1st September marks the start of meteorological Autumn and it looks like the new season/month is going to start with a continuation of the weather we’ve had the last few weeks ~ unsettled. But here are the Autumnal thoughts of….

TheWeatherOutlook
and yesterday’s thoughts from Netweather (their Autumn forecast doesn't seem to be available yet.)

And then there’s a very strong El Nino to add into the mix, which might bring a stormy/windy Autumn ~ Netweather's thoughts from a few weeks ago...

So let's see what the new season brings....

Developing Super El Nino may bring a wetter-than-average autumn

The latest ECWMF seasonal forecast indicates that it will turn increasingly wet through autumn - which is likely linked to super strong El Nino forecast to develop later this year - which tends to fuel an enhanced Atlantic storm track into Europe.

Just spoken to son he said watch flight radar and the planes in holding patterns at Manchester. He flies out of Leeds Bradford. One he was watching has just landed at Stansted.

A flight from Venice to Glasgow has just landed at Manchester!

Wind has woken me up here. Or maybe it’s the clock change. 😂

woke up to the window flying open as forgot to put it on the latch. Sat having a coffee wondering if the garden furniture is still in the same place

Rowgtfc72 · 25/10/2026 06:10

Just had the dog out for a wee on the east coast. Everything still standing- just.
45mph gusts here.

GloriaSmud · 25/10/2026 07:04

We had a very wet/windy evening and have woken up to a blowy day here. Everything in the garden looks it's still upright and covered up so that's good. Looks like the wind though is going to be the main problem today for most places.

It's very wet and very windy here in South Yorkshire. Our reservoirs have been at a record low so the rain is very welcome. They have only just started rising slightly in the last week - the first time in months.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/10/2026 08:53

Wet and windy yesterday and overnight here. I did hear someone attempting Diwali fireworks last night but they gave it up as a bad job. Cold, bright and sunny today, but still windy.

EmeraldRoulette · 25/10/2026 10:03

@BatshitCrazyWoman was it definitely fireworks?
I looked up the date last night and we’re two weeks away from Diwali so I can’t think why anyone would waste their fireworks attempting it last night. Or even why they would be out last night if they didn’t have to be!

i’ve got to go out shortly, hopefully I will be blown along to my destination. It’s sunny.

Definitely fireworks, but maybe for some random reason then! It was raining and really windy, so they were idiotic to even try!

Very autumnal here today ~ dull, cloudy and wet. Current weather warnings ~ more wind on the way but then things calm down the rest of the week...

https://www.gbnews.com/news/reservoirs-run-dry-secret-day-zero-plans

apologies for the gb news link but it was the only one that came up.

We’re going to need a lot more rain down here. Quite annoyed at the complete lack of planning that has lead to this. It’s not as though climate change has snuck up on us. Not sure about the SE but we’ve certainly had some very wet winters (including last winter) and extra storage capacity would have at least eased things.

Britons warned reservoirs could run dry within weeks as secret 'Day Zero' plans drawn up

The crisis stems from a summer of unprecedented heatwaves that triggered widespread drought conditions

Not such secret day zero plans now. Might explain why Microsoft have pulled out of an ai centre in Essex.

Think that might just be GB News being GB News.

This is where I saw it this morning. No idea why it didn’t come up on a Google search.

Some data. I googled United utilities you can find the reservoirs there

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/10/2026 23:13

I can see our local one on my water company’s page. It’s 14% full. My emergency water stocking has become slightly more urgent.

unbelievable how mad that is for the SW in the last week of October.

Jakers 14% 🙈. That's dire. Definitely I would stock some water away.

RampantIvy · 27/10/2026 09:08

Our reservoirs are about 50% full on average. However the one that supplies our village is only 21% full!

This time last year we had a hosepipe ban and the level was at 44%, but last year we also had more rain in September and October.

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/10/2026 10:42

Not a lot of rain in the forecast here for the next week. 😢

Which is a ridiculous complaint given how much I complained about it raining constantly from October to March last winter.

GloriaSmud · 28/10/2026 10:32

RafaistheKingofClay is right ~ there's not a lot of rain forecast for anyone.

This isn't going to help either ~ Netweather's thoughts on an early SSW as we head towards the end of the year.

And thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook for the next few days/week or so...

Pixiedust1234 · 29/10/2026 11:16

You would think that while the reservoir levels are so low they would clear out the silt and make them deeper, even if only around the edges, instead of talking about making more. It's not like we have the space to keep flooding everywhere. Zero forward planning 😤

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/10/2026 11:03

I’m not sure that’s enough to cope with the changing climate.

We have reached the stage in the drought where the water company have emailed to say they have identified the house as being in one of areas worst affected by the reservoir level and could we do helpful things like only use appliances on eco mode and shower in under 4 mins.

brownbootsandhats · 30/10/2026 11:13

To be fair - much of the rest of the world uses far less water than the average Brit - we are just used to having it easily available

GloriaSmud · 01/11/2026 12:01

So it's into the last month of Autumn and it looks like the first week of November is looking quiet and settled. Mist and fog might be a problem (so warnings will probably be issued) and there's a chance of nighttime frosts (especially in the north/Scotland) as we go through the week. As for rain, not a lot showing....
