Autumn 2026 (1st September ~ start of meteorological Autumn)

1st September marks the start of meteorological Autumn and it looks like the new season/month is going to start with a continuation of the weather we’ve had the last few weeks ~ unsettled. But here are the Autumnal thoughts of….

TheWeatherOutlook
and yesterday’s thoughts from Netweather (their Autumn forecast doesn't seem to be available yet.)

And then there’s a very strong El Nino to add into the mix, which might bring a stormy/windy Autumn ~ Netweather's thoughts from a few weeks ago...

So let's see what the new season brings....

Developing Super El Nino may bring a wetter-than-average autumn

The latest ECWMF seasonal forecast indicates that it will turn increasingly wet through autumn - which is likely linked to super strong El Nino forecast to develop later this year - which tends to fuel an enhanced Atlantic storm track into Europe.

Thoughts from Netweather on Storm Austen

<hands over sick bags to Delatron in case of rough seas>

Have stocked up on travel sickness pills!

GloriaSmud · 21/10/2026 17:00

@Delatron ~ looks like he's going to be well-equipped! I still think 'possibly breezy/slightly choppy' for his ferry crossing but he should hopefully be over the other side of the channel before the storm hits.

Well we've got updated weather warnings, including an Amber wind one and after Storm Austen, it isn't over yet as there's another one on the way mostly affecting Scotland but it's going to be a pretty stormy weekend.

Absolutely threw it down in London this morning and windy with it. I was sheltering in the lee of the supermarket telling myself you'd have loved this in August!

Delatron · 21/10/2026 18:07

Thanks @GloriaSmud the more it moves in to Friday the better!

Delatron · 22/10/2026 09:55

Well the ferry has been cancelled. Have to say I’m quite relieved. DS gets very travel sick but was determined to go.

GloriaSmud · 22/10/2026 10:34

That's probably a wise move Delatron, ~ the timings of all this is beginning to become a bit clearer now. We've also got some updated weather warnings...

The weekend is looking proper stormy/windy...

I'm glad for you and son @Delatron . As a child the family crossed to Ireland on the ferry. DF and I loved the rough seas, we went out on deck. Mother and siblings suffered terribly down below. I still have good sea legs.

It's sunny here with the biggest rainbow. On the horizon, black skies. I'm going to nip out now to the shops, then will batten down the hatches at home

Must move the bins though and check everything around the house.

RoseInAPot · 22/10/2026 11:27

Looking very sunny and benign right now here on the south west coast but not for long!

Our bins have just been emptied so they need tucking away tightly. Then we'll get the dogs out and once back tackle the garden to make everything safe.

Thoughts are with all those who have to go out there for whatever reason, especially our emergency services. We are predicted a tidal surge so hope no silly buggers think it's a good idea to go too close to the sea.

Delatron · 22/10/2026 12:26

Thanks @justasking111 it’s funny isn’t it - DS and I suffer terribly - I got sea sick on a sea like glass once!

DH and other DS seem fine.

Anyway, one less thing for me to worry about anyway.

Daughters friend got sick sitting on the boat in the marina on a beautiful sunny day. Francis Chichester suffered horribly I believe, as does my BIL. You'd be surprised how many sailors are laid low.

Oh joy the Welsh westerlies,🙈😁.

Seriously though I'm sorry that the south still needs a lot of rain. We live in a wet bubble in the West.

I’m in the SW and our reservoir levels are still falling. That is extremely unusual for this time of year. I believe they are looking at further restrictions beyond the existing hosepipe ban.

Mostly got the hatches battened down for tonight although we are out of the amber warning. The sudden drop in temps this week has finally caused the wildlife to decide it is time to move into the attic for this winter.

Local things saying they will be shut tomorrow. This would be unusual for a yellow warning. May end up eating my words on the preppers thread.

Wonder how all those drought ridden trees are going to fare in the first proper storm of this autumn/winter.

Very much 'calm before the storm' here in the Midlands. Have also been out weighting everything down in the garden and allotment.
Weather warnings all over the place for the next few days...

Thanks for your updates Gloria. Invaluable as always. It’s been so beautiful here today, blue skies all day. All change tomorrow!

Ah you’ve made me feel better. And at least I know no sailing holidays for me!

I believe you are in the next county to me and we have very similar bad weather, so I'm now worried about not weighting anything down 😬

Oh well, guess I might be doing extra exercise tomorrow and chasing things down 🏃

justasking111 · 22/10/2026 19:59

We've three storms tomorrow into Saturday. Then Sunday and another one Monday teatime through to Tuesday night. It's a doozie.

Builders we know are renowned an old cottage on a high headland on the Lleyn Peninsula. It's a new slate roof but no windows yet so they've battened up all the windows and doors to stop the roof taking off 🙈

I'm on the edge of Leicester ~ I think there might be a slight lull in the strong winds tomorrow morning for the Midlands before it all fires up again tomorrow afternoon, so might be a good time to check things over then. And then Saturday, we have Storm Boelo arriving. At the moment, the metoffice have these weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday. I'm wondering if they might change as we get closer to the weekend, it's looking rather awful for just about everyone on Saturday...

Wind starting to pick up a bit here now. Was very calm earlier. Was about to say it’s raining but not too heavily but it has just started chucking it down.

I have made a nest on the sofa.

GloriaSmud · 23/10/2026 07:32

The BBC has got a useful live blog going here for the latest on Storm Austen.

In the Midlands here, we haven't got much just yet in terms of signs of the storm but it looks like the wind and rain will come later.

Hope everyone in the SW/south stays safe ~ it's going to be a stormy day...

Thousands affected by power cuts as Storm Austen lashes Cornwall, Devon, Jersey and Guernsey

Cornwall and parts of west Devon are under a Met Office amber warning, while Jersey is under a red warning as Storm Austen lashes the region.

Fairly quiet here overnight but with steady rain (which is needed). Apparently peak winds of 50 to 55mph will arrive around 10 am, then tail off around 6pm.
High tide around 5pm so that's when the flood risk will be highest.

Delatron · 23/10/2026 10:58

Hope everyone stays safe in the storms.

I was happy to have DS tucked up in bed last night and not in a ferry. I now have DH stuck in Stockholm trying to get home. Flights are a bit chaotic.

Hoping it all passes through quickly.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/10/2026 11:16

Woke up at 7 to everything being calm as the eye passed over. Picking up again now very windy but not too wet.

Biblical rainfall at 1.30am though. That should tip the reservoirs up.
