Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Thanks for the update @krustykittens Glad to hear you're all now safe and relatively ok as it must have been a horrible ordeal.

Your pet sheep sound very canny though and like they'll be milking it for extra treats and fusses for the foreseeable, bless 'em!

Honestly, they are the most outrageous trio of divas! They came screaming down the field as soon as they saw us, skipping and bucking and nearly knocked us over as they mugged us for treats. "Mother! We have been DISTRESSED! We need soothing with tasty food. Tastier than what we are standing on."

Needspaceforlego · 27/01/2025 14:29

@krustykittens that's sweet, glad they are all OK.

@TheWeeDonkeyFella @BoudiccasBangles Thank you for thinking of us! We had quite a few trees down so that helps me feel less guilty about going up to check on them during the storm! Definetly not a good idea to go walking in woods during a red warning. About three came down in front of their gate so we had to crawl through them to get into the field on Saturday morning. Our youngest pony has a nasty cut on his forehead where we think he may have been hit by debris but luckily that is all, and I am grateful it missed his eyes. Lots of cuddles and carrots and no work this weekend, as while they might look calm, they are always a bit stressed after a bad storm. We have three pet sheep that stayed up with them (they pretty much free range on our land as they have no respect for horse fencing) and they were hysterical on Saturday morning, crowding around and baaing pitifully while demanding food with menaces. It was horrible where we were, lots of debris hitting the house and dogs were terrified. Our pet geese loved it though, waddling about with their wings outstretched. We had snow yesterday so I opened the door in the morning to the sheep on the driveway demanding room service!

Edited to say that it might look like I left them with no food during the storm, they are actually on 10 acres of good grazing and the food the sheep were demanding were pony treats, so, snacks! The same grazing would do them just fine during snow or torrential rain, but my sheep are spoilt and like to come down to the house in bad weather to be fed haylage, warm porridige in the cold and snooze all day in a shelter my husband built just for them. No one is going hungry up here in case anyone is tempted to call the RSPCA!

Edited

I love the update 💕 Thank you.

@krustykittens I adore Highlands - they’re so wise but somehow pesky too. How wonderful to have a herd of them. I always love photos of HMTLQ riding her Highlands at Balmoral.

I love sheep - I always had pet lambs as a child!

Glad all the livestock are ok x

They are a wonderful breed but seem to have a bad reputation, probably because they can be very headstrong. You need to really put the time in to build a relationship with them, I do lots of liberty work with mine as they love that face to face interaction. But get them onside and they would step out in front of a car for you. My gelding is fiercely protective and herds DD's boyfriend away from us and the herd when he visits them. They have only been dating for five years, he's not sure we can trust him yet!

Our local NT property has lost 10,000 trees. (As well as damage to visitors centre etc) Absolutely devastating. Other NT properties have also lost some really significant trees - some 200-250 years old. Just so, so sad.

Needspaceforlego · 30/01/2025 01:37

That's a crazy number of trees. I didn't think they'd be that many in one estate

Think I read it’s 900 acres. The number surprised me too. It’s right on the by the Lough so pretty exposed I guess. It’s one of our favourite places to go and walk, and somewhere I’ve been going my whole life. It’s really popular with locals. Just so sad

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/01/2025 12:09

One of the previous owners was a tree collector, so there are (or were) rare specimens from all around the world.

It's so so sad. It's a beautiful estate and such a resource and attraction for the peninsula. I heard the education centre was damaged too.
