Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Next day and where I am in county Durham and we seemed to survived lol though these constant storms are REALLY stressing me out...the constant worry of what will happen drives me nuts,I have to draw the curtains and ram the TV volume way up lol...what the hell has happened to the weather? There doesn't seem a month go by with out some warning or other...anyone else wanna move country? 😅

This is how I feel too x

Rhaenys · 25/01/2025 12:52

It wasn’t nearly as bad as storm Darragh here. Nothing blew over in my garden, and no trees down or flooding in my area.

Cher22 · 25/01/2025 12:57

Im same curtains closed tele up, earphones in when i in bed lol its sunny and cold here now in northern ireland and next one arrives apparently tomm but dont think its as bad but i stress at storms as they can be scary and its the dont know. Wish we had as much sunshine as storms as we'd all be smiling lol

dachshunddaft · 25/01/2025 13:26

@Norniron24advice ah we know the one I'm sure he'll be out clearing it all up today ... not. Absolute clown, I can't stand his mess all over the streets.

The amount of damage to roofs around here is unreal. It seems like every 2 or 3 flats and there's another one damaged. I wish I was a roofer now - I'd be coining it!

Plump82 · 25/01/2025 09:36

@GloriaSmud ah interesting!! I've never seen anything like it. The place is covered in black ice now. Which we get a lot but it's also raining so I'm assuming it's freezing rain?

I've only seen thundersnow once (about 30 years ago) and it was similar to what you saw last night. I think what you've got now (or had earlier), is just normal rain falling on to frozen ground. We don't have freezing rain often in this country as it's quite rare ~ the metoffice has a good explanation on what freezing rain is here.

Freezing rain

Freezing rain is a rare type of liquid precipitation that strikes a cold surface, and freezes almost instantly.

Probably not freezing rain by looks of it. It eventually turned to snow again which has been on and off all day, pretty heavy as times.

Evenstar · 25/01/2025 13:54

Heavy hail showers in the north west south of Preston, a nasty accident with a vehicle hitting the central reservation shut the M6 earlier. The photograph I saw showed icy slush full of tyre marks, be careful out there!

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 25/01/2025 14:37

Hope you and your ponies are ok @krustykittens I thought of your post yesterday, noticing a couple of horses in a field, wrapped up but seemingly unfazed by the fierce coastal winds that had me gripping the steering wheel (Lancs coast, so not as bad as you guys but still pretty wild).

dynamiccactus · 25/01/2025 15:38

BurntBroccoli · 25/01/2025 09:29

Oh no - so bad for the environment. That stuff will be getting into the water courses and sea eventually.
Bloody hate polystyrene.

I was thinking the same - it will probably be years and people will still be finding them.

I can't remember the name of the book or the author now, but I read a book a few years ago about someone who turned much more environmentally conscious because they had something similar happen in their garden and were collecting the little white balls for weeks and it made them rethink their entire lifestyles.

As for there being storm after storm, this is climate change for you. But with Trump in charge and China not giving a fig either, it can only get worse.

Treesinmygarden · 25/01/2025 16:01

I don't mind a storm so long as I don't have to go out in it - though obviously not the destructive side of it - but the red warning was a bit of a jolt!

There seems to have been an incredible amount of destruction with this one. We're fine, neighbours opposite lost 4 ridge tiles. Sadly 4 trees downed at the Dark Hedges, and a young man of 20 killed when a tree fell on his car. Awful.

We're lucky that our cables are underground but so many people are without power and likely to be for some time. Having a further storm so quickly after Friday's will only hamper clear-up efforts too. Hope it's not nearly as bad.

BoudiccasBangles · 25/01/2025 16:13

I’ve driven to Brecon today. So much water pouring off and standing on the fields. We have a two day weather warning for rain from tomorrow, so just keeping fingers crossed.

Good point, @krustykittens , how were the ponies?

Edited

It's everywhere! Up in the park now too. Surely he'll have to do something.

