Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

We've had the strongest recorded winds in the UK in my area (North East) and there is substantial damages/trees down everywhere. All roads in and out locally are blocked.

Yet we aren't in the red zone?

Yes, there's been very little difference in weird speed between the areas of Scotland in the red zone and us in the NE of England in the Amber. In fact, looking at the wind speeds reported by Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle airports there were literally only a couple of knots in it.

I definitely feel we should have had a Red Warning here today. The band of wind has relentlessly battered both the central belt of Scotland and those of us in the upper regions of NE England (and still is)

My roof ridge tiles are now in my garden (Glasgow)

100mph in south Lanarkshire is the official current strongest gust

The BBC has just said Northumberland.

Plastictrees · 24/01/2025 14:51

Things are calming down here now thankfully (west coast Scotland). Our scaffolding etc stayed in tact, apparantly many local trees are down though which is a shame - lots of cherry trees.

Brizlee forest, again, same as during storm Arwen

This is looking as bad as Arwen, too. Hopefully people won't be waiting over a week, this time.

100mph in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire, 96 in Brizlee, Northumberland. TBH, when it's that strong I don't think a few mph makes a big difference. It's all terrifying.

Am not enjoying the creaking noises coming from above the huge window in my lounge.

Yes we should definitely be classed as the red zone.

I know it's not an exact science but a lot of our schools had to close last minute and people have been caught out a bit because we weren’t classed as red.

We had the strongest winds with Arwen too if I remember correctly.

Definitely reminds me of Arwen, Pickachew.

I'm sitting outside my DDs school now and it's terrifying. The car is being bombarded with debris and rocking all over. I've tried to park as far away from trees as possible, but with the best will in the world, there are tree lined avenues all round the school.

So bloody unnecessary. Our school is always too pig headed to close. They sent a communication yesterday saying they 'felt the West would get it worse' I really wanted to tell them to fuck off.

They aren't bloody weather forecasters!!

Arwen was just horrific. A million trees were lost at Kielder apparently. A million is mind-boggling.

JoyousGreyOrca · 24/01/2025 15:13

We have lost some of the felt in our shed roof. But could be worse.

CharityShopChic · 24/01/2025 15:15

Definitely calming and brightening here in Glasgow. We have lost a ridge tile off the roof but apart from that appear unscathed.

It's scary enough in the house so it must be absolutely petrifying outside.

I totally agree, so unnecessary. I hope you get home safe!

GrouchyKiwi · 24/01/2025 14:47

The roar of the wind is quite something.

The BBC reports said that as well - I think the location was Glasgow for that particular story.

It's quite calm where I am with no more than a stiff breeze at times, but there are loads of twigs and branches strewn about so it was obviously worse overnight.

Iwiicit · 24/01/2025 15:19

The good news is I've just received my government warning siren call in Lanarkshire!

I had no idea it was that bad. You just can't imagine that many.

In 2023 Jersey lost 20,000 which seemed a lot for a tiny island, but Kielder really puts it into perspective.

Oh well that’s a relief! At least it gave you plenty of time to prepare.

Is there another named storm coming on Sunday?

supercali77 · 24/01/2025 15:38

I'm in Glasgow, have seen some roof bits flying off, had to go and check it wasn't from my roof! I've an old flat roofed extension on my kitchen and I'm so worried it's gonna get ripped off. so far I haven't seen any of the trees going down round me

TimPat · 24/01/2025 15:41

Trampoline on the road in neighbouring street, quite a few trees down, neighbour to my right has lost their shed roof and neighbour to the back their conservatory roof is off.
We replaced our ancient roof last summer and I'm feeling extremely relieved that we did because I don't think it would have withstood this. Glasgow.

biscuitsandbooks · 24/01/2025 15:47

It's been pretty bad on the Cumbrian coast - trees down, slates flying off roofs, no public transport running and all schools closed. Our power was off for a couple of hours and some people's has been off since lunchtime.

BoudiccasBangles · 24/01/2025 15:51

I’ve just been almost blown off my feet crossing the road in our High Street. Mid-Wales. We only have a yellow warning!

Iamcaptainlee · 24/01/2025 15:51

It’s much calmer here in Ayrshire now where I am

TRNSMTtaxi · 24/01/2025 16:05

Also Ayrshire and it seems to be settling down, some sun breaking through.
We seem to be reasonably unscathed but lots of slates off and flat roof damage amongst friends / colleagues.

dementedpixie · 24/01/2025 16:05

My fence is destroyed 😭
I was filming it billowing and then it just collapsed
