Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

I still have my bins though 😆

GrouchyKiwi · 24/01/2025 16:09

Hopefully it's not a big hassle to fix, dementedpixie.

Our neighbour's new fence is billowing too. Am worried it's going to come down. Won't impact us as there's a wall too, but they've not had it for much more than a month so I hope it stays up for them.

Funnywonder · 24/01/2025 16:15

Still very windy here near Belfast but definitely the worst of it has blown itself out. We were lucky - just a few forgotten items travelling at speed across the garden. But in the local area loads of trees down, mangled trampolines, fence panels down, an as yet missing playhouse. One elderly intrepid woman was rounded up by a kindly neighbour as she attempted to make her way to the shop for milk, bless her. The shop was closed. Not that there would have been any milk thanks to marauding hoarders yesterday evening. Lovely neighbour gave her milk and dropped her home😊

So far no news of any injuries thank goodness.

Definitely reminds me of Arwen, Pickachew.

The Great Storm of 1987
I was a student in Canterbury

The country lost 15 million Trees, 18 people killed and the Seven oaks of Sevenoaks was reduced to 2.
Most big storms tend to be worse in the North but this one was all over.
I slept through it all though and went into Uni to find the roof of our building was gone with security guards wondering what the hell I was doing turning up at all. I had wondered about the destruction on the way.
My cat Chaucer disappeared that night ….

In the South here now and nothing.

prayformyfence · 24/01/2025 16:31

Still getting battered on coast in north Ayrshire but posts saying it's dying down with others (further south?) give me hope it's about to here too. Had no power or phone signal for about 3 hours but back now. Some significant damage in the local area. Our fences are not in a good way but could have been a lot worse.

LadyChilli · 24/01/2025 16:33

I've had a bit of flat roof ripped off (Glasgow) and looking out of my window, two of the four houses over the road from me have roof damage too. It's going to be difficult to get hold of tradespeople in the coming days.

My Mum and Dad were in Cambridge amd left me looking after the house aged 16. They rang me in a total panic and I'd slept through the whole thing too!

PickAChew · 24/01/2025 17:37

I was in Hull in 1987 and never heard a thing!

It started to ease off in Durham around 3 and I even managed to get into the garden to look at the damaged guttering without anything flying and hitting me. The washer is on so the house is back to more familiar sounds (it was a quick and barely adequate wash for pissy laundry only, this morning) and my guts are less, er, anxious than they were. They needed their own wind warning😅

The local roof bodgers are going to have a busy week. Ours isn't the only guttering to have flown off (though DH will fix that himself) and lot of people have slipped slates.

Seeingadistance · 24/01/2025 17:51

I’m in East Ayrshire with no power since late morning and it is still wild out there. Can hear strong gusts still. Rural area - lots of damage to farm buildings, worse than many have known before.

Bixaweet · 24/01/2025 18:11

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/01/2025 12:56

There's the odd loon passing through George Square! 🤷‍♀️

When is there not? 😁

Think the worst is over wind-wise, but it's absolutely chucking it now! Can report the damage near me has amounted to the toppling of two public bins (RIP). Saw one guy pick up after his dog and valiantly attempt to stuff the bag into the slot of the now-horizontal bin.

AInightingale · 24/01/2025 18:11

Our local shops have just reopened and there ain't one loaf of bread for sale in the Eurospar. Not one!
Most delivery vehicles were off the road today so that's clearly going to have an impact, but curse those selfish demented panic-buyers yesterday, what the hell is wrong with people???

That sounds awful. I've just heard on the news that a man died after a tree fell on his car in Ireland. For all some people whinge that the weather warnings are OTT, I'd like to think that it does save some lives. There's no doubt that these storms are becoming more frequent.

MessyNDepressy · 24/01/2025 18:15

I live in Glasgow but was working today in Renfrewshire. Fair amount of fencing and trees down and a lot of debris around. En route home now and our local McDonalds was open so have stopped there for a quick bite to eat as not much in the house. Guy said they only opened 15 minutes ago. It’s not great but it’s not as bad as it was this afternoon.

There was plenty of bread in our supermarket this morning but I can imagine it could be pretty depleted by now. Not because of panic buying but because of lack of deliveries.

Iamcaptainlee · 24/01/2025 18:20

So many people (mainly men, soz!) didn’t take this seriously and it was as bad as they said it would be.

I remember waking to find several trees down in our garden and the windows covered in salt (we lived near the sea). Huge areas of forest had been blown down. But there was also a lot of planting over the next few years and those trees are now large 35 years old trees. For some of the commercial planting that means it is well on its way to being harvested.

My fence is destroyed 😭
I was filming it billowing and then it just collapsed

sounds like me on a Friday night!

I'm near the coast and my car and conservatory are absolutely covered in salt. I took my car for a main service last week so assumed the screenwash had been topped up. Nope. Had to pull over and pour a bottle of water over the windscreen. I'm hoping the jets aren't blocked again as I only had them replaced last year. Wasn't going to fanny about opening the bonnet today to check today, but will do tomorrow.

Runingoncaffeine · 24/01/2025 18:51

By the way, how were the ponies & the cob? I hope they were okay in their field 🩷 to whoever posted.

mrsmacmc · 24/01/2025 19:00

Fence swaying in the wind
At least 20 tiles off the roof
Leak in garage
Having to stay put as no way out the village due to fallen trees & debris

In Glasgow. Worrying about my wee mum whose back home in Ireland on her own. She right on the east coast, literally at the shore surrounded by a forest. Shes got her torches, hot water bottles, flasks, water supply, devices charged etc. Shes a tough one. In the big storm in the 80s 2 trees came down on the road at the same time whilst she was out on her bike. One immediately behind and 1 in front. She sawv it hapoening but there was nothing she could do. Split seconds and she have been crushed. She climbed over the felled tree in front and walked home.i remember her arrival v dishevelled but v calm. She reminded me of this tonight, saying shed be grand . The last we spoke she was heading to bed to listen to Bruce Springsteen.

my mum is grand. she stayed indoors. mostly :-) the winds howled around her so she got up, made a pot of stew and put it in flasks. she sat up with her 2 dogs until the power went out. She's not had any all day but was glad to have a reason to burn her way through the "good" candles she was gifted at xmas. A fair number of slates flew off, her greenhouse is probably somewhere the Irish sea and she was pleased that 2 trees came down in the woods behind her - apparently its saved her a job as they were blocking light in the garden. roads all round her village are blocked. she's lit a log fire, is eating her stew and is happy enough to wait it out until things are sorted. a big relief all round.

Only2WeeksToGo · 24/01/2025 19:08

@Norniron24advice your mum sounds great.

Norniron24advice · 24/01/2025 19:14

shes a marvel. well into her 70s and shes out on her bike most days running errands for the "old folk" in her village - half of which are younger than her. shes lived through alot and little knocks her off her stride, she is my heroine.

Cece92 · 24/01/2025 19:25

Power has just come back on and mobile mass was down! Been 8 hours! Phone was starting to die and daughter had used the power bank to charger her phone earlier. X

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 24/01/2025 19:31

No power for eight hours.

How to boil water with tealights. At least we could drink tea and boil taties. 🤣