PickAChew · 25/01/2025 18:28

He needs to hire one of those scarab street vac things. The mess will be going down the drains and everywhere.

Back to weather as usual in Co Durham. Cold, bright enough to dazzle and just enough of a breeze to have mouthfuls of hair at inopportune moments. A few of the local shops have lost some slates and ridge tiles but their roofs were in a poor state of repair, anyhow.

Needspaceforlego · 25/01/2025 18:36

I keep thinking about those ponies too. Big hugs for the ponies

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 25/01/2025 18:36

I didn't think it was that bad but this afternoon one of the neighbours sent round a photo of a roof tile embedded in our back green. Glad we all stayed indoors yesterday!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/01/2025 19:18

Had a wander round town today to check the damage. Surprisingly mild in most places, with odd major events. Two large trees down on our road - one at each end - fortunately both falling in the least troublesome direction. The 2 sturdy metal posts holding up the rugby club sign had been bent into very precise 90° angles about a foot above ground level. One fence totally flat, and a garden wall the same. But in between it's individual fence panels, odd roof tiles, and small branches.

Solaire18381 · 25/01/2025 22:09

I hope everyone is okay and got through yesterday. Yellow area here, no damage thankfully but the house was creeking. Some in the area are still without power since yesterday that won't be restored for 48 hours.

Another Yellow warning for wind tomorrow. Hope it's nothing like yesterday's for all.

Sensitiveelephant · 26/01/2025 06:56

We have just got electricity back. All of our fences and gate came down. Tree house blew over. Trampoline broken. Lots of slates off roof and no electricity/heat/hot water for 48 hours. But actually quite enjoyed candlelit dinners with the kids and cosying up by the fire. We are very lucky to have a fireplace in living room. Felt lucky compared to alot of people and made us appreciate what we have. Hope everyone else is OK.

She’s definitely arrived here in Wales. It’s worse than Éowyn, although we missed the worst of that. We’re going out to a pantomime this afternoon, so hoping the roads aren’t too bad.

Horrible first thing here in Cornwall but now we’re just back to the usual January storminess, although strong winds forecast for the next few days . Lots of branches down and roof slates blown off.

AllPlayedOut · 26/01/2025 13:45

Sincere sympathies to everyone with damage and especially those who are without power. I hope that it’s restored asap.

I just saw that the 19 year old who was injured in Mauchline, when a tree fell on his car, has died. How terrible to go like that and at such a young age.

@TheWeeDonkeyFella @BoudiccasBangles Thank you for thinking of us! We had quite a few trees down so that helps me feel less guilty about going up to check on them during the storm! Definetly not a good idea to go walking in woods during a red warning. About three came down in front of their gate so we had to crawl through them to get into the field on Saturday morning. Our youngest pony has a nasty cut on his forehead where we think he may have been hit by debris but luckily that is all, and I am grateful it missed his eyes. Lots of cuddles and carrots and no work this weekend, as while they might look calm, they are always a bit stressed after a bad storm. We have three pet sheep that stayed up with them (they pretty much free range on our land as they have no respect for horse fencing) and they were hysterical on Saturday morning, crowding around and baaing pitifully while demanding food with menaces. It was horrible where we were, lots of debris hitting the house and dogs were terrified. Our pet geese loved it though, waddling about with their wings outstretched. We had snow yesterday so I opened the door in the morning to the sheep on the driveway demanding room service!

Edited to say that it might look like I left them with no food during the storm, they are actually on 10 acres of good grazing and the food the sheep were demanding were pony treats, so, snacks! The same grazing would do them just fine during snow or torrential rain, but my sheep are spoilt and like to come down to the house in bad weather to be fed haylage, warm porridige in the cold and snooze all day in a shelter my husband built just for them. No one is going hungry up here in case anyone is tempted to call the RSPCA!

Aw @krustykittens 💐
You all have been through a lot.
Thanks for the update. Take care.
