely outside now.

As expected, the chilly temperatures today along with the rain has made it feel like a proper autumn day here. We started at 10C this morning and it got up to 13/14C this afternoon after the rain had stopped. But we're in for a chilly night with temperatures in single figures and that goes for most places, with some spots in the north/Scotland getting close to freezing.

It was lovely and rainy today, we haven't had rain for a few weeks, so we need it. The grass is green again, although when I was walking to the station today I noticed a few front gardens where the grass has died, so hasn't recovered.

It's really been nippy today I'm in winter clothes . We lit the log burner tonight which the dogs hogged.

A bird expert said there's been extra clutches laid and reared this summer. Which hopefully will help towards the damage done by the bird flu.

Chilly night here ~ temperature is about 5C at the moment so heating has definitely been on!

I've noticed there are brown patches on some areas of grass as I've been out walking as well and yesterday, there were a lot of leaves that had fallen (guessing it's the ones that turned brown before we had all the rain and temperatures returned to more normal conditions for the time of year.)

And the unsettled theme continues and that's the sort of autumn I can cope with ~ some warm sunny days but also rain (to fill up the reservoirs after the summer) and not too many storms.
